For four years, the courageous crew of the NSEA protector -"Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" (Tim Allen),"Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver) and"Dr.Lazarus" (Alan Rickman) - set off on a thrilling and often dangerous mission in space...and then their series was cancelled! Now, twenty years later, aliens under attack have mistaken the Galaxy Quest television transmissions for"historical documents" and beam up the crew of has-been actors to save the universe. With no script, no director and no clue, the actors must turn in the performances of their lives.
Key moments
Actors: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, Robin Sachs, Patrick Breen, Missi Pyle, Jed Rees
Director: Dean Parisot

@@AwesomeUSMovies Tony Shalub also said in an interview that his concept for the character was that he was stoned the entire time. Watching the interviews with the cast and crew for Galaxy Quest is almost as much fun as the actual movie was. They were all a bunch of super talented people at the top of their game and had an absolute blast with the movie. Other fun facts are that in the original version of the movie Sigourney Weavers character is swearing the entire time and you can in fact see in the scene when they get to the chompers that she actually says "Oh fuck this" which was dubbed over with "Oh screw this" after the fact. They decided to make the movie PG-13 so she had to come back in and re-dub or re-shoot many of her lines and scenes. The real star of the show though was Enrico Colantoni who played Malthesar. They didn't really know how to do the Thermians but Enrico Colantoni came up with several quirks that he used during his audition for how they should be played. The directors loved his interpretation of the Thermians so much they immediately cast him and then showed his audition tape to all the other people auditioning to play Thermians and basically told them "do this, this right here is what we want" which is VERY much not how auditions are normally run.

The character of Guy Fleegman was an intentional homage to a very busy Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Guy Vardaman, who not only played several no-name extras in the series, but also served as a stunt/stand-in double for Brent Spiner (Data) and Wil Wheaton (Wesley). His reaction to the homage: 'I just about fell out of the chair!' having forgotten being told that the character would appear in a film someday."

For me, that was the best scene in the show. I think most men, at some point in their lives, are confronted by reality, and have the personal illusions which have sustained them ripped away. Alan Rickman didn't like Allen to start with, because he didn't think he was a serious actor--just a comedian who was so popular, they decided to try him on TV. Apparently Allen acted a lot like his character on the set, joking and playing around and not being serious. Rickman came to like him better after that scene because he could see he really did come to work.

This movie isn’t a rip off. A rip off is when someone takes someone else’s ideas and creations and claims it as their own original thing. That’s just straight up stealing. This movie is more of a parody/homage to Star Trek. If you ask almost any Trekkie about this movie they will say how much they loved it, mainly because you can tell how much the makers loved the original show and, although it’s a comedy, they were treating it seriously. Great movie on many levels.

@@malcolmdrake6137 a rip-off maintains most original names etc, a parody does not . And also in original Star Trek series there is no breaking 4th wall or acknowledging it is a show. This movie starts with the premise that it is a long discontinued show and the devoted fans still care for it (kinda like Firefly) and how it is for the actors long time after show stopped, with conventions and enjoying still some popularity etc and is this exact aspect about conventions etc and the meta of the ensemble cast post show that intrigued, entertained and won the love of Star Trek show alumni actors plus a simple rip-off would never have been voted among best Star Trek movies made, scoring higher even than some of the movies that were legitimately part of the franchise. And that waaaay before The Orville was made which many fans preferred over ST:D.

The germ of this movie came from a Star Trek fan story called "Visit to a Weird Planet" and its sequel "Visit to a Weird Planet Revisited." Someone had read those and after decades fronted the idea and produced a script. The producers stayed out of hot water with Paramount with some clever things like the serial number on the ship. The prefix is NTE for "not the Enterprise." There is a special on KZbin on the making of Galaxy Quest and it is well worth watching. Oh, and Galaxy Quest was up for the Hugo Award in 2000 against some very tough competition that included The Matrix, Sixth Sense, and another major movie. GALAXY QUEST WON! The combination of humor and pathos and drama and comedy was unbeatable.

