Watch Boyz N' The Hood Now: AAN.SonyPicture...
BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality. "The Hood" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony coexists with adversity, especially for three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond "The Hood." In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne)who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and violence seems like the only recourse.

Yeah it’s a movie but watching this scene just makes me realize how everyone here is reacting to Ricky’s death, and expressing it in their own way. Monster is grieving but still keeping his eye out for any trouble, dookie crying but hiding his tears, Chris in shock, Tre obviously the one who doesn’t hide the love he had for him and Doughboy in disbelieve that his brother is dead but doesn’t know how to show emotion and compassion because he never received any..

Tre is right. Joined the corps, deployed, did my time and served the country but damn, did the experience legit changed how I looked at the military. To them, the colonels and generals, you’re just a damn social security number and a daily count on a morning report. You’re an expendable resource the moment you signed the dotted line, regardless if you signed up to “fight for our country.” Majority of your command don’t care about you as a person or an individual. You do find some leaders who are great and guide, direct, and lead you, but your command doesn’t really care about that’s. They leave that to your small unit leadership. The upper chain of the command mostly just wants to ensure you’re not a liability, and that you’re on par with their standards so they can use you. Sure, you do some cool stuff and meet new people who you connect with and even become friends with, but the mission and overall purpose ain’t something heroic or brave like “fighting for our freedom.”

One of the saddest moments of cinema history. But a true reality to people who grow up in these kinds of areas. Lives are taken often over nothing. And the level of awareness you need to have in order to survive day to day is unreal. It is a literal civil war zone. Either make it out the hood or try to change it for the better. Either option is a journey, one is just a bit more arduous than the other and will likely take many generations.
