One of my fondest CFNY memories was taking Martin Streek Christmas dinner one year when the studios were in Brampton. (You'll know of whom I speak if you were a regular listener during their peak years.) He was working a holiday shift all by his lonesome, and my friend and I drove out there from Hamilton and took him a heaped plate of Xmas fare lovingly prepared by my mom. He was tickled pink. I can still remember his huge smile when he dug in to the food. (After microwaving it, of course.) A gentler, kinder soul I've never met. Years later, I would create a character based on Martin for a screenplay.

@@dstrawsb absolutely correct. At this point in their career, they were starting to see real devotion from their ever increasing fan base, but still couldnt get a tune played on "mainstream" radio. LUV it, Brad is reading the lyrics and indulging his mind🤔, LEX is just rock'n out to the vibe!🥰. Interesting Hiway analogy. I use a biking analogy for music choices. On the road, rythm music, same beat, for a consistent pedal cadence. Mountain biking on killer trails, ups/downs/lefts/rights, is pretty much always RUSH, prog, or complex rock!☮

I think my favorite parts of this song are the reggae bridge and the old school rock and roll piano at the very end. It's embedded in the mix but it adds that extra layer that just makes the finale perfect! Love your reactions. So fun to see people react to a Rush song for the first time.

You know I’ve listened to this song so many times and heard the piano but it never registered to me as such if that makes sense. It doesn’t seem like it should fit, yet it does perfectly! Thanks for pointing it out!

You guys together are like a song. Brad is the lyrics and Lex is the music. It's even visible as you react with Brad thoughtfully pondering the meaning of the words and Lex vibing the energy of the sound.

It's a song dedicated to a Brampton radio station CFNY who really helped Rush by playing all their music all the time. They started the radio station in an old house and we would knock on the radio room window on Halloween and the DJ would hand out candy.

The lyrics during the reggae break reference Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence": "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls, and whispered in the sounds of silence."

In all my years listening to RUSH I've come to know them as the "Tchaikovsky of Classic Rock" . . .

I never thought about how fun the song is... just how awesome it is musically. Thanks Lex! Brad, it's supppsed to evoke switching radio channels on your road trip.

It's a musical journey down the radio dial. The section just before the reggae drop is supposed mimic rolling the old radio dial until you hear a song you like. The song is also a slam to the music industry when you have to comprise your music to reach a broader audience. Funny thing is, Rush didn't bend to "the man". Matter of fact, they were almost dropped by their music company, but the album (2112) was a huge hit. To give credit to their record company they decided that they just didn't get it, and let Rush do their own thing.........As long as it sells. Rush is definitely a band that you have to listen to a few times to kinda figure out where they're going with the music and lyrics, but it's also why their music never gets old. Enjoyed the reaction! Take care ✌

This classic transcends backgrounds and generations. Rush rocks! Many of us would highly recommend you check out the big hit "Subdivisions", which has timeless lyrics that EVERYone can relate to. So powerful in lyric and music. You guys are gonna have a LOT of fun with this band as you explore their goods. You have no idea!

You should listen to Jane's Addiction "Ocean Size". They are a highly influential band that paved the way for grunge music, only they were creating their best works in the mid to late '80s. They were recognized for putting the nail in the coffin for '80s hair metal.

Rush can write a song about anything... and often do. A lot of people get a nostalgic feeling from Rush. I think it's in their sound. Check out YYZ (Live in Rio). Such a vibe! Funny note, Lost in Vegas also compared it to Reading Rainbow.

“The Spirit of Radio” was released in 1980, three years before Reading Rainbow aired on TV. I suppose the comparison is a generational response. 🤣
