I agree. It's like miniaturization tech, they took all them shows and movies and shrunk most the good stuff even the fans into one. Even bits like the teleporter accident which I just saw again in a Trek Movie reaction. Piglizard, what was left of it didn't live long. Episodes that boil down to prime directive and such, messing with a people that don't know what a lie is. I'm sure somebody can talk more about what is in this film enough to kill the fun of it all and tackle some philosophical aspect of it, but I'm just here for the ride.

In interviews, Tony Shalhoub said it was the 'always high' thing he came up with that allowed him to finally anchor into the character. Also amusing is the Fred Kwan character didn't 'look' Asian, so when he was aware of being seen as 'Tech Sergeant Chen', 'Kwan' would habitually scrunch up his eyes to try to look more Asian.

👍There's that, too, but... My take on it was that, since this incorporates so much of the back history of the Star Trek franchise, it seemed reflective of at least the criticism of hiring an Irish-Canadian with a bad Scottish accent to play the Scottish ship's engineer. The (all too correct) thought in the 1960s was that Americans can't tell the difference. I loved James Doohan, but he was certainly not Scottish. Still, he did make it to space before Shatner did (his ashes now orbit Earth; RIP 'Scotty'). Then again, we seem to be going through a plethora of British actors playing key film roles speaking American accents these days... @@goldenageofdinosaurs7192

You are gonna love this! Fred was always stoned which is why he was so calm and carried a bag of munchies wherever he went. One of Galaxy Quest's running gags is the nearly constant quiet calm of Fred Kwan (Tony Shalhoub), who doesn't seem to respond appropriately to any of the peril and weirdness that happens throughout the film. It's easy to read the chill, frequently snacking Fred as being in a marijuana-fueled haze throughout the action. This is actually deliberate, and is a holdover from the original intent that Galaxy Quest be a more adult-oriented comedy.

Yes it is. Shalub said in an interview: So Dean (director) said to me, “Why don’t you take a look at the pilot for Kung Fu?” You know, the David Carradine show? “Because that was a guy who wasn’t an Asian guy playing an Asian guy.” This got really convoluted. [Laughs.] So I watched David Carradine, and then we found out that there was this rumor-I don’t think it was a rumor, I think it was a legend-that David Carradine just smoked a lot of weed on that show. That was the thing. That’s how he was able to channel that kind of Zen, unflappable character. So we decided, “Well, maybe that’s what happened to Fred, too: He just became this kind of burnout.” And then we just kind of rewrote it as we went along. Dean and the writers, we just kind of made it up as we went along, based on that idea: that he’d smoked an enormous amount of pot.@@Devious_Reviews

The best Star Trek movie that is not a Star Trek movie! It is a masterpiece! There is a great documentary about the making of the movie, and it has a moving tribute to the late Alan Rickman. Personally, this is in my top three favorite roles Rickman played...Professor Severus Snape (Harry Potter) is number 1, Dr. Lazarus/Alexander Dane (GalaxyQuest) is number 2, and Colonel Christopher Brandon (Sense and Sensibility) is number 3. Hans Gruber (Die Hard) is number 4. There is a great story about Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation) refusing to see the film until his co-star Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) told him that he needed to on a Saturday night in a full theater. Stewart went and fell in love with the movie. He had been afraid the film would belittle the fans and the culture of science fiction shows like Star Trek...and if anything, the movie celebrates them...celebrates all of us, no matter the fandom we belong to.

Star Trek is infamous among nerd culture for being one of the first series to be able to support their own specific conventions. This lead among other things to the phenomenon where actors who'd been on one of the shows or worked behind-the-scenes could have a second career doing the convention circuit, which was followed by various other franchises over the years. The film highlights the varying attitudes towards the work, with some real life actors being openly disdainful of their current position (not naming names), and others like the late David Axelrod never tiring of reminiscing about his stint as Lord Zed on Power Rangers.

