The lyrics were an attack on Jerry Brown, who was State Governor of California. Brown had some pseudo-hippy trappings and one of his nicknames was "Governor Moonbeam". That's why the song refers to kids being made to meditate in school and the suede-denim secret police. Lex was right that the song was referring to how power can change and corrupt people, even politicians who initially appear harmless. Most punks hated the hippies, believing that they were too passive and reluctant to really fight for real change.

My favorite bit of sarcasm was Pull My Strings. DK somehow scored an invite to some sort of music awards show not unlike the Grammys. A bunch of corporate-rock types were in attendance. The song was a lampooning of the industry, that left much of the audience unamused. I’m told that it was the only time they ever played the song, although it is on the Give Me Convenience compilation

It's funny because I've been listening to this song for 40 years and I can recite every word in it, as can everyone I grew up with. So the realization that not everybody can understand Jello Biafra's vocals is amusing. I highly recommend listening to bands like the Dead Kennedys with a lyric sheet, because they have some of the most complex, comedic, and brilliant lyrics of any band, ever. This is a fun video.

Holiday In Cambodia 12" version is the signature song. the best part about them was in the beginning, the 5 piece lineup was doing somethng totally different. and make no mistake they were all as important as Biafra. Boucher. As Jello took over, the albums got weaker.

I often felt that Jello could have reprised CUA according to who was in office at the time. I wrote tribute lyrics years ago during Dubya's administration titled Crawford Texas, Uber Alles that were pretty good, fitting both the tempo of original lyrics, and being politically accurate, and even managed to make them rhyme. I've been working on Trump Tower, Uber Alles, but it doesn't flow as well as Crawford Texas, which has the same syllable count as California, although there's a LOT more material to work with.

I prefer the version on the album. Jerry Brown was the left-leaning governor of California when this came out -- the first of two tenures, a generation apart, and his dad was governor before him --and he was my mayor when I lived in Oakland around the turn of the century. Everyone thinks of San Francisco and Berkeley and Marin County when they think of Bay Area liberalism, but Oakland's further left than everywhere else, and there was a huge movement against Brown because of his "conservative" pro-business leanings. The Dead Kennedys (from SF; Jello Biafra ran for mayor!) parodied the left and the right. Check out "Kill the Poor," "Stealing People's Mail," "Police Truck" and "Drug Me."

If you don't know, the German National Anthem is called Deutschland Uber Alles ( has an umlaut, which I am too lazy to figure out how to reproduce). The original is very militant and was embraced by WWII Germany. The modern version has half of the verses cut out to tone it down.

A very important piece of knowledge helping impart the fascist agenda as viewed through Jello tinted glasses. Good to keep them educated. They'll need to know about the Khmer Rouge if they're going to listen to Holiday in Cambodia. 🍻

Yes true, this part or chorus in the German National Anthem was and still is forbiden to sing after WWll. "Deutschland über alles in der Welt " = "Germany above all in the World"

Cranking these guys from my bedroom window in the mid 80s was a great way for my young-punk self to annoy my conservative neighbors. Still chuckle when I think about those times.

This song is about the authoritarian impulse in American liberalism, but they've adapted the lyrics over the years to target figures on the Left and the Right. Basically government saying that they know what's best for people. California fascism will have cool clothes and healthy living, but it's still fascism.

Ya got that, this is Gov. Gerry Brown and his liberal hippy dogma then reworked in the Reagan Era with anti conservative lyrics and released as We've got a bigger problem now. Jello, Klaus, East Bay, and D.H. are the greatest American punk band. Guantanamo School of Medicine is quite cool too.

System of a Down were influenced by them. On the surface, you might be like "How?". They're different genres. But they both have insane, sometimes high pitched, shaky vocals. They both do creepy hand movements while performing. They both have smart satirical politically charged leftist lyrics.

I totally dig how you young people would take the time to re-visit this. This band and this song changed the youth culture and mind set off the 1980's. In a big way. It was a band that impacted not only generations of youth but united them along racial lines. DK!

Rap and punk rock come from similar street angst. Not surprisingly they blended alot in the late 80's and certainly in the 90's.

I have to agree with the other commentors that lyrics are a must. I've been listening to DK for 40yrs so I get it. Jello can rip through 5 verses and 4 choruses in under a minute. You may even find it hard to read as fast as he sings.

I dont know why they thought Jerry Brown was a Nazi though. He was a progressive politician. He served in California state politics from the 70's until his last term as governor just a few years ago. He ran for president about 4 times.

I saw a speech by Jerry Brown in 1992 in Indiana when he ran for President. Somebody in the audience held up a boom box and played that song, just before the speech started. He acknowledged it and just waved it off like, "Yeah, I get that joke." Pretty cool to get roasted like that and shrug it off. That impressed me to this day.

Jello was absolutely hypnotic on stage. His stage presence was frantic as he delivered his message to the crowd. It was so powerfully performed every time I saw them. Hippie’s wanted to drop out of society, punks wanted to expose and change it.

This song was about the California Governor, Jerry Brown; who was and is very authoritarian. Funny thing is, the DK singer, Jello Biafra, went on to endorse Jerry Brown for Governor, back in 2012. He also won that election; becoming Governor of CA, once again.
