I was walking home from the pub listening to the Ruddock/Lewis fight, I wasn't even half way home when Ruddock hit the canvas! I wasn't expecting that.

I agree with your analysis of Joshua-Takam. I think that this was a good learning fight for Joshua. One difference between Joshua and Lennox Lewis is that Lewis only seemed to improve in the wake of disasters (mainly the McCall fight) whereas Joshua is steadily improving, and sometimes improving mid-fight e.g. he looked better towards the end of the Klitschko fight. Takam was just the sort of credible challenger he needed at this point. Ruddock-Lewis was the first boxing match I ever saw! The next was McClellan-Benn, and then I started to watch regularly in the late 1990s. Lewis never looked better until he was trained by Manny Steward. I re-watched Tyson-Ruddock 2 and it's easy to forget just how good Ruddock was. In particular, his chin is underrated: there's no shame in getting knocked down by Bonecrusher, Tyson, and Morrison, and TKO'd by Lewis.

On Lewis and tall boxers: he also went after Riddick Bowe very aggressively in the Olympics. Even though you can argue that it was a quick stoppage (no quicker than many in the Olympics) it was clear that Lewis was in seek-and-destroy mode, and Bowe didn't have the defensive tools to handle it.

That was exactly the kind of fight that Joshua needed.

With Ken Norton: you nearly got it right, but it was Spinks who gave up the WBC title to fight Ali in a rematch, rather than Norton. Given that the purse for fighting Ali was probably several times higher than fighting Norton, and Norton was probably the bigger threat, that made sense for Spinks. As it happened, he trained on booze and pot, and looked terrible against Ali, who also looked like he was slipping rapidly.

@Myndir thank you for getting me straight on that. I have images in my mind of Norton (RIP) in a 3 piece suit having the belt strapped around his waist. Just like former President Gerald Ford, who was also named the top dog without winning the fight for the title/position and then lost in his next fight/election. Chronological timing was close as well.

I completely 100% agree with you it was an early stoppage that is pretty much the general consensus I believe Although I don’t think Carlos was going to win the fight anyway so it doesn’t matter in my opinion it is just unfortunate that that happened I also think it is unfortunate that Ortiz failed his drug test Wilder just seems to have bad luck with that because this isn’t the first time that happened to him his opponent failing a drug test meaning That this day boxing history series is going to be pretty cool that was Lewis is coming out party as a top heavyweight contender The Mike Tyson fights took a lot out of Razor in my opinion actually both of them especially the 2nd fight and also that began the second best heavyweight time period in boxing history in my opinion the 70s being the Best I don’t understand why bowe Never fought Lewis because I think he would have beaten him especially the younger version

@boxingguru100 the consensus thinking at the time was Rock Newman Bowe's manager wanted nothing to do with Lewis as Lewis stopped Bowe in the 1988 Olympic Finals. Personally I believe if they would have fought in 1993 and all conditions would have been optimal (meaning the same conditioned Bowe who showed up for Holyfield) then Bowe who had a better chin would have beaten the this cruder version of Lewis.

boxinginfo Thanks for explaining that I never knew that about Bowe Manager Regardless it is unfortunate that the fight never happened Bo is one of the biggest underachievers in boxing history The Holyfield fights Took his career Basically because of the damage he had sustained in those three fights.

Who would you rank higher overall Manuel Medina or Daniel Zaragoza, both had very similar careers. Who wins Danny Lopez vs Antonio Esparagoza, Bazooka Limon vs Arturo Gatti
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 6 жыл бұрын
@162773 I would rank Zaragoza higher he had a better body of work imo. I give a slight edge to Esparragoza although I would like to see what would happen if he had to look up to a taller guy like Lopez. Gatti because he had enough sense to box when he needed to AND unlike Navarette who could hit just as hard as Gatti - Arturo could take shots a million times better than Navarette and if Limon couldn't put away Chacon in the 4th fight (which I expected him to do) he wouldn't be able to do it to Gatti.

@boxinginfo - what do you think about making neutral refs and judges compulsory for world title fights? Most of the British officials are like an old-boys club. Hardly rate any of them.
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 6 жыл бұрын
@somersetfan1 Almost impossible to do because of how "global" the sport has become. Only way of possibly doing it is the way the referees are assigned for the College American Style Football Bowl season - usually not always the referees from a non competing conference will be assigned to a game between the powers of 2 other conferences.

I actually saw a big ass poster of Anthony Joshua in my local Dick's Sporting Goods store(I live in Pennsylvania). Fingers crossed this guy's the champion we all hope he is. Very happy with him so far.

@ Daniel Turin I think everybody is happy with him so far, and I think its kind of ironic/funny that the UK finally has the Ali/Leonard/Golden Boy type champion who is quite possibly the biggest marketable boxer in the world at this point in time. Not sure 78K or 90K would show up live to see FMJ or Canelo fight. Maybe Canelo in a good fight at Azteca Stadium or Pacquiao in the Phiippines.

Anthony Joshua is a poster boy for promoter Eddie Hearn and SKY tv corporation. Joshua fights "hand picked opponents '. HOW can Joshua be considered the best? When Joshua is fighting lesser ranked opponent's. Thank you .
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 6 жыл бұрын
@peckerdecker who said Joshua was the best? He can't get Tyson Fury in the ring who he;s going to destroy but takes on the last lineal Heavyweight champion in Klitschko and your saying they're hand picked? Maybe they are but there are a lot of bums out there he could be fighting instead of Klitschko and Takam.

boxinginfo HI. Thank you for the reply. Champion Joshua beat an OLD 45-50 year OLD klitchcko. Plus klitchko already got beat by Tyson fury two years earlier. Basically- Anthony Joshua is ALL sizzle and no steak.
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 6 жыл бұрын
@ peckerdecker you're entitled to your opinion and you may prove to be correct. BUT lets get a few facts straight: 1.Klitschko was a rested 41 year old who performed as well as he ever had. 2.Fury "won" over Klitschko he didn't "BEAT" him - he won a game of checkers Joshua BEAT Klitschko there is a major difference.
@peckerdecker
@peckerdecker 6 жыл бұрын
boxinginfo hi sir. Thank you for the reply. I prefer to look at the actual "records ". Fury out-smarted and BEAT klitchko in klitchkos HOMETOWN. Whilst Eddie Hearn "brought ' over klitchko to Joshua's hometown of London. Plus Joshua got KNOCKED down by klichko- a middle aged beaten former champ. Hype is a lovely thing- but I like to "question '. Warmly.
@boxinginfo
@boxinginfo 6 жыл бұрын
@ peckerdecker you're very welcome and I'm not claiming Joshua is the best. I still would like to see what would happen if Wilder bounced the same right hand off his chin that Klitchko did. Keeping in mind Wilder is about to fight a rematch with a guy far more dangerous than anybody Joshua has fought up to date. As long as they're making money and selling out football stadiums- Joshua could fight tomato cans and his team wouldn't care. Its us the public who pay for premium cable and expensive tickets who will dictate how long this can go on. The reason why people on both sides of the pond are excited is that nobody knows for sure who's better between Wilder and Joshua.
