One of the most underrated female vocalists and songwriters of the 90s was the Breeders' lead singer, Kim Deal. Also in this group was another great vocalist, Tonya Donnelly, who led a group called Belly (please do "Feed the Tree", "Slow Dog" or "Gepetto".) As for The Breeders, while "Cannonball" was their signature song, they had some other bangers - "Saints", "Divine Hammer", "Off You", and "Son of Three". This IS 90s alternative, my wheelhouse! Some other great 90s female-led bands you should check out are Lush ("Sweetness and Light"), The Sundays ("Summertime", "Here's Where the Story Ends"), and, of course, Garbage ("Stupid Girl"). Great bands all. And yes, you're right - the singers are twin sisters, Kim and Kelley Deal. The third woman is Josephine Diggs (on that awesome bass) and the drummer is Jim Macpherson. They are from Dayton, Ohio. "Divine Hammer" will give you more of their voices than this one.

Lead vocalist Kim Deal was the bassist and sometimes vocalist of the Boston band the Pixies. The Pixies were the most important band that most people haven't heard of. Their sound influenced the alternative rock sound of the 1990s. Though there have been a few partial reunions and additional recordings, the main era of the Pixies was from about 1986 to 1992. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana often said that the Pixies was his favorite band. You can hear Kim Deal singing on one of their earlier hits "Gigantic" from their first full-length album. Their biggest hit was "Here Comes Your Man" from their 1987 album Doolittle. There are a number of other worthwhile Pixies songs to react to as well. Kim Deal was in another band after the Breeders called the Amps. The title track from their album "Pacer" was a minor radio hit. The Male lead for the Pixies was a guy who was originally named "Charles Thompson" but changed his name to "Black Francis" while he fronted the Pixies. After the Pixies broke up in 1992 or 1993, he embarked on a successful solo career under the name "Frank Black" Another great song to react to would be Frank Black's first radio hit "Los Angeles." Anyway, the Pixies are a gateway down the rabbit hole of 1990s alternative rock as they influenced so many other bands.

The Breeders actually started as a side project in the late 80s for 2 musicians from Boston whose other bands were at the top of their game at that point: Singer/ guitarist Kim Deal (who was the bassist/ sometime singer in The Pixies), and Tanya Donnelly (who was the guitarist/ sometime vocalist in Throwing Muses), rounded out by bass player/ singer Josephine Wiggs (from UK indie-pop band Perfect Disaster) and drummer Britt Walford. After this line-up released their first album ("The Pod") in 1990, Walford and Donnelly left (Walford joined Louisville noise-rockers Slint; Donnelly fronted her own band Belly, whose "Feed The Tree" would be an excellent Female Friday selection). The Breeders filled these 2 vacancies with a much more fluid drummer (Jim MacPherson), and Kim's twin sister Kelley on vocals and guitar, which gave the band (as one critic put it) "plenty of Wonder Twin Starpower". And it did- their second album (1993's "Last Splash", from which "Cannonball" was released as a single) remains one of the most listener-friendly, and at the same time one of the weirdest, pop/ rock albums of the 90s. Excellent reaction, as always.

Not only do the The Breeders have a members connection back to the Pixies, they also have a connection back to another amazing and overlooked U.S. band…Slint. You need to hear their songs ‘Good Morning Captain’ and ‘Washer’ from their 1991 album ‘Spiderland’….for the connection to the Breeders? Well, the Breeders song you just reviewed is the second incarnation of the band. In the first, it was Kim Deal singing, Her sister Kelly was not there. Tanya Donnelly from the ‘Throwing Muses’ played guitar, with ‘Shannon Daughton’ on drums! But Shannon was not a girl… it was a pseudonym used by male drummer, Britt Walford. He was drummer and founding member of Slint. Their 1991 albums ‘Spiderland’ is one of those albums to hear before you die! They were such an influential band, and were the band that were responsible the ‘Post Rock’ genre. So yes check out The Pixies, but please check Out Slint!

So great pick! Love The Breeders. They released an album called "All Nerve" in 2018. You should try "Wait in the Car" from this album - It's a great song. A big hello from Brazil here!

Sisters Kim and Kelly Deal...lawd have mercy!! Kim Deal was one of my celebrity crushes when I was in my 20's back in the 90's. She was also the bass player in another band you should give a listen to, the Pixies.

I fucking love Kim Deal. My favorite female artist of all time. It was a sad day when she left the Pixies.....they were never the same.

My favorite '90s all-female band has to be Luscious Jackson. So hard to describe their sound, but I just love it. Some great songs to get you started include Here, Take A Ride, Under Your Skin, Mood Swing, Naked Eye, Electric, Ladyfingers and so many more. I hope you'll explore their sound on Female Friday!🌞

Oh yay, you reacted to Cannonball! Some other fun female alternative and grunge songs to check out: "Doll Parts" by Hole, "Feed the Tree" by Belly, "These Are Days" by 10000 Maniacs, "Trigger Happy Jack" by Poe, "Army of Me" by Bjork, and "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star... There are a lot more, but this is a good start ;)

My friend in high school bought a bass guitar just to play this song. This song was HUGE in my 18 year old head. ❤ Seattle was so fun back then

All 5 of Pixies original albums kept me company through high school, that's Kim Deal's (bass, vocals, silly face at 3:54 ) original band and for me at the time was on level with The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc. For them, check Where is my Mind, Bird Dream of Olympus Mons, Dig For Fire... there are maybe 40 or 50 original songs, all great tracks with a garage band-feel (and often very strange lyrically and compositionally). Another female grunge band: "L7" - check the song Pretend We're Dead. OH Shit! and you may wanna see the nastier and more punk side of the gender with "Cycle Sluts From Hell - I Wish You Were a Beer," then for 1980's glam metal there's Vixen, which I always incorrectly thought was one of Lita Ford's bands. She started The Runaways with Joan Jett and later played with Ozzy (you may have reacted to Close My Eyes Forever).

I saw someone in the comments mention Siouxsee and the Banshees. I second that for a Female Friday! Start with Kiss Them for Me

One of my favorites. Their new work is amazing too. And you should definitely check out The Pixies which Kim Deal was in as well. They were a huge influence on Nirvana and other bands that created the 90s alternative sound.
