To understand this song you need to understand the Mark Twain character it was based on. Tom Sawyer was someone who understood human nature very well and was morally ambiguous enough that he had no qualms taking advantage of people when he applied that knowledge. One of the more famous scenes from the book was when Tom had to paint a fence as punishment assigned from his aunt, he managed to convince his friends that painting the fence was a privilege and in fact, he was the only one skilled enough to do it. Soon his friends were paying him for the opportunity to prove that they also had enough skill to be able to paint the fence and Tom got off without getting punished since his friends did all the work. This song talks about a modern-day version of a person like that. Someone who always is running game and has an angle on everything.

All absolutely stellar musicians and the drummer, Neil Peart (The Professor) writes nearly all the extremely eloquent lyrics and is widely considered to be the best rock drummer (along with John Bonham) of the entire genre. Spirit of Radio or La Villa Strangiato should be next. Cheers!

Of the 100, name me 5 that have had the same effect that Niel P. had globally, in spawning millions of drummers?? I too (was) a drummer and understand the craft very, very well, But there were none other than perhaps Bonham that had that infectious element to them that created a legion of followers and students. All the rest may be equal or better in your eyes, but it my mind, comes down to whether they were able to “bring it” to world as he did - and very few others have- (Bonham, Copeland, Collaiauta, Smith) . That said, Neil reigned supreme in his (compositional) musicality, drive and attack.. RIP - GOAT….
