Enjoyable video, worked on nearly all the locos in this clip at Canton. The area is now a shadow of what it used to be. Freight has declined so much.

Another tremendous film. Severn Tunnel Junction really is a shadow of its former self now. Such a shame that the vast yard was closed and all we have now is the station and empty land surrounding it.

I loved Class 33s. What grand versatile little engines they were with a fair amount of power and speed. Fondly remember them between Waterloo and Salisbury, Bournemouth and Weymouth Town and Quay, Portsmouth and Bath (on Bristol and Cardiff turns) and Swansea to Fishguard. Plus the summer Saturday semi-fasts to Barnstaple. Ventures to Carlisle and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Ah the Cromptons, always a joy to see these. Had to go to Crewe to see them in the 80s, if you were lucky you would see 3. Then in later years workings to North Wales and Manchester also. ( see Flickr David Snape for images)

An HST, a 33, 56 and numerous 37s all before 1 minute. Great days. Thats some downward gradient at 5:10! Those fences at 5:40 were all across BR and were always filthy - I reckon they still had steam engine soot on them from 20 years prior!

Was the 33 with the NSE coaches on a Portsmouth harbour Cardiff service ?

Yes. I used to get the '89' most weekends in term time 1986-1987 to and from Cardiff to Portsmouth - usually 33 hauled, but occasionally would get something different on the Cardiff to Bristol TM leg... once had a 50, and once IIRC a 37, which is the only time I have ever been hauled by a 37, slightly ironic in that I grew up in the Rhondda and 37s were the only locos I would see, apart from 47s on summer mystery trips. I always sat facing the rear leaving Cardiff, as the train reversed at Bristol. Highlights of the trip back then would be Alexandra Dock Junction. Newport Godfrey Road, East Usk Yard, Severn Tunnel Junction ( very much a shadow of its former self), Bristol TM, Westbury (the 59s had just been introduced and those shed-shaped locos were a novelty... if only we knew). Salisbury (50s on the Waterloos and Thumpers in the bay), Southampton Freightliners (all knackered 47s at the time), Fareham (had a stone terminal and would occasionally have a 56), Fratton (my first experience of an EMU depot). For some reason, the 14:00-ish service from Portsmouth would be 47 hauled and not stop at Westbury, so I always tried to bunk off and get that home so I could get home for opening time. Best days of my life 🙂

Yeah still using draughty Mk1s until 1988, when 155s took over.
