Nice combinations of Boxing, "dirty" boxing, and combatives. On a side note, I like Geoff Thompsons categorization of fights: Match fighting: opponents know each other and have studied their strategies and capabilities (one hopes). Rules are agreed. fight is on neutral ground. Ambush fighting: the opponent has identified and assessed victim. No rules. Opponent choses the ground. Weapons and multiple assailants likely. 3 second fighting: rapid spontaneous escalation of confrontation into violence. Opponents not likely to have studied strategies and capabilities of each other. Weapons and multiple assailants possible. Fights can and will transition between these categories as it progresses. Generalizing: Biomechanics and and strategies of combatives suit ambush and 3 second fighting better than match fighting. Boxing and "dirty"boxing or MMA take the ascendency as things tend to match fighting.

sorry more comments. Like that lead vertical hook! Few years ago I was throwing an "amateur" boxing style hook with the knuckles horizontal, opponent threw up an elbow and broken my thumb. So learned to throw it with a vertical fist and then twist to the horizontal on contact. Rocky Marciano used to miss with a lot of hooks but " If Rocky missed you with the fist he'd get you with the elbow" by twisting the fist and pushing your weight forward from the vertical hook you can drive the forearm or elbow into the jaw very nicely. Also my neighbour who's a correctional services officer was watching me train and noted that one of the main techniques they are taught is that downward strike to the collar bone. It stops a fight while being non lethal, uses gross motor skills, and uses same mechanics bare handed or with a PR-24 baton. 👍

Yep the collarbone shot is a man stopper. It gets harder in winter or where bigger jackets are in play but definitely worth experimenting with. Vertical and Horiztonal hooks have pros and cons, but both open up brilliant ways to blend in the combatives 👍🥊

Came across a Paladin Press book 30 years back and it featured some fighting styles from different parts of the world if I recall. Unusual chapter on a guy in South Asia who ate onions and garlic and the like to exhale a wave of bad breath at opponent. Unusual but there was a good chaoter about a sailor who used a wheelhouse kind of attack. Lead left tiger claw sweep or fist to clear guard or strike head which was followed by the wheeling right. Repeated from the other side moving forward. Simple and effective that maybe is similar to some of the WW1/2 books out there?

Great video! You spoke about knuckle considerations. Which knuckles should you use if hitting with the horizontal fist. Also, for the rear straight, do you prefer the vertical, horizontal or inverted fist?
@davelovespot51163 жыл бұрын
Always pointer and middle knuckles because there the most durable
@johnnemo65093 жыл бұрын
Check out Jack Dempsey's "championship fighting" he goes into great detail about which knuckles to use. I believe he has some limited practical experience to support his views.
@TommyMooreww2combatives3 жыл бұрын
Typically people use the two big knuckles for horiztinal hooks, and the middle for vertical. Many writers on bare knuckle focused on just the hand position, not the knuckle (vertical, horizontal etc). I like vertical for my lead hand hit (like Cuban boxers today do) and a Slavic / corkscrew for my rear hand shot. But I blend them all to be honest to what feels right at the time 🤙

@@TommyMooreww2combatives Couldn't agree more. systema does some interesting bare knuckle stuff about allowing the fist to conform to the target. worth a look indeed.

@@johnnemo6509 I just read his book. Thank you for the recommendation. He clearly mentioned aiming with the ring finger and his advice is much different than the karate practitioner's focus on the pointer and middle knuckles.

Punching to the head or jaw area is extremely bad advice. If he turns head you may hit wrong place and suffer injury to your hand. Better to stick with palm strikes to head area don't you think.
@vyderka3 жыл бұрын
To my amazement some change in human biology must have happened in recent years. In my youth we punched the head a lot and no one hand was broken, many a face were smashed. Now every comment section on yt has something about these fragile hands being broken. Yes, they might break, but it doesn't happen THAT easily.

@@glennrobinson7193 I apologize if I sound somewhat aggressive in my comment. It wasn't my intention, English is not my first language. I've seen and given (received some too, but not too many :) quite a number of fist smashing faces. It's easier and more intuitive than many people think, but on the other hand in the first world most people don't work hard with their hands. Usual man's hands looked like a cross between a hammer and pommel, now they are subtle and gentle like of the pianist.

@@vyderka No problem. I did iron palm training years ago and I have fist knuckles that feel like steel, but I wouldn't use my fists to head area unless the other guy was dazed by a previous strike of mine and if I was absolutely sure I had a clear strike, say to side of jaw or nose. Reserve punches to solar plexus or abdomen area would be my advice.
@johnnemo65093 жыл бұрын
@@vyderka It's a law of the universe that it never happens until the worst possible time. The fact that boxers tape their hands and wear gloves and still break hands proves it can happen. But you also raise a good point lower down the thread.. in the west manual labour is becoming a thing of the past, my generation has much softer hands than my fathers generation and some people are born with heavier bone structure than others. When I got my first punch bag my father threw a few stones in with the sand to simulate hitting elbows and hips. Every so often you'd find one and it would teach you not to let the shock freeze you. I am of course not recommending that anyone does this these days. I'm strongly in the palm heal and hammer fist camp, the police do check knuckles. Thanks also for the nice comment etiquette. pleasure to discuss in a civilized environment.
