I used to love the scream of the original hst engines, and loved the smell of the brake pads as they slowed down. We were probably breathing in asbestos like 😂

Penzance is my local station for trips up country to Bristol, Reading and London and Motorail would be a great service I would use even today. So much has changed at the station, way less track and sidings. I grew up during the 80 and 90’s on the western region so this is a real blast from the past - smokey DMU’s, 47’s hauling the mail and HST Valenta’s screaming out of the station 😊

Those 1st gen DMU's were absolutely horrendous for fumes. Imagine a station full of them nowadays. Protestors everywhere.

I've always wondered why, since they had the same engines as very many buses - particularly Leyland Atlanteans - and while they were designed a long time before Euro anything was thought of, they made nothing like the smoke a BR DMU typically made. It must have been down to the grade of fuel BR used

Great video. The motorail facility at Penzance was what inspired me to put Motorail on my station, in my case, platform 6!

Thanks for these videos, loving them. Looking at the formation with a buffet in the middle and taking account of the time of day departure, wondering if the 17:17 departure is the Devon Scot to Glasgow Central and Aberdeen splitiing at Carstairs. All three liveries on the 22:22 HST. Chances of being able or allowed to park your car on the platform nowadays!!!

Great view of the HST firing up. A lot less claggy than some, considering it must have been standing all night

Great video of times gone by. It shows one thing, how privatisation has smartened up and modernised the railway since then but at huge cost to the rail user and taxpayer. I can't understand the attitude of the currently striking unions though other than politics. We must accept, rightly or wrongly that car use will decline rapidly in the next few years, love it or hate it, which means we will need our trains more than ever. It's time for everyone to work together but unless those who are wealthy and in power join in the future could be very grim indeed. The British people deserve a lot better.

Obviously the transition from first to second generation DMU units was underway in the West at the time. The first of those clearly was a refugee from the Midlands given both carriages had the M prefix ahead of the coach number.

Obviously early morning,a cycle and footpath was laid. along the seawall in later years.Back in the late 50s and early 60s we used to walk to the beach atop the wall.
