You go Islander! Great great show! I've been away for a while but I needed to get back here and get my fix. I looked in the mirror today and for the first time saw the 50-year old that I am. Older, different, and really aging for the first time. And my perspective on boxing is well reflected in your show. I guess you reach a certain age where you have so much history that you can only hope that you can pass on the things that were good and are still relevant about boxing to kids.

Boxinginfo and Bloodboxing always make very informative videos. You can always learn something from them about boxing history. I was dying at the part where bloobboxing mentioned someone ranked Broner no.3 all time because of skill. Legacy > Skill. Anyone can look good pulling shoulder rolls on weak competition, it's about who they've faced.

No offense taken, I should have been clearer about it in the video the fights that mostly ended in 2-5 rounds were mostly in continental Europe specifically France. And a special thanks to you for giving Turpin a shout out he deserves more of them he goes largely forgotten these days.

It could be plausible. But there were news that they cooked the books as PR move for a potential fight with Manny. From JMM-Cotto. Just to solidify his claim of bringing in big profits in the negotiating table. The IRS would be the better judge. He was listed in a magazine as the top earner. The reason behind of Manny not fighting Bradley. Because of the poor sales. This goes back to Islanders point, of not getting the fights we want to see. "Poor Sales".

I think, and I'm probably gunna hear it but the belt and title mixup but the fault might be on Muhammad Ali(although by default). I think when they stripped his title, they stripped the unified title(NABF). When he came back that title (NABF)was owned by Bonavena, which he won back,but here's when it gets confusing.When Ali was in exile,the lineage was broken and it seems that all these belts invented to make more money via promotion.

Moving up wasn't what hurt and I believe it was more like 25lbs, it was the training, competing and then losing the same weight/muscle that ruined him in my opinion. The examples are there to prove it and none better than Prince Charles Williams taking on James Toney @ 168.
@boxinginfo

Jones' chin was dented by Lou DelValle a dangerous puncher. Jones got up and continued beating on him so his chin was not glass. The weight difference between Clinton Woods and Ruiz was a little more than 19 BUT he was over 200lbs after the Ruiz fight in anticipation of fights with Holyfield and Tyson which didn't pan out and had to cut over 25lbs of muscle to fight Tarver and it showed immediately. I'm not defending him, I'm merely pointing out facts.

"But there were news that they cooked the books as PR move for a potential fight with Manny. From JMM-Cotto." Are you talking about Floyd's camp or Pac's camp? I give Manny a lot of props for fighting Bradley. He was a young solid undefeated prime hungry fighter. Tim was a high risk low reward fighter for Manny. But Tim can't draw flies. And to me Tim fought scared and lost the fight. Screw the judges. And I'm hyped to see that rematch. Pac's fights with JMM were closer and sell better.
@kapiatgatas
@kapiatgatas 11 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. That was a prime Manny. I believe he'll beat Juan Diaz and Nate Campbell anyway. But to jump up 2 weight classes, was a risky move. A high risk also a high reward. One sucker punch by Oscar could end Manny's career. But that's boxer's occupational hazard. Because of money and fame. Which I don't blame them anyway. They have to pay their bills and put food on the table. I can't blame Floyd Jr. for choosing Gatti over Tsyzu. Cheery picking can be good and also bad.
@kapiatgatas
@kapiatgatas 11 жыл бұрын
I agree with you 100%. I'll give you a not an equivalent. Manny Pacquiao moving up to 135lbs. The belt holders WBC David Diaz(Top Rank), WBA-WBO Juan Diaz(Leon Margules?) and IBF Julio Diaz(?). Juan defeated Julio and united the belts WBA, WBO and IBF. He was calling out Pacquiao, then lost to Nate Campbell(Don King). David Diaz is the lesser boxer. That's cherry picking "in easy terms of financial matchmaking".

Back then, title fights made more money and for the sport to survive without Ali, the fights promoters needed to make up,or use, "new" sanctioning bodies to help hype the mixed up situation in the Hvywt division.

They tried to make fights with both Holyfield and Tyson and both fell through. Jones priced himself out to a point but the condition of both Tyson and Holyfield at that point really didn't garner the greatest interest either.

We must have to agree to disagree my friend. But it wasn't 25lbs. It was Roy moving up 18lbs from weigh in to weigh in. That is a fact. I think what ruined Jones was him getting old and slowing down a little. Roy was super fast for a 175lb boxer. Nobody could hit him clean. When he slowed and got hit his untested chin was exposed. I always wondered Y RJ didn't KO the guys he was clearly outclassing? It was because he knew his chin was weak and he wasn't going to take any risk to get a KO.
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 11 жыл бұрын
We can disagree its ok but I ask you this, how was Evander going to beat Roy Jones Jr. when Holyfield couldn't beat Ruiz decisively and couldn't avoid being stopped by James Toney? -Never had a chin? Watch the Lou DelValle fight over again then explain to me why Jones didn't stay down when he got drilled in the 7th or 8th round and went down hard.
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 11 жыл бұрын
Marciano over Jones in a 15 round fight, he would have broke him down like Glen Johnson did only worse b/c Rocky would have pounded on his arms relentlessly like he did to so many others and broke the capillaries in Jones' forearms which would have broke down his defense and put serious restrictions on his offense around the 7-8th rounds and the end would have looked like the end for Archie Moore dropped in a heap with no intentions of getting up.

1)15 rounds, 12 rounds, 10 rounds does not mean anything today. If referees prematurely stops or halts the fight early. I wonder if the referee will stop the fight prematurely if Floyd got a Zab Judah knockdown. Favoritism is gonna come in place. I think.

