Really good stuff - thanks for sharing. I always loved the AC electrics and it was great to see and hear them again. Also the 303's riding on their Gresley bogies, and the 104/101/107 hybrid DMU! Wow, what a great memory. Excellent, thanks again.

As a Glaswegian still living in Glasgow seeing those trains brings back the memories although our Local Train station Corkerhill was still closed in 1986 after fire destroyed the waiting area (it didn't reopend until 1990) and that lovely noise at 14.20 is another nostalgic memory of going through Central Station also i don't know if this is the case but didn't they play music as well in Central station i am positive that one of the tunes was the theme to Van Der Valk i wonder if anyone else remembers this
@spompey2 жыл бұрын
Yes I certainly remember the music, it gave a sense of being in a large station, same as London Waterloo, possibly the same music.It should be reintroduced in my opinion. Many thanks Stephen...Best regards...Mark

Travelled back and forth through Central from the early 80's to mid-late as I was heading to and from school..... spending your lunch money on Casey Jones, yapping to "Angus" iirc his name, the old ticket booths, and the old arrival/departure board..... all that and I was only going one stop to Pollokshields West

These short 4 or 5 coach electric hauled trains were the Glasgow sections of the Birmingham to Edinburgh/Glasgow services which split/joined up at Carstairs junction. The London-Glasgow trains were far longer and didn't stop at Carstairs. The Birmingham trains sometimes ran through to Coventry and were less frequent than the London trains.

14:20 Miss that noise. Dunno why they ever got rid of it.

Interesting. Thanks. :) Funny that the Glasgow-Birmingham train these days is often a diesel Voyager unit. Even though the line is electrified, Virgin don't have enough Pendolinos for this service so they use Voyagers instead, which shows a slight lack of forward thinking when they bought the new trains. The old loco-hauled coaches were much more comfortable (and quieter!) than the cramped Voyager units.

They had the same thing at London Waterloo as well in those days and that has changed too.... I know what you mead....it was atmospheric.......cheers Mark

Not only that but if you set up a tripod and camera on the platform after 9/11, you are usually in for some trouble. Thanks for the memories, nice filming.

Thanks Martin for your kind comment. You are so right in that this country (UK) the officialdum has got ridiculoius and that they use 9/11 as a feeble excuse to place such extreme restrictions on the photographer, not just on the Railway,little common sense prevails and we are sometimes treated as not having any. I can agree with some as I used to work on the Railway but some are just plain ridiculous, saying that though there are the few enthusiasts that contravene all bylaws and spoil it for the rest of us. Just keep your camera at hand and snap away there is still a lot of non restrictive locations out there. Mark

@trebor6200 Thanks for watching the Glasgow Central video, i suspect the men on the track are PW staff repairing the faulty points as i seem to recall there were slight delays to services due to "Essential engineering works" outside the station.

First - great video, really enjoyed seeing how it used to be, being born in 1996 I know little more than what it is today. I've a couple of questions; Was all those loco-hauled trains in this video for Birmingham? Seems like a lot of trains going that way, was any of those local services or were they all long distance? Also, is such extensive use of those loco's now the reason for all the abandoned track just outside central, would that of been where they waited until their next assignments? Not the most technical of questions, but I'm interested nonetheless, I apologize if they seem a bit silly

Thanks Scott, yes a lot of services did run south as far as Birmingham some even via Dumfries on a Sunday.I have not been up to Glasgow lately but there were a few shunt necks for LE movements awaiting their next duty. A lot of locos would have headed to Polmadie depot for fueling etc, but the electrics would stable outside central station. Hope this is of some help to you, and again many thanks for watching......more to come....... Mark

MrGriser Thanks for watching, on a visit to Ayr in 1992 those bongs were still there then. They are really nostalgic I think..........Mark

It seems strange seeing such short InterCity electric trains (a mere 4 coaches behind 87022!) when you consider how overcrowded Virgin Pendolino trains can get these days.
@fatwalletboy25 жыл бұрын
Likely a stock ecs move or more probably a Carstairs joiner/splitter with a portion from/to Edinburgh but in the early 80s the Glasgow portion would have the Buffet and run to 7 maybe 8 coaches.

Punishment- OMG you fruitcake, you've stopped the trains for 5 hours! Everyone make alternative transport arrangements! Twitterstorm! Political condemnation! Jail for 50 years! Life's shite now.

Warning signs set up 24 hours after incident and 10 miles passed incident! Johnny now you have started a Twittery Discussion........many thanks and my best regards....Mark
