Ambrose discusses racism in sports, prison riots, and his experiences of discrimination as a black man in the 70s & 80s in London.
As a pioneering sports agent and manager, Ambrose Mendy has represented some of the biggest names in boxing & football. From Paul Ince, & James DeGale, to Chris Eubank Jr, and of course, The Dark Destroyer, Nigel Benn.
Ambrose also recalls the shooting of boxing promoter Frank Warren and his involvement in a court case as their relationship deteriorated from best man to promoting rivals!

@@DodgeWoodall only recently stumbled across your podcast Dodge and I've thouroughly enjoyed every episode! I like that you ask very simple yet effective questions that aid the guest in sharing their story. after seeing you respond to the comment above I wanted to ask if you've been a guest on any podcasts and if so where may I find them as I recall on the episode with shaun Atwood he mentioned at the beginning of the episode that you yourself have a interesting story of how you got started with festivals. thanks!

I enjoyed this interview, as a British born Asian lad of Bangladeshi descent, I can relate to Ambrose, he suffered racism in late 50s and 60s, my community faced the same since 68 after Enoch made his speech, I went through similar in 90s. Asian people went through racism for a long time, because they had a pacifist attitude and always turned the other cheek unlike the West Indians, but when old bill did very little to protect Asians from racist attacks and petrol bombing of their homes, that’s when it was the final straw and Asians began forming gangs in the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. This became a catalyst for a lot of Asians getting into protection rackets and drugs in the 80s because once we gained power that’s when we decided to take advantage and look for criminal opportunities. I’m gravitating towards Dodge Woodall channel lately, James English channel has gone downhill and I’m not the only one saying it. Keep it up Dodge.

back in the day Ambrose glued to Nigels KEISTER like superglue. when Nigel started getting dollar, like he would box every few months, when first turn pro, after the likkle BMW, remember Nigel then fresh out the army and serving N. Ireland still see, it like yesterday, that very first Porshe 911 convertible, white, black targa top,Nigel (naturally) was buzzing,Army pay v what boxing paid! (and that was early days) way before Eubank, I remember a boxer called Lou Gent, very decent domestic level trained by Dave (Nails) Payne,Lou boxed Nigel, the £10,000 bet Lou put on himself, was more than his purse, gave Nigel a decent box, but outclassed.Lou done alright for herself, got out the game with a few bob, got into buying houses, developing property, last I heard off Lou's daughter was he doing good and happy lives in Norfolk. Dave Payne (trainer) Dave is proper proper old school, ex bare knuckle, ex pro, try find the book promo video for.. A Life Of Pain, promo video is filmed Lanzarote, filmed at Las Coronas, gaurentee you won't be disappointed. Davies boxing gym, Playa Bastian Lanzarote, Davies daughter Tracey owns hairdressers at Coronas Playa Hotel (5 star) in playa bastian, Dave also owned Bar Bastian! we were neighbours on Coronas Playa. loads of UK boxers used to come over for training camp. Quality boxing gym, near gaurenteed sunshine 80 degrees + minimum all year, you could go from the sea at Bastian, past Davies boxing gym, via Bar Bastian & Coronas Playa, stop for a quick haircut at Tracey's (Daves daughter) and be at the bottom of the mountains for altitude training (thin air) all in less than 15 mins! Nigel came there (and Tenerife) Mount Teide, at that time, when Nigel was unbeaten (before Eubank) spanking out the likes of prospect Nicky Piper, Ambrose was like a British Don King (ask anyone) but, had Ambrose as manager, and Tony Tucker & Charlton Leech as minders! Never mind, all and any of that. Those who known Nigel, since the beginning, go ask him now, and I already know the answers. Ask Nigel to tell you in his opinion, his 5 reverse order career defining bouts. 5 4 3 2 1. (1 will be a surprise) 5.Doug De Witt ( because it meant all & everything at the time) 4.G Man Gerald McClennan yes baddest man on planet, the middle weight Mike Tyson. yes brutal, yes Don King entered the ring bigging up Gerald and left the ring trying to sign Nigel! 3.Michael Watson for super slick silky smooth classy pure ability 2.Chris Eubank Senior x two classics,no explanation needed. 1.ask Nigel himself, a fella from ametuers, awesome awesome prospect, ask Nigel, who ever landed the hardest punch on him. Answer, Rod Douglas's, if you don't know, you don't know, Rod would have been World Champ.

Ambrose seems too street wise to get mixed up in the Frank Warren shooting incident, but my instincts and his demeanor when asked suggests to me he knows a little more than he is letting on.

Used to see Ambrose on Draycot Road Wanstead. Right nice geezer. George Davis is innocent was painted on many walls around London. Last saw George a couple of years ago. A real gentleman and great company. Loved the Phoenix Appollo run by Gil & Pany. Proper people and Proper food.

Well all I can say if I ever need an agent then Ambrose would be the man he talks my language. Not that I’ve got any talent I’ve been know to empty the pub with my singing as my mum you to say you couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. 😂😂 Seriously wouldn’t you just want someone like Ambrose on your side. Great podcast love the way you ask the question and let him talk without constant talking over him . Well done you deserve to grow . 👋👋

Laurie Cunningham was a brilliant player. One of the ' 3 Degrees ' at West Brom under Ron Atkinson then played for Real Madrid, Manchester United, briefly, amongst others. Unfortunately injuries wrecked his career and waslater killed in a car accident in the late 1980's.