That's a perfectly reasonable explanation. Here's the one I went with: Jason Nesmith and Mathesar are the only ones who remember, because only those two characters were involved in 'ACTIVATING' the Omega-13 (Mathesar 'primes' it, somehow, and Jason presses the 'GO!' button.) So... the device 'knows' who turned it on, and sends those two people back 13 seconds into the past. No one else remembers, because no one else touched (or had a role in interfacing with) the device.

If you love books and want to see movies, then a really good choice is "The Princess Bride". It was originally a book written by William Goldman. He was also the scriptwriter behind classic movies like "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", so when the book was optioned for a movie, he was the perfect choice to write the movie script. As a result, the movie has the same great feel as the book. It's the best adaptation of book to movie I know.

Such a fun look at "Star ****" fandom and Sci-Fi convention culture. It's always refreshing when one can laugh self-deprecatingly, and I feel that this movie accomplishes that without insult. I've been a Trekkie since the early '70s, and even though I've never attended any of the conventions, I feel this movie captures the spirit of them (or at least how I imagine they are). The conflicting "personalities" among actors when not in character, the "diva" complex of some actors, the over-memed and cliche "catch phrases", the in-universe tech & techno-babble lines (which are mere gibberish in the real world) and which becomes "canon reality" to be seriously considered and debated as "science", can all be connected to actual examples in well-known Sci-Fi franchises.

Actor notes: Tim Allen (Jason Nesmith) was Scott Calvin/Santa in "The Santa Clause." Sigourney Weaver (Gwen DeMarco) was Ripley in the "Alien" movies, and in "Ghostbusters." Alan Rickman (Alexander Dane/Snape from Harry Potter) was in "Die Hard." Tony Shalhoub (Fred) - never seen him before on this channel, but his most famous role is the TV series "Monk." Sam Rockwell (Guy Fleegman) was Wild Bill Wharton in "The Green Mile." Daryl Mitchell (Tommy) - never seen him on the channel; this is arguably his most recognizable role, as he was paralyzed from the waist down following a 2001 motorcycle accident. Missi Pyle (Laliari) - Noreen in "50 First Dates," and Fran in "Dodgeball" (the Globo Gym girl with the unibrow) Justin Long (Brandon, the nerdy fan) was in "Dodgeball," as the one who gets hit with the wrench during practice.

Give him a hand, he's British! This movie is great because it succeeds on so many levels. It's a love-letter to Star Trek. It's a parody of Star Trek and science fiction tropes in general. It's a fantastic sci-fi comedy all on its own. The subtle hints that Fred Kwan was stoned out of his mind the _entire_ movie (always snacking, very easy-going, stoned-out look on his face most of the time, and a puff of smoke as his late-arrivaled pod dissipates around him). You don't _have_ to know a thing about sci-fi to enjoy this movie, but the more you _do_ know, the more you will get out of it.

Alan Rickman’s character was a parody of Spock from Star Trek. His hate for saying the “By Grabthar’s hammer” line was a reflection of Leonard Nimoy’s dislike for his “Live long and prosper” quote because it was like the line had become very cliched and the only thing his character was remembered for. There are other similarities but I won’t mention them because I’m not sure if you’ve seen the original Star Trek films.