10:49 - This right here is 'real.' Actors on Star Trek had their own ideas of how the control panels on the ship worked and would hit buttons according to how THEY felt the panel worked. In-world, the computer recognized the crew member using it and aligned it's interface to the user's preferences. This may not seem like a big deal now, but in the late 80s/early 90s, it was a mind-blowing concept. When Star Trek: Picard brought back the Enterprise-D, Wil Wheaton was given a tour and he described (and remember, this is 20 years later) how he 'drove' the ship: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4PPhISfjtN3gqs 12:48 - I'm not sure about your Star Trek background, but Guy here is talking about what is called 'Red Shirt Syndrome.' In the original Star Trek, ship's operations staff wore red uniforms This included Security. If the character beamed down to a planet and they brought extras in red shirts with them, it was almost guaranteed that at least one of them would be dying within 3 minutes. In later series the color classifications changed, but the term 'red shirt' was still used to refer to an extra whose only narrative purpose was to die. 20:35 - Hey, look! It's my favorite Metroid Prime boss! A large part of this movie is a satire on Trek culture. The fans at the convention are Trekkies, Tim Allen was William Shatner, and the movie referenced all sorts of tropes from classic sci-fi series. They even make a 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' reference with the 'Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues' segment at the end. RIP Allen Rickman.

It was general and self-contained enough to be entertaining to those who don't follow Star Trek... it has something to say (and not just in a mean sense) about fandom in general. It's walks a fine line between honouring the source material, and being (mostly good natured) satire of the human nature that creeps into everything. And the aliens were entertaining as Hell on their own, and especially in conjunction with our unexpected space travellers! Great reaction!

The commander actually can't run the computer because he has to run everything else. Also, the person running the computer, actually has the best communication skills of the team so it fits quite well.

Have I been on a starship before? As a high school student many decades ago, I was lucky enough to visit the set of the original Star Trek series during production. Years later, another friend brought me in to visit the Next Generation set during production. So, yeah. I have.

it's actually really amazing how well this movie holds up, despite it coming out way back in 1999. with comic con and stuff being bigger than ever today, it's funny how accurately they nailed that aspect of it (and obsessive fandoms in general). you know a movie is very intelligently written when it can still be very funny while also remaining family friendly, which not a lot of movies can pull off. this movie needs way more love! alan rickman is so perfect as the annoyed, disenfranchised "serious" actor who is trapped in a life of reciting his irritating catchphrase to nerds at a convention. definitely one of my favorite roles

As far as sci-fi action comedies go, you’re justified in calling it a masterpiece. It’s very clever and well paced and well plotted.

The best part of the movie can only really be enjoyed in a theater! When he is leaving the real ship for the first time the aspect ration changes from TV size, to regular movie size, to wide screen when he is looking out at the universe!

Leo, the deleted scenes show that he was high the whole time to make it easier to squint since he was playing an Asian. That brown paper bag he was carrying earlier in the move was filled with edibles even the cheesesnack

This satirical sci-fi comedy gives people exactly what should be expected from this genre. I consider it an excellent film for what it is.

Galaxy Quest is consistently voted as one of the best Star Trek movies ever made, despite not being a Star Trek film. It is certainly a love letter to the series.

I just re-watched this again a few months ago to show my 18 year old what a classic sci-fi satire it was. I still love the 'screw that' line where Sigourney Weaver's mouth very clearly doesn't match up with the word 'screw'.

Many people have called this movie a masterpiece. I even think a famous director or two have called this film a masterpiece. And I agree. A near perfect film. Just the right amount of comedy, drama, and action/adventure. And I even think the special effects still hold up pretty well after all these years. Of course, it doesn't hurt that some of it is not intended to look realistic. A well written, acted, and directed fun film. And your delightful critique is what I've come to expect from you. I don't think I say it near enough, (actually, I know I don't), but you always brighten my day with your humor and your overall attitude. You always bring a smile to my face and a laugh to my lips. Thank you for just being you.

When this movie came out, it wasn't cool to be a geek. The world hadn't changed yet due to World of Warcraft, the Lord of the Rings movies, or the Marvel movies. Having a movie that celebrated super geekdom was a surprising point of view at the time.
