I would recommend egg weights no more than 1-1.5 pounds per hand. When you’re sparring you have weight on the gloves 14-16 ounces plus the hand wrap and training with weights in that range CAN increase your endurance to maintain in the later rounds.

Yes. Light dumbbells are a great way to train the type 1 muscle fibers which are responsible for muscular endurance. 2-3 rounds followed by one round without the weights is a great warm up.

What are your thoughts on using this to increase robustness? I know you say that the load doesn't act in the appropriate plane, but by increasing the weight of the fist we increase force demands to both accelerate the fist and, more importantly, to decelerate the fist which would create a high degree of eccentric demand and lead to increased robustness round the back of the shoulder as well as greater speed of recoil following the punching action. I am just wondering if this could be an additional but unspoken benefit of shadowboxing with weights.

I wouldn’t use it period Look into the research relating to heavy baseballs and the inheritant cause of injury in season following their use. Not to mention the change in biomechanics and motor pattern to adjust the movement to the resistance You inherently just become better at boxing’s. weights with no transfer to the sport. Any conditioning you think you are getting is at the increased risk of injury If you want to be better at keeping hands up - keep them up!!!!

Every one of these videos is overlooking the primary forces involved with adding weight to the hands. The primary force IS NOT gravity! The primary force is the velocity times the mass generated by the strike itself! The power required to set an object in motion is half the power required to stop and immediately revers that motion. This is where the benefit comes from. It is a speed exercise.
