It didn't "allow" 🙄🙄🙄 ...just because Paich and 2 of the Porcaro brothers were on these sessions did not "lead to" Toto.🙄🙄 ...just because you're not aware of the details of the history and want to conflate anything you recognize from the past with later events doesn't make it accurate or astute, in any way! ...all of the guys who, later, recorded as Toto were doing hundreds of sessions up & down the coast in those years. ...🤦
@zackattack63512 күн бұрын
@ “In early 1977, Paich and Porcaro started working on the demos for what would become the Toto album, drafting their friend Lukather - who'd performed with them in the band Rural Still Life while they were all still in high school - and then bringing him into Scaggs' touring band as a replacement for guitarist Les Dudek. By the end of the year, the group had a deal with Columbia Records, as well as a new lead singer: former S.S. Fools frontman Bobby Kimball.” They were literally backing Boz on his tour. Boz is the reason they got signed… even if they were known musicians. Silk degrees and his tour were their break. Undeniably so.
@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra11 күн бұрын
@@zackattack635 o.k. Thank you. (apparently you DO know the details 🤷🤦). ...I am not too sure about the Les Dudek "replacement" (I'm not saying 'Luke' didn't play with them-that's not it!). I have seen live film from this tour and Dudek is playing on-stage with them (maybe The had Dudek & Luke for a while and Dudek had to leave or had something else on his plate, simultaneously 🤷🤷). ...Dudek was on Down Two, Then Left; as well. 🤷🤷 ...but, o.k.: I take your point.

A cool little factoid abut Boz Scaggs, he was a Prep High School roommate of Steve Miller ("Fly Like An Eagle', "Jet Airliner", "Living In The USA"). And Steve Miller was the Godson of Les Paul, who basically invented the Electric Guitar, So it is ALL connected. Another goodie from Boz is "Lido Shuffle", from the same album.

Back when Toto was putting together the demo for their debut album in the mid-70's, they had a song titled 'Tales of a Man'. While listening to it, Mr. Scaggs liked the changes in the middle of the song. And they pretty much built an entire song around those changes. Written by David Paich, Toto's pianist, and built around Toto's groove-master drummer Jeff Porcaro. People can find the inspiration for the song on 'Toto XX'.
@philipmccarthy617512 күн бұрын
Everybody talks about Toto, but after their first album, they were pretty bland. Great musicians, but a lot their best work was in the service of other artists.
@EvilTheOne12 күн бұрын
@@philipmccarthy6175 There is still a market for 'bland' music. Although I'll admit that a lot of their music may be 'run-of-the-mill', there are some great nuggets on each of their albums. And the fact that they played on thousands of albums, everyone must understand that if their songs sounds like other artists, it's because they've probably played on and/or influenced those artist's albums.

From Songfacts - Scaggs wrote this song with the keyboard player David Paich, who would later form the band Toto and write many of their hits. "Lowdown" was the first song that Scaggs and Paich wrote together; it was Silk Degrees producer Joe Wissert who put them together. In a Songfacts interview with Boz Scaggs, he explained: "We took off for a weekend to this getaway outside of LA where there was a piano and stayed up all night banging around ideas. We hit on 'Lowdown,' and then we brought it back to the band and recorded it. We were just thrilled with that one. That was the first song that we attempted, and it had a magic to it." This was the second single released from Silk Degrees. The first was "It's Over," which charted at a modest #38 in May 1976. Scaggs had little name recognition at the time, and sales were stagnant for the album until an R&B radio station in Cleveland started playing "Lowdown." Other stations followed suit, and it quickly became clear that the song had crossover appeal and hit potential. Scaggs' label, CBS, released it as a single and it climbed to #3 on the Hot 100 in October, spurring sales of the album along the way. The song is about a girl who doesn't appreciate what her man gives her. The "dirty lowdown" is the honest truth - what Scaggs is encouraging this poor sap to face. The word "Lowdown" was popular slang meaning a summary of what's going on for real. Along with keyboard player David Paich, two other future Toto members also played on this track: drummer Jeff Porcaro and bass player David Hungate. The Silk Degrees marked the first time that Scaggs used these studio pros, and it was also his first album produced by Joe Wissert, who was a staff producer at Columbia Records who had previously worked with Earth, Wind & Fire. The crew for the album found just the right sound, a disco-blend that could play in dance clubs and pool halls. Scaggs credits Wissert for giving him and the other musicians plenty of freedom in the studio, resulting in one of the most successful albums of the '70s - Silk Degrees went on to sell over five million copies. This won the Grammy for Best R&B Song of 1976, making Scaggs the first white artist to win the award.

3rd week of September, 1976, Rich stadium. I'd never heard of Boz Scaggs, he was the opening act. The volume was not loud, it was tuneful, and when Boz starting playing Harbor Lights, the entire stadium exhailed and went whisper quiet. I've never experienced anything like that. The day started overcast, 64 degrees. By the time Elton John and Kiki Dee took the stage, it was drizzling and dropping into the 50's. The coldest (teeth chattering) concert I was ever at, one of the best concerts of my memory.
