This song is about lead singer Brent Smith leaving his native Knoxville, Tennessee, to pursue a career in rock 'n' roll. He explained on Blabbermouth: "This song for me is the most personal song on the record because it's about how I grew up and my childhood. It's about throwing caution to the wind and going after what you truly want in life."

Her parents wanted her to go to college but she wanted to go to ballet school. Her being on the bus with the band means they all went against their parents and took a chance on their dreams rather than going with the plan.

@@georgejulien3286 I don't know what her response was as I assume it was deleted but I'm sorry if some ignoramus was their offensive self. Kudos to you for escaping that horrible life; that takes a LOT of strength as most cults refuse to let the rest of the family communicate with you when you leave. Peace. 💗

Wow. My son just left home after a stupid argument about a month ago. Wife and I have been between angry and heartbroken. This was a helpful reminder with the right message because some of my favorite times were taking him to concerts back in the day. Shinedown was one of them.

To me the song represents a young person daring to take a chance on their own personal dream rather than staying in a place because others expect it of you or think they need you. Sometimes we grow to resent family or friends that we may blame for us not reaching our potential but in the final analysis we should only blame ourselves if we don't find that courage and take that second chance at life.

This song was one of Shinedown's first songs to go mainstream and it was absolutely everywhere. It was on Good Morning America, pop stations, everyone picked it up. Which is hilarious bc they are /were hard rock. Their sounds changed a bit over the years, but that's because they had new members, right when this album came out actually, and different phases of Brent (who was the main writer for the earlier albums) life. Most of the songs are about him or people close to him.

Sometimes you won't get a chance to follow your dreams if you don't say goodbye....to your parents, to your hometown, etc. The little kid was hugging his mom because he already understood that they needed to say goodbye to Dad, in order for he and his Mom to start over, IMHO.

I love Shinedown. They are one of my favorite bands. I hope you do more of their songs and maybe some of their acoustic versions and the Smith & Myers acoustic cover songs. Some of their other great songs are 45, Call Me, Sound of Madness, I think it's their song Crow & Butterfly (with Lizzy Hale) and also Bully. They also did a great cover of Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

I think the song is about sometimes you have to leave everything you know to grow and have what you want in life. It’s not saying it’s anyone’s fault but it’s just the way it is. I think in the video she’s stuck in a life she hates working, listening to her parents fight over bills and she wants to try for her dream of being a dancer she has to make a choice to stay with her family and boyfriend and secure job or take a leap and leave and go for her dreams even though she loves those she’s Leaving behind. I think it also kind of implies at the end that her leaving is a wake up call and a second chance for them to do better with her little brother

Yea just don't pick any like serious shows like Good Morning America because unfortunately every time from touring he had a blown voice. It's a shame but touring was more important he wouldn't cancel shows because he was going to be on TV. I think even with a blown voice he still is amazing and better than most singers on a good day.

Aside from the song being about the lead singers personal experience, the message is that its okay to leave your current life to start a new one. In the story in the video the girl wants to be a ballet dancer and her parents don't approve. She leaves and in the letter tells them she isn't angry with them but had no choice but to leave in order to pursue her dreams. The second chance is resetting amd starting a new life with a 2nd chance to be happy.

I think the song speaks about unfulfilled dreams and the obstacles that get in the way, which could even be your parents. I work in a music store, and kids come to look at instruments for school band, (usually during the summer), or just because they wanna play guitar or drums. I can't tell you how many times I've seen parents berate them for wanting to play music instead of sports, or anything else they think is "better." Those kids look so crushed ... I was lucky that my parents supported me from the beginning when I picked up the guitar, even if they didn't enjoy my music.

I left home a month after graduation to go in to the AF. My dad told me to visit, but don't come back. I left everything behind and made a good life for myself. Never thought I would hear him say those words to me, but it's the best advice he ever gave me. The old man done good.

"Second Chance" is Shinedown's biggest hit and signature song. It spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, beginning December 27, 2008. After dominating the rock charts during the winter of 2008-2009, it crossed over to Top 40 radio in the spring of 2009, and slowly but surely climbed its way into the Top 10, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 20, 2009. Sadly, "Second Chance" is the last song to cross over from Mainstream Rock to become a Top 10 hit on the Hot 100. Sadder still, the last song to chart on Mainstream Rock and also the Top 40 of the Hot 100 was "Burn It Down" by Linkin Park, which peaked at #30 on the Hot 100 on May 5, 2012; and spent a week at #1 on Mainstream Rock, beginning June 30, 2012. Since the summer of 2012, no songs have crossed over from Mainstream Rock to the Top 40 of the Hot 100, which is a sin. TRIVIA: Legendary radio DJ Casey Kasem retired on July 4, 2009 after 39 years on nationally-syndicated radio. Kasem had already stepped down from his original weekly music countdown show, American Top 40, five and a half years before he retired, handing over the franchise to Ryan Seacrest, who first hosted the show on January 10, 2004 and still hosts it today. After stepping down from American Top 40, however, Kasem continued hosting two other countdown shows produced for Adult Contemporary radio stations until his retirement: American Top 20, which was produced for stations with "Hot AC" formats, and American Top 10, which was produced for stations with "Soft AC" formats. "Love Story" by Taylor Swift was the final #1 song on American Top 10, but American Top 20 had an ending that fit perfectly: The final #2 song was "If Today Was Your Last Day" by Nickelback, and the final #1 song was "Second Chance" by Shinedown. Here's audio of Casey Kasem announcing "Second Chance" as the final #1 song on American Top 20, on July 4, 2009: kzbin.info/www/bejne/onTbommsn6apjdU In fact, Shinedown included some of that audio in the buildup to "Second Chance" during their Planet Zero World Tour last year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpCVeIKVpN2Kp5I Less than five years after his retirement, Casey Kasem died on June 15, 2014. He was 82 years old. R.I.P. Casey.

It's personal to the singer as it reflects his growing up experience. But universally it's about the need to escape overbearing expectations or overbearing authority (especially parental) that stymies one's ability to reach their own potential and live their own life by their wishes and dreams. Sticking around would only lead to regret and resentment. So escaping "saying goodbye" is a second chance to do things right - to live - to repair the relationship. "tell mom and dad I'm not angry - but I need to do this to be complete."

Try this for something different if you want of course. Back in the 60s there was Paul Harvey radio broadcaster. He would have 2-3 minute little stories that really make you think. He was very famous. Listen to Paul Harvey "if I were the devil" this is done in the 60s about our future and he nails it. If I were a farmer is a good one also. Really cool

My guess is the video may not directly relate to the song. My takeaway is how growing up your parents have an idea of how they want you to do things their way, to maybe work in the same industry they did and maybe you the “goodbye” is them leaving to pursue their own dreams and be their own person.
