The Amstrad uses proprietary 3inch floppy discs, usually made by the brand Amsoft. They came with an A and B side.

Glad to see that these laptops will (hopefully!) find a new home - much better than being thrown away. It's amazing hat people nowadays will throw away, and even if Windows won't work on a laptop like this (due to the OS'es being unsupported), you could probably find a lightweight version of Linux that will run OK and make these devices fine for general usage. Of course, I'd focus mostly on the laptop with Windows 7, adding more RAM and an SSD - as that looks the most hopeful of the lot. Also - love the look of some of those really old retro machines - how times have changed! Hopefully they can be restored, as old machines like that are quite collectable!

I'm thinking of starting a project that would make a universal motherboard to bring life to dead or outdated laptops. I'm not sure however if that would be recycling or if it would just be generating more e-waste. Any thoughts on this? The motherboard would talk to laptop displays, keyboards and trackpads directly and have a pi compute module or some similar SBC. Things needed to convert a laptop would be 3d printed mounting brackets for I/O ports, which I've decided is best since you only print the ones you need locally for cheap, a few standard 18650 cells, the main PCB itself and a compute module. One thing that makes me not want to do this at all though is the horrible screens on many older laptops, but then again I go on ebay and see a lot of laptops that have an OK screen but slow-ish CPU with very little battery life.

Always interested in re-purposing devices especially PC's and laptops. All my laptops in my home are re-purposed, either from eBay or old work business machines where it becomes cost inefficient for them to take back. So, like you I do a clean up and add extra RAM and replace the drives and they perform even better than some of the new laptops sold by retailers costing 2x or 3x more. With Windows XP most of the time when it's password locked you can hit F8 at startup and go into safe mode go into the administrator and delete the password most people don't think to put a password on the administrator account in safe mode. So therefore you kind of don't have to install Windows in a way, as when you get into the operating system after removing the password you can open up command prompts and simply put in command codes that could completely reinstall Windows as a clean installment. Those functions were only access through command prompts but now they're more accessible in newer operating systems.

The screens are basically unobtainium (gas plasma, it's not an LCD) and the hard drives are whitelisted in the BIOS and it won't POST with anything other than a Connor hard drive. I believe there is a custom BIOS that'll let you use other disks but mine still works perfectly so I've not needed to do so.
