Yeah, except for that disco song that comes on after Don't Speak. I've tried to evolve, but I still hate it and skip it every time. This is the only song that puts The Cranberries slightly over the top for me than No Doubt. There isn't a single Cranberries song I would skip over hating it. I still love them as my two favorite bands, but please erase that disco crap, guys!

This song was HUUUGE when it came out in 1995 (jeeez, 26 years!). It's still played frequently on radio stations here in the UK. In the US I beleive it broke the record for most consecutive weeks at #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay when it came out, and is still in 3rd place - beaten only in 1998 (Goo Goo Dolls) and 2020 (The Weeknd). Tragic Kingdom was an absolutely fantastic album from a band that had a very limited peak period. I recommend checking out Spiderwebs and Sunday Morning. For Gwen's solo stuff, I don't care much for it at all but 'What You Waiting For?' was a banger.

Ska (/skɑː/; Jamaican: [skjæ]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. I'm genuinely jealous. Not that anyone knows who he is but a friend became a dj in high school, Rodi Styles is his old Dj name now it's Somna. Watched this dude go from playing dingy community centers to massive raves to living in England winning EDM awards. Apparently in the trance / hardstyle community he's HUGE. I only tell this story because it's awesome watching a band or musician grow

This was definitely a hit as mentioned in other comments, I loved No Doubt from beginning to end! Please, please, also try another one of their first, Sunday Morning, and then their last hit song, It's My Life. The video for the last song is symbolic of them splitting as well, very great song and video. I will also add, it is funny for us women to know Gwen did date one of the band members and as she sings about their break up and hurt, he's playing the music lol

🤯🤯🤯 Ok, “ska,” pronounced Sk-ah. Ska is a musical genre born out of Jamaica, (out of Ska comes Reggae & Rocksteady.) Ska/Reggae travels from Jamaica to the UK & the US with immigrants, it catches on mostly with the non-racist punks and the second-wave of ska is born into existence-Madness, The Specials, etc. No Doubt was originally a ska band that was a part of ska’s Third Wave-Against All Authority, Catch 22, Link 80, Mustard Plug, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Save Ferris, etc.-Several members departed before the band became the four-piece you just heard. Tragic Kingdom, (the album featuring the hit single you just heard is the band’s third album.) Yeah, this song was EXTREMELY popular, but about ten years before Gwen Stefani’s solo album featuring, “Hollaback Girl.” I would’ve recommended “Spiderwebs,” or the obvious track off this album, “Just A Girl.” “Don’t Speak,” kinda of the first big swing away from their more Ska/OC roots. After Tragic Kingdom the band blasts off into pop-stardom. With that said, the whole album is phenomenal. If ya wanna checkout these guys with Davey Havock, (AFI/Blaqk Audio/XTRMST,) instead of Gwen Stefani, it’s a band called Dreamcar.

No Doubt was originally a ska band! ( you said it right 1st time). Their first hit "I'm Just a Girl" was probably the best example of their ska style, just as far as actual hits go ( unless I'm forgetting something!) But generally they are fun and so is she, but like any good performer, they are multifaceted and also evolved with time just like we all do. I actually saw them live at Jones Beach, NY. They / Gwen has SO MUCH ENERGY, it was fun as hell! And she CAN SING LIVE!!!!!

Ugh, you'd hear some interesting stuff on No Doubt 'Tragic Kingdom. It's just a fantastic album. It was like the the first cd I ever bought. The entire band just kills it, great front to back, and it's Gwen in her prime roots before she went solo (which is also great) I'd suggest 'Spiderwebs', 'Different People', or 'Sunday Morning'. 'Don't Speak' is a soft jam. The rest of their stuff is generally faster ska style.

No Doubt were huge in the 90’s. I never got into Gwen as a solo artist, her sound and style in the early 2000’s was more mainstream pop. But for the better part of the 90’s she fronted one of the best bands of the decade and was fierce… “Just A Girl” “It’s My Life” “Spiderwebs” “Hella Good” “Ex Girlfriend” are all🔥 I know I’m not alone in hoping that they would get back together for one more album & tour. I’d love to take my Gen Z kids to a No Doubt show.

Would love to hear "Just a Girl," and "Excuse me Mister" off the same album. Then it would be awesome to hear you explore the ska genre a little more. Sublime would be a good offshoot, then maybe some Operation Ivy? Then, that's a pretty good lead into some reggae? A little Bob Marley, maybe "Concrete Jungle?" Sounds like a plan Stan.

OK I'm old as hell because I always think of Don't Speak as a "later" No Doubt song. It doesn't sound like most of their music. In fact that's what the song was about. The simplest and oldest description of "ska" (pronounced like skah or scoff without the fs) is "Punk with a trumpet" No Doubt's creator, Gwen Stefani's brother, was in one of the first ska bands, and time has borne the genre out to be a niche within heavy SoCal influenced music, the swimming pool of bands like Sublime, Long Beach Dub All Stars, The Offspring, Smashmouth, etc. I can tell that 90s SoCal like I can tell a New York hip hop artist after about 10 seconds. You definitely have to listen to a couple of their other hits! Suggestions: Just A Girl, Spiderwebs, It's My Life, and Underneath It All a newer but still great song. Also none of their music videos are distracting, would recommend.

The story behind the song is very interesting. Gwen's older brother and a former high school classmate were getting together to make music when they realized they needed someone to sing, which is when Gwen joined them. She contributed most of the lyrics, that's how NO DOUBT was born, with a very ska and reggue style. The logical thing happened, Gwen started going out with her older brother's friend, they dated for some time, gwen's brother eventually left the band, he felt a little uncomfortable seeing their demonstrations of love at rehearsals, concerts, etc etc. Gwen began to gain a lot of popularity to the point that the record company asked her to make a solo album, when her colleagues, knowing it, annoyed, decided to absolve the band. It was there that Gwen wrote that song dedicated to her partners and especially to her boyfriend. In the end they accepted her artistic breakthrough and supported her by stepping aside, letting her shine on her own.

This was one of the really big tunes to come to the UK and compete with the Brit-Pop era. They were sadly never around when I had money to go see bands, but would have loved to see her live... am pretty sure Gwen has the same capacity and capability as the greats so it's shame to have never been able to see her. Brings back a load of great memories from Brit-Pop which music post-1998 fails to match.

Not throwing shade, just trying to figure out how you would place No Doubt into the punk genre and what other Punk band would you compare them too?
