The human experience of just making it through the day, wanting the world to be better, and realizing all the contradictions in yourself and in others. And being basically okay with them. Or at least, having faith that it's all gonna work out. That last part is trickier some days than others.

I remember it was presented like some kind of emerging indie artist album, in reality it was highly produced with the music industry behind it, there was even Flea playing the bass.

@@punishedf Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers) also played lead guitar on 1-2 tracks. It doesn't change that she wrote or co-wrote most of the songs & that there wasn't a "filler" track on the album.

It's cool seeing Brad getting smitten with the 90's female artists that us dudes did back in the day. Was lucky enough to get tix from the radio station I worked with back then to see her at Taste of Chicago in Grant Park back in '95 for this tour. First time I saw Taylor Hawkins play live, as well. Voice, tone, intonation, pitch, that unique "twang" at the end of a vowel, lyrics, storytelling.....this girl was (and still is) mezmerizing. One of a kind! And this comes from a metalhead that does not deviate very often from the heavy kind of music.

Her song "Thank You" is, for me, the best Alanis song there is.... Early in her career, before this album, she was extremely pop-y... like, very 'radio-pop' driven tunes. Then a few years passed, and she came onto the scene with this album and had re-invented her image . This was the album that rocketed her into stardom, and with further albums, she gets even more deep and introspective, as her songs really tell the story of the world and events around her that shaped her into who she became. I never tire of her music.

An amazing singer/person. To answer Lex's question "is she even human?", well... you might have an answer to that by watching the movie "Dogma" 😉 Should go for "All I Really Want"... you might get cramps by keepin' on smiling. And talking about smile, Brad... Brad! Your smile reminds me that even actuaries can be funny 😄 Keep up the good work guys, you are truly amazing!!

"Dogma"! One of my favorite movies of all time. Yes, Alanis is a goddess. I don't even care much for Jay & Silent Bob movies, but "Dogma" has such great lines and very important messages, especially for today: " People kill for a belief! People die for a belief! [Instead,] why can't people just say 'I have an IDEA'?" There'd certainly be less wars.

It's not a difficult harmonica part, but I had fun teaching my baby sister how to play it for this song. She was like 12 or 13 when this album came out. I am not a big Alanis fan, but my sister had posters hung in her bedroom, so I sucked it up and taught her when she asked.

Check out Cristina Scabbia of Italy's gothic metal band "Lacuna Coil". Check out "Our Truth" to start. Kind of like Italy's Amy Lee. Stuff from their earlier albums &EPs (1998-2006) are my favs by far. SO many good songs. And the music video from their "Swamped" song is great, especially when she smears her lipstick. Cristina's voice is ETHERIAL! (& also their original band name).

If you want to know what Alanis was like before her music career check out the sketch comedy show for kids from the 80's You Cant Do That on Television, she was an actress on the show and that is where Nickelodeans Green Slime came from. Yall should check out Natalie Merchant, the song Wonder or Carnival. Before her solo career she was part of the band 10,000 Maniacs.