Enrico Collantoni auditioned for Malthasar. He played it straight. No one was impressed. He asked to play it again using vocal warm up techniques. He basically came up with the Thermian speech pattern and movements on the spot. They hured him and had him train all the others playing Thermians. Guy Fleegman was the then mostly unknown Sam Rockwell. He did this abd Wild Bill in The Green Mile the same year. He's done a ton of things since. Tony Shaloub was playing as if his character was stoned which is why he was so calm throughout and eating on the shuttle. He was previously known fir Wings abd then the lead on Monk. He appeared in Men in Black as well. Laredo was played by Vorbin Blye as a kid and Daryl Mitchell as an adult. He starred in 10 Things I Hate About You the same year. Two years later he was in a motorcycle accident and paralyzed from the waist down. He is wheelchair vound but never stopoed acting. He was a regular cast member on CSI: New Orkeabscfrom 2014-21 and a recurring actor on Fear the Walking dead currently. Corbin Blue was briefly a big nane from a couple Disney TV movies High School Musical 1 & 2. Though I rarely hear about him, he has beeen constantly acting since.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. As a long time "Star Trek" fan, I found this movie to be great fun and hoped for a sequel. These days, I'd settle for a "Basic Cable TV series," free of the usual excesses and THE MESSAGE of streaming services. Note: Sigorurney Weaver stipulated that she would be a Blonde in this movie. She said that she could feel her IQ dropping every time she wore the wig...all the way home.;) Tony Shalhoub has been in the TV series "Monk" and many movies; his character is on an MJ high through the movie. The "Brandon" character was Justin Long's first major movie role. This movie can be enjoyed by anyone, which is proof of that this is a Classic. Staying in 1999, take a look at "The Iron Giant" and/or "October Sky," two 1957-Sputnik Era tales. The former animated feature asks if a Gun has a Soul and can decide NOT to be a weapon of destruction. The latter is the tale of Coal Town teens hoping to see the world outside, launching model rockets, one at a time. (A look at the early life of Homer Hickam, Jr., NASA scientist.)

The thing is, even if you are not familiar with the tropes, the movie explains enough for you to understand them. You get that Guy was an extra in the show only to be there to be killed. That's the 'Redshirt' trope from Star Trek. In the original Star Trek show, when they went to a planet they had a number of people from security with them and they were only to be there to be killed off. The security staff always wore red shirts. In the original show they were the only ones wearing red shirts. In the later Star Trek shows they changed the colours of the shirt and mixed it up story wise so that it wasn't predictable any more. But you don't have to know that to understand that Guy was an extra to be killed off and feared that now he was about to be killed off for real. That's the joke in the movie. If you know the trope and are a fan, you appreciate it, but it doesn't make it more or less funny. And yes, people dress up like from movies and shows on conventions. Some of them are quite serious about it and factor in any detail no matter how minor. And yes, there are fans that have mapped out the ships and understand the fictional science behind the technology in these shows and movies and notice if there are discrepancies in them. In short, you have missed nothing. You just can't appreciate it like fans do. That's part of the genius of this movie.

About Mathesar - he's one of those "chameleon" actors who can slip into any role and you'd never recognize him. I loved him in "Just Shoot Me!" From Wikipedia: Enrico Colantoni (born February 14, 1963) is a Canadian actor and director, best known for portraying Elliot DiMauro in the sitcom Just Shoot Me!, Keith Mars on the television series Veronica Mars, Louis Lutz on the short-lived sitcom Hope & Gloria, crime lord Carl Elias on Person of Interest, and Sergeant Greg Parker on the television series Flashpoint. He has also had supporting roles in such films as The Wrong Guy, Galaxy Quest, A.I. Your take on how appreciative the early 2000s were of what came before sounds even sadder now that we're reaching a point of creative bankruptcy in movies, where everything is a sequel, a remake or an adaptation of existing properties. While back then we knew what we'd been given and were thankful for its legacy, now it seems that what's being made is almost all extremely "empty" and forgetful. The past was supposed to serve as inspiration, not as a crutch to hold a dying industry.

I also was a bookworm. Still am. Always have two books going...one for when I am on the subway and one for when I am sitting on the toilet. But in my day being a bookworm often meant being a real nerd and getting into science fiction like Star Trek. I went to many a convention as a teenager. So this movie really is up my alley. Both parody and homage to the genre and to a whole nerd community. Now conventions like this are considered cool. In my day it was practically the definition of being a nerd.

Sigourney Weaver did indeed star in "Alien." Tony Shalhoub (Tech Sergeant Chen) played a former detective with OCD in a comedy/mystery television series. The character was named Adrian Monk, and the series was just named "Monk." Throughout "Galaxy Quest," Mr. Shalhoub played his character as being constantly stoned (hence the munchies). Enrico Colantoni (Mathis) has been in several movies and television series; the one I remember him from is a television series named "Person of Interest."