I mean't Floyd'd camp. I actually went to see Bradley's title fight close to his hometown. Oh boy.. betcha... as if the crowds were both camps, camera men and security. A lot of empty chairs. I felt for both Bradley and Alexander. Their fight was a disaster. If only they could have some pride like Israel Vasquez-Rafael Marquez or Gatti-Ward. They would have more money fighting each other, than waiting for a draw with Floyd Jr. and Manny. They got more theatrics in them instead.

Great vid guys. I wish I had the memory you have. Its freakish. However, I disagree with your take on Roy Jones. RJ was a very gifted athlete with great reflexes and speed. RJ was just too fast and athletic for his opponents. Also, I think RJ intimidated many of his opponents. But I don't buy the argument that RJ moving up 18lbs to fight Ruiz ruined him. Many guys move up in weight and then go back down and do fine. RJ just never had a chin. con't...

2) I do oppose to boxers beating an opponent to a plum. This is a deadly sport. But give the benefit of a doubt to boxers who are over-match and beaten round after round. If miracles happen in field and ice. It certainly does happen in the ring too. All it needs a divine intervention, a kitchen sink or "goodness gracious sakes alive".
@hawkermustang
@hawkermustang 11 жыл бұрын
Anyway, I think Roy was a great boxer when it comes to speed and athleticism. I think Roy was the fastest 175lb boxer ever. "Prince Charles Williams taking on James Toney @ 168". I don't remember that and its not relevant to me. Anyway, In a fantasy match up between R. Jones and Rocky M. Who do you think would win? They are really the same weight.
@hawkermustang
@hawkermustang 11 жыл бұрын
Too bad we don't have a time Machine. I would love to have seen those guys both prime fighting. RJ was much faster than Rocky. But Rock was a hard charging bull that would pressure RJ more than anyone he ever fought. Rock didn't fight scared. If he took 2 to land 1 he was happy. My pic is in a 10 rd fight maybe RJ wins on pts. But over 15rds, Rock knocks out RJ. Also, I think of M. Taylor vs Chavez Sr. No way would Taylor survived a 13th rd.
@hawkermustang
@hawkermustang 11 жыл бұрын
Roy just moved up to snatch a paper belt at HW. Ruiz wasn't the champ, Lewis was. RJ just figured Ruiz was very slow and he could exploit that. He did, and Ruiz Just stood there like a punching bag. And after the fight RJ was asked if he would fight Lewis or Tyson? RJ said for 100 million $! That meant HELL NO! Age just caught up to RJ. He was 35 when he lost to Tarver. Once RJ slowed a bit he got chin checked and his weakness was exposed. And once RJ got KOd guys were less intimidated also.
@hawkermustang
@hawkermustang 11 жыл бұрын
Not a good comparison. Manny only had 1 fight at 135 and then he jumped up 2 weight classes to fight Oscar the cash cow at 147. Manny was very prime back then. I think all those boys at 135 would have got the same beating that David Diaz and Oscar DLH got.
@hawkermustang
@hawkermustang 11 жыл бұрын
Yep, I don't think Roy belonged at HW anyway. Roy was thinking about fighting Old Buster Douglas at HW for 6 mill. And RJ dad talked him out of taking that fight saying Buster was too big. And Evender KO'd Buster in 3rds 10 years prior. Roy said he didn't want to fight any HW's. He just wanted a HW belt to put on his resume. Also Ruiz was a mugger. And ref Jay Nady will not allow that. He is the opposite of Steve Smoger. Ruiz should have never let Nady ref that fight. But props to RJ anyway.

Don't count RJ out. Yes he could loose to Morrison, Lewis, Holyfield, Rahman. But any boxer with his resume has a shot than others. As a boxer moving up in weight for the first time. With WBA, WBA, IBF and WBO champion boxers to choose from. Conventional wisdom choose wisely: (1)the opponent that you can match, (2)the opponent that is willing to fight and (3)the opponent that will accept terms. Floyd Jr. chose Gatti over Tsyzu why? Ask Zab Judah and uncle Roger Mayweather.

I don't really get your point? I give RJ props for winning a HW belt, but my point is he cherry picked the weakest belt holder and had zero interest in fighting Lewis or Tyson. He priced himself out of fighting those guys. That is a crafty way to duck fights. Lewis would have KOd Jones no doubt in my mind. Many boxers get fat and then lose weight to fight is my point. Roy just always had a suspect chin. But in his prime it wasn't an issue. I'm not bashing RJ either.

Paper belt or not, fighting a natural heavyweight is not to be taken lightly. How about Floyd Jr. asking $100M to fight Pacquiao in South Africa for Mandela's birthday? What if someone did show the money $100M. Then will know who's backing out. Big George said "age is not a death sentence". He won a belt at 45. It could be anything "cause and effect". Age, drugs, vices, bad luck or luck on Tarver. He may lost to Lewis, but it does not mean RJ has no shot?
@kapiatgatas
@kapiatgatas 11 жыл бұрын
Dude watch the video again. RJ was coming down in weight. From heavyweight to light-heavyweight to fight Antonio Tarver. How would Floyd Jr. and Manny fair if they move down to 130lbs-135lbs respectively. That's only 17lbs and 12lbs respectively. "I agree many boxers can but not all".

Even though Tyson was on the decline Roy only had a 1-100 shot of beating Tyson. And Roy had a 1-1000 shot of beating L. Lewis, maybe less. Any HW that hit Roy in the head could knock him out. But Ruiz was a punching bag. Ruiz tried to win in the 1st rd. After that he gave up. And the ref Jay Nayde sucks always. He don't allow infighting. He is a shit ref. I disagree with my man boxinginfo. Evander, Tyson, and 4 sure Lewis would have murdered Roy. Roy never had a chin IMO.
