This is my favorite Zeppelin song and it makes me sad that most people have never even heard of it. This song is the definition of epic. The sound in this song takes you on a journey and the lyrics are so reflective. Another thing that makes this great is that there are multiple ways to interpret what it means. All these things give the song such a pure Zeppelin vibe.

Because this was my big brothers Tommmy favorite Zep song and my brother has been in Heaven for 10 years this year and it seems like it was just yesterday! RIP Big Brother! I love ya Tom! This song isnt the jamming song that some Zep fans are used too but its not all about how loud the music is , its the words in the song that make the song just as much as the music! Thanks. Keep up the Good Work guys!

This has always been up in my top 5 Led Zeppelin songs since I first heard it at 12, it’s towards the end of the 4th side of the Double LP “Physical Graffiti” (My favorite Led Zep release) which is absolutely loaded with great songs, but then this one caught me off guard towards the end and always really moved me with its dreamy lingering guitar and short bursts of energy. This is definitely one of those refreshing Led Zep “deep tracks” that was never played in heavy rotation like their many “hits” that would always get radio airplay. Rounding out my Top 5 Led Zep, in no particular order would also include: “Achillies Last Stand”, “In My Time of Dying”, “Out On The Tiles”, and “How Many More Times?”

Jimmy Page had originally intended the song to be an instrumental piece; he recorded around 14 guitar tracks to overdub the harmony section.[5] Robert Plant later added lyrics, which are dedicated to an old girlfriend who, ten years earlier, had made him choose either her or his music. Plant explained this in an interview in 1975.

Easily my favorite song in Led Zep’s catalog and also one of my favorite songs, period. Everything about this track is otherworldly and majestic while also being melancholy and nostalgic. This what Plant said: Let me tell you a little story behind the song "Ten Years Gone" on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, "Right. It's me or your fans." Not that I had fans, but I said, "I can't stop, I've got to keep going." She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you. My comment: 10 years before this song was written Plant was only 16.

Context. In those days, most people didn't finish high school.By 16,most were working full time.In those days, you could fool the military and join at 16 as many people did.In countries where the drinking age is 18,in those days they'd serve a 16 year old. Many were considered emancipated at 16.Many people got married, and or had kids by 16.So while it may seem a bit weird or far fetched by the standards of 2022,it wouldn't have been in the late 1950's or early 1960's

@@pastorofmuppets22 We are talking about the 1960s, not the 1860s. In the 1960s to marry in the UK under 21 required the parental consent. 16 was the minimum age with consent which was also the age of consent. Plant and Maureen were 20 when they married. Maureen, a nurse, supported him financially before Zeppelin but he did work for her father at one stage under pressure to earn money. The woman said to be Plant's girlfriend before Maureen was Maureen's little sister. She was 12 in 1964 when the song was written.

@@davidcarter4247 In the 1960's everything I said happened, happened.People did leave school early to work.People did get married young.People did get in the military at 16.Idk why you brought up the 1860's,as if anything I said wasn't true?I was alive at the time,so I believe what I saw over what you tell me

16 is about right. LZ was formed when Plant (Bonham, too, really) was very young by contemporary standards.

You said it took you on a journey. Zeppelin has a number of songs that can do that. This is another one of those songs that you put your headphones on, close your eyes and let the song take you to another plain of existence

I grew up having been very familiar with LZ as my dad always played it in the house..but I didn’t go back and truly listen to their discography until a few years ago (I’m almost 30) and I’m so glad I did. This song is top three of theirs..makes me emotional..they are just geniuses!

One beautiful beginning, that transitions into amazing bluesy rock... That gives a feeling of absolute power throughout the song. A favorite that gets better every time! Well played, Brad n Lex! Yes Led Zeppelin never disappoints😁
