Took a lot of guts for the AFL guys to take these fights against rugby players who are clearly much tougher as a general rule. I remember Richard Champion got a win for the AFL in a competitive fight but as far as I remember the rest were basically blowouts for the NRL lol

Because none of the guys that actually knew how to fight from the afl were involved lol. Greg Stafford would’ve pounded them to death. When Richmond had a pro fighter that was champion in his class visit they sparred and Stafford beat the shit out of him.

How bad was aussie heavyweight boxing in the earrly to min 1990's as Jacko was rated in the top 5. I met Jacko a few times where my ex- missus used to work and he's a waniker. But I gotta give Jacko credit , he went the full hog trying to promote the boxing night as it was for a youth charity fundraiser & he took his hiding Big Mal gave him like a man. Loved Jacko's comment "Now there's 2 people in australia that can beat me Mal Meninga & my wife. I've always prefered AFL to NRL until about 7 years ago I started getting right into NR%L and started following Parramatta Eels & watch twice as much NRL that AFL

I'm sure a big factor in this was the fact that AFL 'hard men" kind of just intimidate smaller players. Whereas rugby league hard men (at this time anyway) had to be able to fight other hard men. I seriously doubt Monkhurst would have ever actually gone toe to toe with someone that big and aggressive before. He gave it a good go, but there is just no substitute for being in 100 fights.
