I remember the single sleeve for the song had like a ghost ship on it in some kind of 3-d thing, and me and my friend thought that it looked so cool that we had to buy it, even though we hadn't heard the song yet. About 12-13 at the time. We weren't disappointed.

It's crazy to see the evolution of Brad lately, he's really starting to "get" the songs instead of just focusing on the lyrics. Now you're complementing each other even better when you can talk about the whole experience, before you were divided by only being able to talk about one half of the song.

I have a theory that this is/was all a "work" and I DEFINITELY got hooked. Ha! They both seem VERY intelligent and I think this has all been calculated. Him "not getting it" which resulted in many comments. That then got more people interested, which produced more comments, etc. Now he shakes it up by suddenly "getting it" which attracts more attention. Also, I think she watches or does research of the songs to come up with her "quirky" descriptions. I feel like a big dope for getting hooked. Good job guys! I could be wrong. Ha!

@@rsw1227To a large degree, I think you're right. Brad plays the "straight man" to Lex's unhinged joy and performance. I think she has a background in musicals and isn't shy about being theatrical and constantly watches herself perform on the other monitor in front of her. I think she has studied up on these artists and has already listened to the songs and has kind of choreographed her performances in advance. However, having said this... Brad and Lex are beautiful people and are helping thousands of people get through their day. Not only are they extremely bright, but, they are very likable. I really appreciate them doing these reactions and all the work and effort involved. I think they're really trying their best and it shows. I personally, could never do what they're doing.

@@Mrdell061 I was skeptical about her rather quickly. She wouldn't listen (or read) the lyrics but somehow would get pretty close to the song's meaning. I completely stopped believing her "quirky" comments when they listened to Twisted Sister. While watching a lyric video (of course) and only hearing about 30 seconds she immediately says, (something like) "This gives me old lady vibes." What about, "We're Not Going To Take It" gives old lady vibes musicly? They seem like they would be fun neighbors. The perfect balance of respecting others privacy but also knowing when to be engaging and "neighborly."

SOOO much excellent American rock in the 70s! British rock rightfully was exalted for it's greatness in the 60s, but somewhat overrated for the 70s (though there was still plenty of great songs then also). But come on... Bob Seger, Boston, Aerosmith, Chicago, The Cars, Springsteen, Journey, Styx, Grand Funk, Tom Petty, Kansas, just a ton of great songs that somehow never equated to national recognition.

@@omicron2018 funny you know this, caught in the act was the last thing they did together before they broke up, most think it was killroy was here, and it is very difficult to find caught in the act, it's almost like it doesn't exist. Tommy and JY have never had a hit since Dennis was kicked out of the band, what a shame, I love Styx, but it isn't the same without Dennis, funny enough without Tommy they were pretty good with Glen Burtnik in his place, edge of the century was really good. Now they mostly play old songs, and the couple of new albums they put out, meh. It was proof that Dennis was/is Styx. I'm not dissing Tommy and JY as musicians, Tommy is one of the best out there, Damn Yankees was absolutely amazing, ShawBlades also, but when it comes to Styx, Dennis is/was the heart and soul.

Epic song from a great album "The Grand Illusion." Some interesting trivia about the band. They had multiple lead vocalists, but the primary lead vocalist was Dennis De Young. He is still married to the same woman he was back in the 1970s. Two of Styx biggest hits are love songs De Young wrote for his wife: 1) Lady, one of Styx' earliest hits and a really interestingly cool sort-of-ballad, sort of banger and 2) Babe - a song he wrote for his wife for her birthday and performed for her with members of the band. The song Babe is a love song to her about being on the road and away from her a lot of the time and how he misses her. The record label liked the song and strongly urged Styx to include it on he album they were recording at the time (circa 1979). So they did, and it became one of their biggest hits. So: Lady and Babe. Nice songs to react to.

This is still my favorite Styx song, I think. I imagine it's telling the story of a young man from perhaps the 17th or 18th Century who goes to sea. He loves the adventure and the discovery of new lands, but sometimes misses the people and life he left behind. One day his ship is stranded out farther than it's ever been before. The crew has lost all hope when what looks to them like angels appear to help them. Our sailor and his companions choose to go with them; only later realizing that the angels are actually fellow explorers from another world who have invited them into a new and more exciting adventure. What an incredible and hopeful composition. Dennis De Young's voice is so expressive, and the vocal harmonies are so triumphant. Great reaction!

