When I moved to Scotland in 1985, this was the first station I saw. We had to get a train out to Dalmeny after coming up from Liverpool Lime street. Brings back memories.

Thanks so much for posting your vids here. I was only born in the 90s so its nice to see 80s scotrail on video since i could never experience it myself.

I used to drive these. Was a Secondman/Driver at Haymarket/Waverley between 1980 and 1991. Was a privilege to work in the industry then.

@@thomasshepard6030 Thanks for sharing that Thomas, I have treasured memories of my time on the railway. However by 1991 with the changes leading up to privatisation had had enough and left to go to university. Never looked back.

The 47/7 we see propelling a push pull train, at 5:15, is 47714, Grampian Region. In March 1989, this locomotive was denamed, and became the first 47/7 to leave Scotrail, when she went to Stratford, for overhaul and repaint into Network Southeast livery, being allocated to Old Oak Common. A couple of months later, 47705 "Lothian" went the same way.

This is fascinating to watch. As a frequent visitor to Waverley I wish the trains were as interesting as this! Back then you probably got sick of seeing 27s and 47/DBSO pairings on Edinburgh - Glasgow runs, but they would be a novelty today. Interesting to see that 27 freight movement (ballast maybe?) and the empty car carriers going through?

wow, just caught a shot of the FABLED return empty car transporter from bathgate. used to come up daily early morning sometimes passed craigentinny(sometimes via the sub line) depot where i stood on the footbridge on me summer hols and clocked that and the likes of kings x -edinburgh sleeper(47),the 10.30 edinburgh-plymouth(45,46,47),0700 newcastle/berwick -edinburgh(25,31,40,45,46,47) commuter train...all loco hauled with ecs stock moves(26,27,40,47) and local freight trips(20,26,27,37,40)........there was allways good quality locos on the ? -bathgate train.i saw 45,47 on them....fantastic back in the late 70s

Woah! M'lords! Dreadful! :D Ah, the good-old loco-hauled days at Waverley. Although I am guessing this is post-Deltic (and also possibly post-40). Waverley used to see quite a variety of locos and rolling stock. I could never decide however if I was going to Glasgow if on the out journey I was getting haulage or "pushage"? :-) Amazing to think what we took for granted, including those Class 101 DMUs, are now naught but memories.

The class 150's and 156s are better/safer and more comfortable seating than the mark 1 class 101, 120 and 107 slam door trains. The class 150 and 156's ere ewer and faster and you could not fall off them and break your bones on the concrete platforms before they stopped just before the buffers the way you could the mark 1 slam door trains. People were opening the slam doors when they were still moving at 15 to 20 miles per hour and some crazy youths even purposely jumped out of them "for a laugh" at such a speed risking serious injury. People say "bring back slam door DMU's". Do these people really want to risk their lives or make their quality lives worse by crashing onto the platform from a moving train whether by accident or "just for a bit of fun".

Never realised at the time how different the windows at the end of carriages at the other end of the 47/7''s compared with the rest of the carriages. Only 4 of the normal windows so was there only half that carriage only able to carry passengers compared with the rest of the carriages nearer the loco?

Waverley to Queen Street moving to every 15 minutes ended engine hauled services. There was not the amount of stock to provide 4 x 47/7's every hour Waverley to Queen Street, and even if there was there would have been a lot of empty seats at the off peak. And also running 47/4's with more class 47 engines cascaded in was have been out of the question it was impracticle. How would they have added in another 3 carriages coupling them to 47/4's at peak times the way they couple 2 x class 170 trains together? You couldn't just put any old carriage at the rear of the train as one of the 3 extra carriages. Either it was stick to the half hourly service with the 6 carriages or moving to every 15 minutes with 3 carriage DMU's eventually (6 carriages at peak times). With the 3 carriage DMU's (now EMU's) there was very similar capacity to the 47/7's off peak hours and twice capacity at peak. Passengers demanded double the frequency on the Waverley to Queen Street at the time but there was never going to be double the seating capacity every hour throughout the entire day. The class 170's did not suddenly make it a worse service from Waverley to Queen Street than when the 47/7's were used. The class 170's were not terrible trains.

I missed working the 47/7 Push Pulls. They were replaced by 158s sometimes I worked HSTs on the E&Gs however they were too long for the intermediate stations & Glasgow QSt.
