One of my fondest CFNY memories was taking Martin Streek Christmas dinner one year when the studios were in Brampton. (You'll know of whom I speak if you were a regular listener during their peak years.) He was working a holiday shift all by his lonesome, and my friend and I drove out there from Hamilton and took him a heaped plate of Xmas fare lovingly prepared by my mom. He was tickled pink. I can still remember his huge smile when he dug in to the food. (After microwaving it, of course.) A gentler, kinder soul I've never met. Years later, I would create a character based on Martin for a screenplay.

@@pssthpok well could be, my comment was a knee jerk reaction. I think I said that because Rush was coming off of 2112, which was so anti radio establishment, Rush though that was the last album, record company wanted some 3 minute hits, so they gave them 2112, only after that success did they decide to write shorter songs, and Spirit was a bit of a slap in the face to the sale of music.
@Kenjanz
@Kenjanz 3 жыл бұрын
@@dstrawsb absolutely correct. At this point in their career, they were starting to see real devotion from their ever increasing fan base, but still couldnt get a tune played on "mainstream" radio. They were acknowledging, at the same time, that radio is what makes us all feel good and we enjoy listening to, but that what we hear is guarded by salesmen and executives...whose motives may be lees than pure interest in music. It is amazing to me how many people hear this tune and miss that very clear point in the lyrics.

Brad & Lex make a perfect pair. Brad is, at heart, logical and analytical. He's smart but reserved and focuses more on the lyrics and the meaning of the song. Lex has personality and charisma to burn and just lets the music get into her soul and take her on a joyous emotional ride! It's not that Brad doesn't hear and enjoy the music or that Lex isn't smart enough to understand what the song is about. (She certainly is.) Lex, you are the soul embodiment of the flow of the sound, tickling the very essence of your being. I laugh and feel your joy, especially for the appreciation of a band that myself and millions of others have felt for years. Watching your reaction is a gift of renewal and revelation, making it feel fresh again. Brad, you are the studious one who not only apprciates the music, but also moved by the message behind the words. Rush is a very thought provoking group whose primary writer and lyricist is the extraordinary drummer Neil Peart. Alex & Geddy, extraordinary themselves, are forever grateful for the time shared as Rush, and will forever miss their bandmate and friend Neil. Thank you Brad and Lex for giving time and appreciation to one of the best, if not the best, progressive rock bands ever.

Back in the day, CFNY-FM, in recent years "The Edge"- " The Spirit of Radio"… out of Brampton, Ontario on the outskirts of Toronto. Love how you each are getting it on your own terms, your own lens, ear-goggles 😂 Probably the first song to finally win me over. Cheers to you, Brad and Lex!! That's contagious, girl. Fun the way you absorb and reproduce those riffs. ✌😘🎶💞

Glad to find someone mention this. I used to listen to CFNY before it moved to Toronto. A very progressive radio station that played Rush when Rush had trouble finding radio stations that would play their music.

102.1, this was my go to back in the late 70's/early 80's, such a great station. You had to be pretty close because the wattage of the station wasn't that high. Heard so many great bands that I probably wouldn't have heard on that station. Eclectic doesn't even cover what you would hear on it, they didn't have a "format", no corporate influence. This was Rush's tribute to it.

LUV it, Brad is reading the lyrics and indulging his mind🤔, LEX is just rock'n out to the vibe!🥰. Interesting Hiway analogy. I use a biking analogy for music choices. On the road, rythm music, same beat, for a consistent pedal cadence. Mountain biking on killer trails, ups/downs/lefts/rights, is pretty much always RUSH, prog, or complex rock!☮

I think my favorite parts of this song are the reggae bridge and the old school rock and roll piano at the very end. It's embedded in the mix but it adds that extra layer that just makes the finale perfect! Love your reactions. So fun to see people react to a Rush song for the first time.

It's a song dedicated to a Brampton radio station CFNY who really helped Rush by playing all their music all the time. They started the radio station in an old house and we would knock on the radio room window on Halloween and the DJ would hand out candy.

It's a musical journey down the radio dial. The section just before the reggae drop is supposed mimic rolling the old radio dial until you hear a song you like. The song is also a slam to the music industry when you have to comprise your music to reach a broader audience. Funny thing is, Rush didn't bend to "the man". Matter of fact, they were almost dropped by their music company, but the album (2112) was a huge hit. To give credit to their record company they decided that they just didn't get it, and let Rush do their own thing.........As long as it sells. Rush is definitely a band that you have to listen to a few times to kinda figure out where they're going with the music and lyrics, but it's also why their music never gets old. Enjoyed the reaction! Take care ✌
