When I saw your post that you had Boxwoods bight a ways back, I was very nervous . I have a lot of Boxwoods approx. 20 years old in my gardens. I watched what you were doing very closely I 'm very happy that you have found a way to grow Boxwoods and things are looking optimistic .Not so much for me , late last summer I had 4 huge Boxwoods suddenly defoliate and die. On inspection I found caterpillars, webbing, and with guidance from the Cornell Coop.Extension I found Boxwood Tree Moths. I did everything they told me to do. We injected with Systemic , fed, and monitored . I watched with trepidation as the spring foliage started to bloom. Things looked ok, then we got a hot 88 degree day in May -within 48 hours all my Boxwoods were gone. I lost approximately 25-30 large Boxwoods, even the newer little ones I had planted a few years back. Gone. We ripped everything out and I have started to search for options to replace my Boxwoods - not an easy chore. My sadness is hard to describe , most gardeners would understand. Folks beware, my little town in the edge of Lake Ontario is the first to have this Moth , an import from Canada. It may very well spell disaster for Boxwoods here and everywhere.

I am so very sorry this has happened to your boxwoods. The high temps here in East TN have been devastating to plant material. Best wishes for your future plantings.

Import from Canada? We understand it came from Asia, via the United States and entered Canada from the US through Niagara Falls.

Great information for folks who are planting boxwood for the first time in their garden. I’ve seen it available at the big box store too at a reasonable price. Love seeing Dorothy ❤

Better boxwoods look promising, if only they were resistant to boxwood moth.. anyways, just wanted to say you look amazing! The dappled shade of the trees, afternoon sunlight on your face, lovely surroundings of your garden.. looking primo, girl!👌 Happy gardening!

Boxwood do add a great texture to our garden and love the evergreen part of them. I saw a unique planting the other day, it was formal, but inspired me with a good idea. They had boxwood hedge, square, surrounding Persicaria Mountain Fleece plant. My Persicaria was flopping forward, so I put a smaller leafed perennial in front of it. Good contrast.

I planted 5 of the renaissance in the terraced area between my two tiered retaining walls. I needed something small. I had tried 'tater tots' years ago in a different area and didn't love them, so I was excited to learn about these. Mine are still very young and time will tell if they were the right choice. But so far, so good.

Thanks. I’m looking to use boxwoods for a low formal hedge in part of my garden and blight is a concern. I’m also newly designated zone 5a, so would really prefer the few types that are more reliably zone 4 hardy, just in case. And now I’ve been hearing about this moth. 😢
@mrsrover89976 ай бұрын
I'm in zone 4 so I'm not even going to try boxwoods, but I wish I could! They're beautiful plants.

So this is the first time seeing your dog ❤. I’m kinda new to your channel. But I just realized the last 30 seconds went in one ear and out the those. With ADHD it’s very hard to focus. So just a funny realization. I’ll rewind. 😅

Hey Erin! Have you heard of or have any experience with the new firefly petunias? They glow in the dark! They found a chemical in a naturally bioluminescent mushroom that they were able to breed into the flowers somehow. So cool! Can’t wait to see what other plants they might try it on!!

If I had what I think was boxwood blight last year, can I plant these better boxwoods in the same place now? South Central Ohio’s boxwoods were hit hard with something.

Does Wisconsin have Box Tree Moth (Cydalima perspectalis)?
@TheImpatientGardener7 ай бұрын
Not yet, to my knowledge, but it’s knocking on the door for sure. Fortunately it can be managed with BT applied at the right time but it is an additional consideration.

Erin, do you deal with boxwood psyllids? If so, do you do anything or just wait it out?
@pamelacorsi7 ай бұрын
I'm concerned about them being only down to zone 5. Even though I'm in a MA zone 6 we get polar vortex winds once or twice a winter and it takes out my zone 5 shrubs and plants.
@socutebracelets7 ай бұрын
Most boxwoods are zone 5. I’ve found a few that are listed as zone 4, but not many.

Do you have a view on how these compare with the NewGen varieties of blight resistant boxwoods?

Maybe talk to a local garden center about it. My guess is is that the state may have banned boxwoods from out of state (because of blight) but nurseries and garden centers probably can get them as they are blight resistant or have a source for BB that were grown in state. . (Just guessing in all that though).
@j.m.70567 ай бұрын
