Ahead of Jake Paul versus Tyron Woodley this weekend on BT Sport Box Office, boxing icon John Fury goes up against UFC stalwart Dan Hardy in the ultimate debate: boxing vs MMA.
Which sport is more dangerous? Which is more skilful? What does the involvement of KZbinrs say about the state of boxing? Why do UFC fighters earn so much less than boxers?
The pair grapple with these highly contentious issues and more in this epic discussion.
John Fury was also asked how his son Tyson Fury would fare in the UFC, should he one day choose to move into MMA.

Like many, I started of as a big boxing fan and I think that's because of how much media coverage boxing gets. But then I discovered MMA and questioned why I was only interested in boxing which has such a limited area to work with (head to above belt and only using hands) when a real fight in the street would use the entire body. Don't get me wrong, WITHIN that limited area, boxing is SUPER TECHNICAL but for me MMA is more dynamic with all the arts working in fluid synchrony (Muay Thai to boxing to wrestling to BJJ) and the only reason it isn't as popular as boxing is because its so new. With more stars and more media coverage it will continue growing and will become massive.

@@Sam-ng3of not necessarily true. There was a data from 2017 that showed the average age of a UFC viewer was increasing over a 10 year period. Which means less younger fans tuning in. And the UFCs PPV numbers nosed dived for a few years recently. MMA is not just growing and growing, its stalling out a bit. I like both but MMA is more technical and has a higher barrier to understand than boxing, so it might put off a lot of casual sports fans. All I'm saying is I don't think it's just a time thing. And what with all the data around concussions etc.... Less parents will get their kids in to boxing and MMA. They could go the way of the dodo in the next 200 years.

I appreciate the interview and they are both great pundits and very respectful, but the whole Boxing vs MMA debate is dumb. How many sports fans do you know who only like 1 sport lol? Most MMA fans I know like to watch some boxing too, and most boxing fans I know like to watch some MMA too. I think the vast majority of fight fans like both and don't feel the need to slavishly stick to one. I think most fight fans just want to see good fights. Doesn't matter if it's Ngannou vs Jon Jones or Fury vs Joshua.

@@iorekby to be fair I only watch mma and I watch every event that is made and enjoy watching the prelims. I think for me I enjoy mma so much that I know so many fighters and rankings and I think I'm so invested in mma news that it's hard for me to watch boxing because it's like a whole new sport to start learning about, because it's not just about the sports itself but you've got to learn the history, the news and the fighters even people who aren't fighters and are just involved with the sport. I do watch the big boxing matches but probably am more casual then the average casual fan, so I definitely feel like there are people that only watch one. Alot of fans also have this narrative of a war between boxing and mma so they only stick to one but I think that is really fucking dumb.

I think the reason boxing dropped off in popularity over the last few decades is that it was horribly mismanaged. Too many competing companies with too many belts, and too many fighters afraid to lose their perfect records meant that the sport lost steam after the Mike Tyson era. Enter Dana White and the UFC and boxing was essentially dead. I hope it comes back. I love Fury.

Grew up in a boxing family but naturally picked up an MMA obsession early. I think it's a generational thing. That and it was a lot easier to access event schedules and every single fight was uploaded online going back a long time. If you really get into boxing you'll realize how technical it is. Much more than just using your hands to attack. Same for mma. Most people that just watch mma for fun think its just a brawl. But its so cool seeing all the martial arts clash into each other in the octagon. For me its boxing. Boxing is beautiful to practice and watch. But I'd rather watch a stacked ufc event than 1 big boxing match. Unless its for an undisputed boxing champ.

I’ve been a fan of boxing since around 1990, MMA since around 2005 - both sports a fantastic. From both an entertainment and a competitive standpoint, MMA is consistently putting on better shows than boxing. There are less politics in MMA and comber all I feel, in current form, MMA has much more growth potential than boxing. Both sport, politically, have challenges - but you have to give it to athletes of both, they’re the toughest guys putting in the most work. Boxing needs to get rid of the alphabet straps and it can come on leaps and bounds, but it won’t.

I've been a life long martial artist but never got into boxing. Perversely I find boxing more brutal, two people facing each other just punching each others heads. 1 aspect that’s much better for MMA is that the organisations have more control over the fighters compared to boxing (negative being they control the pay) which means they’re typically paired to fight people at their ranking at every level which means you’ll usually see competitive fights even if the fighters are up and coming and at the top level pretty much all the top 10 guys are fighting each other at some point or another… this is what I feel boxing is lacking with a lot of fighters having padded records early on and “needing” that undefeated record going into their first major fight to be a draw. It also leads to a lot less interesting overall fight cards compared to MMA where I personally find a lot of the unknown fighters to be exciting fights to watch too which just leads to more people starting to follow these unknown guys career as they’ve seen them in an exciting fight in the past.

One of the biggest differences between boxing and mma, is a boxer is only in danger of being hurt for the time he is on his feet. The minute a boxer takes a few big shots he can take a knee and buy himself some time and stop the onslaught. That option isn't there in mma, the fight can take place anywhere. Nowhere to hide

That’s such an ignorant comment 🤣🤣. A boxer can take a knee sure but that only lasts 10 seconds, and also the referee has every right to stop the fight if a boxer decides to take a knee ‘because he is receiving too much punishment’. In MMA if you’re a decent grappler you can take your opponent down if you feel like you’re getting beaten up on your feet, then you can have a rest while demolishing your opponent on the ground. MMA has way more chances for breaks than boxing

If that was the reality you might be right. I have seen plenty of fights, rarely have I seen boxers taking a knee to rest. That’s what clinching is for. As soon as the fighter stands up again (after 8 seconds) he’ll get battered (most of the time). Whereby in MMA you can straight shoot for the legs and keep your opponent on the ground avoid the danger of getting knocked out.

This is absolutely brilliant!! I'm a huge boxing fan however I'm not too shy to say MMA is better than Boxing in pretty much the majority of things. It's funny how the most established personalities like John and Teddy Atlas are so honest about this, where as some of the hardcore fans are so jealous of MMA and it's silly really when there's room for both. I do feel MMA over time will eventually overtake boxing, the younger generation aren't going to hook onto boxing when MMA is out there though I do feel Boxing will be around, it's just not going to be the most popular and that's ok. Really surprised with John's honesty and I really enjoyed this, massive respect for John.

One talking point they forgot is that elite boxers aren't really fighting each other now because of the politics of boxing destroying their own sport. That’s the thing, MMA fighters are jack of all trades, they’re decent at most combat skills but most of them are not specialists in a combat sport. Boxing, wrestling, BJJ and Muay Thai are specialist combat sports and they would Woop any MMA fighter in their sport, however, an MMA fighter has decent skills in all of those combat sports so in an octagon the MMA fighter will come on top. It’s a case of what you prefer, a jack of all trades or a specialist? That’s up to you.

@@zigzagnemesist5074 The foundations of MMA is built on specialists pal, that’s why the new breed of fighters get so much respect from other combat sports athletes because they understand that being a specialist in one area is very rarely enough to win in an all out fight. Boxing is a more refined skillset with improved cardio in specific movement patterns for longer. MMA is more multifaceted yet depends on each fighter in terms of their efforts/proclivities in certain areas of the arts but they are more generalists than specialists. The UFC matches top fighters much more than boxing organisations do and the personalities seem to be more varied and fun for younger audiences to be involved with. MMA has more applicability in real world fighting, especially defensively but being able to punch can obviously have real world benefits too.
