Hemingway wrote the book with the battle of Segovia in his mind. Ofensiva de la granja, 30 may / 4 june 1937. My grandfather fought there, in La Granja de San Ildefonso. At 18 years old. He lost his brother in the war, soldier too. They knew perfectly why they were fighting. I love this song but the part "for a hill men would kill, why they do not know. Stiffened wounds test their prides", was totally wrong. In that war everyone knew what they were fighting for.

I've BEEN waiting for you guys to get on this one! The intro riff was played on a bass guitar with the use of a wah pedal - the term "lead bass" was attributed to Cliff Burton, Metallica's bassist at the time who passed away after the release of the Master of Puppets album. God rest his soul... When I discovered this fact it inspired me to pick up the bass myself. (: And I 100% understand why the "beat" of Bells appeals so much to Brad. If you really wanna turn your man into a Metallica lover, Lex, I recommend doing a reaction to Sad But True - I really think Brad would be able to appreciate that one. It's *heavy*, but also has the groovy beat he loves to hear. You guys are awesome. Rock on!

Just a random fact for you the "bell" in the song isnt actually a bell, they wanted a bell ringing in the song, the studio wanted them to use a pre programmed bell tone and they didnt like them... @@brennanthabault9449 per an interview with producer Flemming Rasmussen... Heres a snippet of the interview... The Tolling Bell Isn’t a Bell At All… Y’know that iconic bell sound at the beginning? It isn’t actually a bell. That’s drummer Lars Ulrich thwacking an anvil at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen. As producer Flemming Rasmussen recalled: “We had an anvil in the studio, and Lars had to bang that; it could’ve been that or from a record of sound effects. But there was a really heavy, cast-iron anvil and a metal bar, and we stuck them in an all-concrete room. He’d just go wang.”

If you like “orchestral” music, listen to the live performance of “No Leaf Clover” from Metallica’s 1999 S&M concert.

i actually went down to the comments to suggest this very song. i think Brad would like "No Leaf Clover" since it has a strong consistent base line beat similar to "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

It's literally about the book by the same name. Direct connection. The "Bell" tolling sound was made using a hammer on anvil clang. The song feature Bass guitarist Cliff Burton (RIP) at the intro. That's not the usual style to use a lead guitar for solos, but that was all done by the masterful bass guitarist. That's how talented a bassist he was. This is my fav number 1 song by Metallica. When I was growing up I wanted a big stereo set for my house, but my mother was against rock music and didn't like loud music, so I never got to have anything but a small boombox and a walkman in my room. When I moved out one of the first splurges I made was a big stereo (Technics brand) from The Good Guys store - i cranked it up and For Whom the Bell Tolls was the first song I ever played on it - at stupid loud volume i might add. That was 1994. I still have those same speakers in my living room - though the components have all been upgraded several times over the years.

Same! A Metallica concert was being promoted on whatever radio station I was listening to back in the 80s and they used a snippet of the chorus from this song and I was instantly like, “WHAT?” They soon became my favorite band of all time. And then the black album came out.

You guys are always so fun to watch! Metallica was so far ahead of their time, the then "metal" radio station (KNAC), wouldn't play them; but the fans won out. They became iconic. This is a song based on a book by the great Ernest Hemingway (with the same title). I'm metal-nerding out with my "For Whom the Bell Tolls" shirt on right now. I was lucky enough to see them at a small venue in LA before they became. titans. They set-up tables in the parking-lot outside and stayed to meet-&-greet all the fans until we were all gone.

They created the heavy metal recipe as they went, garage days/showed talents. killem/young man basics, masters/ usually experimental for most bands but for them it worked 100% and showed the musical chops. All thier toons have a topic or message. They are the spoon, they are the metal!

I think the ending is like the smoky battlefields and soldiers falling or running in slow motion to their doom and disappearing into the smoke. That thump thump beat and wailing guitars is like the pointlessness of the battle and basically the opening to the void of death.
