Debbie Harry said in an interview about how they got their name. She said she would walk by construction workers in NYC when they would always yell, “HEY, BLONDIE!” to her. She thought, “That’s a great name for our band!” She told her boyfriend and band mates….the rest is history.

Blondie was a great new wave punk band that ranged in multiple musical styles, genres. '70s and '80s. Very genre fluid. Similar to Talking Heads. They both came out of the NYC punk scene.. CBGB club. So many other songs/videos to suggest. I'd say "Atomic" should be next, yall will love that song/video! Debbie has an east coast, NY/NJ accent and is very cool in her interviews. She grew up in New Jersey/New York.

I wouldn't go so far to say that Blondie was a "New Wave" Punk Band at all. In those days American Punk Rock music had lots of instrumental and most of all vocal melody, even the Ramones display melody through vocals and actual singing! They were some of the 1st pioneers of American Punk music....with time the music got faster and more confrontational through lyrical context as well as instrumental aggressiveness to suit the lyrics but to say that Blondie is a "New Wave Punk Band".....no such thing.....Blondie amongst other bands like The Clash, The Stooges and so on of the time are the real deal....PUNK ROCK!
@joesmith8725

New wave /post punk/dance-punk is one of many offshoots of punk rock. Just not as raw as punk. Little more rhythmic on the bass guitar, beats/drums, more danceable.

Yeah, I think the closest Blondie ever got to punk was their earliest stuff like "X Offender" and "Rip Her to Shreds", but there was always something else lurking in there, which is how we got songs like "In the Flesh" and "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear."

Glad to see the CBGB reference!!! It was a great club at 315 Bowery, and always amuses me it stood for Country Bluegrass and Blues when it became a hard-core punk club. The CBGB film is really good, with Alan Rickman As Hilly, and Taylor Hawkins (RIP) as Iggy Pop !!

Don't worry guys. A lot of us back in the '80s (I was a kid) thought they were called Blondie because of Debbie Harry being blonde 😆. They were such a cool band even our parents liked them. Very cutting edge. Helped usher in new wave, post-punk into mainstream from the late '70s into the '80s. Bands like The Cars, Devo, Talking Heads, B-52s, Siouxsee and the Banshees, U2, Berlin, Joy Division/New Order, Missing Persons, Romeo Void, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Cure, Adam and the Ants, Psychedilic Furs, The Police, The Pretenders, The Go-Gos, Men at Work, and a whole bunch more. 🎸 They helped paved the way for modern post-punk, dance-rock groups (some with synthesizers too) like Bloc Party, Interpol, The Killers, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, MGMT, Santigold, Empire of the Sun, and others. Check out more of all of these past and current bands. Blondie is legendary!

You should check out her filmography sometime, and because I'm a weirdo I'll recommend the proverbial deep end and suggest you start with "Videodrome" (1983). You still think of her as Blondie? It's based on an interesting anecdote about her, yes, but Blondie is the name of the band. Her name is Debbie Harry (although her birth name is AngelaTrimble. She was renamed Deborah Ann Harry by her adoptive parents at barely three months old). And yes, she's really cool. She was already in her thirties when the band started, after having sung in other bands and done other things ( some very interesting)... she is now 76 years old. In fact, she's not a natural blonde, she bleached it and the band, which was originally called Angel and the Snake, changed its name to Blondie because she got catcalls about her new hair. There's more, but it's a long story. Look them up, you can learn a lot from them.

Blondie is a new wave punk legend Very genre fluid. That meshes, mixes well with other genres. Well loved and respected band. Rock n Roll Hall of Famers. Very popular, you can tell also by the tons of views, comments yall getting in a short period of times. "Rapture" (47K views in 5 days) and "One Way or Another" (47K views in 6 days) are still up right now. Sadly the videos that are blocked now, "Call Me" (67K views in 10 days) and "Heart of Glass" (already 109K views in only 12 days!!.........on pace to be the most viewed video ever on your channel at that rate. lol. We all hope that these videos can be salvaged, saved.

Ex Playboy bunny who worked in the Playboy Club in NYC. They were pretty big in the day. Had what is considered the first rap song called Rapture. This was their first hit and the singers name is Debra Harry. Their biggest hit was probably "Call ME." From the American Gigilo sound track. Richard Gere's break out movie. One of the many groups that came out of the legendary music club, CBGB's in the Bowery in lower Manhattan. Talking Heads. Ramones. Among many others.

She didn't have the first rap song, not by a long shot, but blondie is credited for entering the first rap song into the mainstream.

Loved Blondie! So original. Brilliant lyrics, musical content, and Debbie Harry was so unique. Check out 'Dreaming' and you will see what a great drummer Clem Burke was.

Debbie Harry was a trailblazer, definitely quirky, and very famous in the late 70s. It seemed like everyone had a Blondie record, t-shirt, and/or poster.

You should watch the documentary on TV Party, which was a cable TV show in New York city in the late '70s and early '80s. Chris Stein, one of the the guitar players for Blondie and Debbie Harry's husband, was one of the producers of the show, and he and Debbie were on it all the time. There are some interview clips with her in the documentary. I think it's on KZbin.

Loved hearing this again for the first time in ages. What a great band Now check out their brilliant the tide is high but before you do listen to the wonderful original reggae version by the Paragons. They are both equally good in their own way and should be heard much more often

The name of the band comes from a catcall Debbie Harry experienced when the band was first starting out. Some schlubs saw her and yelled, "Hey Blondie, give us a screw!"

Yes. Blondie is the band, but Deborah Harry is the star. She really put this band on the map in the late 1970's. Great music, and really fun and intertaining reaction. Love it.

Post-Punk, which Blondie is an example of, was basically music from people who were so Punk they didn't even have to play Punk Rock anymore. It intersects a lot with New Wave. Some other examples of Post-Punk bands are Joy Division, Gang of Four, and Talking Heads, along with many others. (Commenters, reply with some more if you like.)

Yes! Post-punk, new wave . Played better instruments, technique more danceable form with steady rhythmic bass guitars and sometimes with synthesizers. Great suggestions, BTW and add Sioxsee and the Banshees, Devo, New Order (Joy Division), Elvis Costello and the Attractions, etc and modern bands like Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric, Bloc Party, Santigold, etc as well!
