@Freddie Bloggs thing is even in Marty solo album where he plays a million notes a second none of them are wasted and serve a purpose. Kind of like Randy Rhodes back in the day. Lex is all over the drummer’s funk kick patterns and Latin bell patterns (on the ride cymbal) AND ~ THE Halftime DROP (drummers choice again!) of the chorus…she noticed Marty’s pentatonic arpeggios (what he’s a legend for) When she says squeeze the juice.. or milk it….she’s talking about space…the lack of notes (minus half the beat) creates that falling feeling or release after all the build up (in all music but especially metal). Lex is a musical genius.

One thing I noticed about people who are listening to metal for the first time is that they try to "swing" to it like they would do to dance music. Which often leaves them feeling awkward or disconnected because of all the time changes, fast tempos, transitions ect ect. This isn't dance music, this is HEADBANGING music. Instead of weaving your head left to right, try moving your heads up and down with the grooves. Especially with the faster tempos. This might help with connecting with this kind of music.

I love the riff. To my mind the shape of the blues scale is wider at the top than at the bottom, sort of a wedge or tornado shape. The riff is whirly in a playing sense, it feels circular. That always got me about this song. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but Dave Mustaine has been accused of writing music for the musician, which is music that other musicians may find contains in-jokes like a whirly blues riff on a song called tornado of souls. And because of the lore about selling your soul to be able to play blues guitar.🤔🤣

For me, this song is about someone in power (like the President) making the call to end it all; launching ICBMs; mutually assured destruction. "Not for the power, just no more games" referring to world powers and their war games. (S)he's done with the games. The tempo changes throughout represent the changes in heart rate as you make that decision, realize you made that decision, and then the anxiety of knowing the end is near, and finally the "peace" of knowing it'll finally be all over any second.

Being in the eye of the tornado is when Megadeth started getting popular and it gave Dave the strength to end a toxic relationship where he was basically being manipulated and controlled. The more I listen to and study Megadeth, the more amazed I am by them and their eye/ear for what a song should entail, then that song in conjunction with the other songs on the album while not having to be a concept album...the sonic story that that 50 minutes spent in attendence to Megadeth's offering in artistry, creativity, heavy, agressive, abrasive, speed, and song structuring bringing together that punk angst and metal sensibities...perfectly realized on almost every if not every track will not be 50 minutes spent wasted away... And this song, Tornado of Souls, specifically, is peak performance by a peak metal band!!! Metal Gods by Judas Priest might have had Dave Mustaine et al in mind during its creation!!!