Those alien sounds in music were replicating some of the sounds made in the old 1950s science fiction Martian movies. And then Close Encounters Of The Third Kind came out in the 70s, and Star Wars. Plus synthesizers were becoming very popular in the 70s so every band was goofing around with them trying out all the weird sounds they could make.

The song starts with the wistful innocence of a music box, transitions to an escape to the seas, then rises to the skies on a starship - the music follows the lyrics perfectly. I can't wait to see them in concert in 2022!

Thank you for doing the album version of this song. Back in the late 1970's, radio stations that played mostly Top 40 type songs played an edited version of this song and many other songs that exceeded 4 minutes in length. Some of the edited version of "Come Sail Away" were missing the second verse that starts with "I look to the sea...", others edited out the instrumental portion. This was to fit in more songs or more commercials. Some just played versions that were played back at a slightly faster speed (sadly, some radio stations still do this with longer songs). So, thank you for playing the version the band intended people to hear.

@@Hamchunk1968 You're right. Jocks on album oriented rock stations loved "Stairway to Heaven", the live version on "Freebird", and a bunch of other 6 minute plus songs for that very reason. But Top 40 stations didn't do that. One "oldies" station in Los Angeles (KRTH) stills plays a sped up version of "Hotel California". I love the Eagles, but can't stand to hear it when they play it.

My song interpretation is that at first he was solo, grounded and inspired ("I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea",) then inspired by and with others to aim for new heights ("We climbed aboard their starship, we headed for the skies".)

This song is an old school anthem sung in bars, and gatherings all over Chicagoland. Styx being from the area, they was cherished, and bigger than life for the locals. To meet one of them, was a claim to fame, and back in the 70's/80's, a story that got you a hot date. Man I miss the 70's/80's!!

Styx is still out there and touring. Great concert. Go see them if you get a chance. They are doing a few shows in Florida in Feb 2022. Looks like they don't have a co-headliner with them on the Florida dates, but later next year they will be touring with REO Speedwagon. They parted with their original lead singer, Dennis DeYoung, many years go but they have a new guy that sounds a lot like him.

Come Sail away was a pretty big ready hit. Creative? Dude, i mentioned them before but you want to see creative and talent that will blow your mind, Check out Dream Theater. They started around 88 and just came out with an album a few months ago. So it is very safe to do live concert footage by them for the full affect. And they have tons of content on you tube. The skill and creativeness of every member in this band will have you wondering how humans can play like this. And Lexi, their guitar player will leave your head spinning. What did people think of Aliens' in the 70's? you never heard of Star Wars and Star Trek? We were all over Aliens. Alien craze started back in the 40's or even earlier.

Styx went downhill after their album "Equinox". Once again, the reaction circuit falls for the commercialized version of a rock band. It's not just you two, they all do it. My issue with this particular tune is that after an iconic beginning, I have to listen to "Come Sail Away" 172 times.

This was on the radio, FM. Mainstream was more on AM and alternative was on FM at first. And then FM started to get more mainstream too but you would definitely hear this on FM rock stations. I remember because I didn't have this album but I heard this song countless times. Radio was THE THING back then. That's how you heard what songs you liked and then what albums to buy. And then there were the albums which were created as a whole piece and you heard all the songs that weren't on the radio. Whole different era.

Styx would fall into the category of Prog Pop. Progressive Rock, starting in the late 1960s and early seventies, strived to take the relatively simple structure of Rock music and add more accomplished musicianship and more complicated structure and chords, drawing from other forms like classical, jazz, Celtic, exotic cultural music, etc., often employing many types of newly emerging keyboards and synthesizers. Long songs depicting epic journeys, folklore, science fiction, classic literature, etc. were symphony-like pieces with many different movements with varying feels, tempos and key changes. Groups like Styx, Supertramp, Alan Parsons Project, ELO and others took elements of this and did a more commercial radio friendly version of this style. There’s also Prog Folk (Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention, Renaissance), Symphonic Prog (Moody Blues, Genesis, King Crimson), straight Prog Rock (Rush, Kansas) Psychedelic or Space Rock (Pink Floyd, maybe Yes)
