USA hockey is telling kids it's up to the hitter to avoid a vulnerable player. It shows in the decisions players are making on the ice. Like walking into traffic and counting on the driver to stop for you.

@@jeffd6 I do agree with that. When I played well over 40 years ago I was always taught when you go into the boards always put your elbow up. Now in my days we did not wear helmets so putting your elbow up caused some interesting collisions. You just don't see that anymore.

Players don't need to protect themselves, this is the new NHL that they created. Even watching the juniors play, you loose count on players with their heads down all the time. The new NHL wanted it this way, so sadly we need to deal with inconsistencies and the fact its up to the refs to protect players now vs players having any accountability.

@66BW the knee on knee thing started because players were sticking their leg out if a player side stepped the check. You can find 1,000 comments where a hitting player was completely set in cement and the sidestep was not completed quickly enough. The side step caused the knee on knee, not the hitting player and people start quoting the rules to go after the hitting player.

Boarding is the wrong call, Pasta put himself in that position and Tanev had no time to react to him swinging the numbers toward him, but I understand the offsetting roughing penalties. It was a smart but reckless play by Pasta that paid off with a PP but it was risking an injury for sure.

LOL - its still boarding. I played junior and I could have held up on that hit and I am not in the NHL. Tanev finished the by even extending his forearm through the player into the boards. He could have held up and pined him.

That shouldn’t be a penalty on Tanev when Pastrnak is the one who turned his back towards the hit and put himself in a vulnerable position. Marchand should get 2 for instigating and 2 for roughing.

@@Fish2live2469That’s true to an extent. You’re not supposed to run a defenceless player with no chance of bracing for impact from behind. If that player has plenty of time to brace for an impact he knows is coming and instead chooses to turn his back to the play however, then it becomes another story. Pasta set himself up to get boarded when Tanev was trying to play the body clean; he turned his back to the play when he already knew he was in an area where the body is going to get played more often than not.

Instigating penalty is physically impossible to call here, there was no fight for the penalty to be added. There needs to be 5 mins for fighting called to add the 2. At worst 2 mins for roughing.

This is insane. BOTH penalties they gave to Tanev were nonexistent. Even Marchand is laughing at it with him. He doesn't deserve a boarding, and the rat grabs him from behind and rips him to the ground by the head. They give Tanev a roughing for being roughed, and a completely BS boarding call. WTF, figure out your reffing NHL. Get all the refs in a fucking zoom call once a week until they can all understand the rules, and call games consistently. Just try ANYTHING to remedy this situation instead of ignoring it, or denying it's even a problem that exists. Start docking pay or penalizing refs who mess up, *anything*!
