I am a die hard, life long metal guy and even I freely admit Depeche Mode's "Violator" is one of the best albums ever made. Dated a girl who was a huge fan of theirs. Had every album and wore a t-shirt. She got tickets to a Depeche Mode show and we went. I didn't know what to expect as shows for bands like this are a bit outside of my wheelhouse. I was blown away. Like jaw on the floor in awe. They killed it, had the place in the palm of their hand. 12,000 people singing EVERY word of every song in unison. And WAY more energy than you'd think. I remember being as exhausted as I was at the end of a Slayer show seeing them. Also, and a small thing that's giving me a bit of nostalgia and making me enjoy this reaction just a little bit more. The girl I dated back in those days wore the same style hat that Lex is wearing. Only her hat was all blue.

@@jeshkam Ha! A little later than you may think. This was around 2000. We had just graduated High School. Poe was the opener and even she was really good. Had a cordless microphone and was singing in the audience. Depeche Mode was unbelievable. I'll never get the sight and feeling of that many people all at once singing "All I ever wanted! All I ever needed is here in my arms! Words are very unnecessary! They can only do harm!" As for her she's married with a kid who is nearly as old as we were when we went to that show. We're still good friends and still talk on a regular basis.

I recommend trying " Enjoy The Silence" , : Behind The Wheel" or : Never Let Me Down Again". The song People Are People is the song that pushed this band into superstardom in the mid 80's.. Once again, Lex is astounding! How does she do this? She hears Marilyn Manson (who covered this song) and Nine Inch Nails and industrial rock, and Depeche Mode are basically a UK version of that, or at least some of the time. Their singer also famously has struggled with heroin addiction, so she gleaned that too. I've been a massive music fan for longer than I can remember, and I don't think I've ever known someone who could intuit so much from a first listen of any specific song.

According to the artist them selves this song is about having someone to call when you are in need, someone who always is there for you and helps you through things. The song also is about you being someone else's personal Jesus when they need you as well. Also fun fact. Marilyn Manson did a cover version of this song.

Martin Gore actually said it was inspired by 'Elvis and Me' and how Priscilla worshipped Elvis like her God. And that lots of relationships are like that where that one person is just over idolized and it brings an unbalance to the relationship. @plainsong76 This was from Violator in '89 and SOFAD came after the band took a 2 year break after the Violator tours were done. David (the lead singer) did get addicted to heroine during that time as he moved to LA and hung out with Sound Garden and some other grunge bands. It sounds to me like a relatiomship song where he's singing about his girl needing her own Personal Jesus i.e. him. That he can convince her to "believe" in his "religion" which may be love between them two or something else

Brad & Lex, You'll love their "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Everything Counts". Their Global Spirit ConcertTour May2017-July2018 grossed $202 million. Now that's staying power!! (their first top 10 hit was from 1981 in the UK). This song is from 1989.

Depeche Mode is my all time favorite group. I've been a fan of there's since 1983, I was 6 years old when my older sister came home with their ConstructionTime album. 10 years later we saw them on there 1993 Devotional Tour at MSG and we had 2nd row seats. It was hands down the best concert I've ever been to. That night truly changed my life.

In 2017, I splurged and flew to London to see Depeche Mode play the olympic stadium there. I had VIP tickets right at the stage with 80,000 screaming fans behind me..... that was one of the best nights of my life. Love this band. One thing with this band.... often times the videos are a HUGE indicator as to the interpretation of the lyrics. They really do add a very important layer to the music

DM was one of my faves, along with other electro rock bands they were an alternative to the 80's hairbands . That is a deep well of music you just tapped into. Now try some Front 242, especially "headhunter", that song is still played in clubs

I used to collect their singles on 12" records, (you know vinyl) back in high school '89-'93. Anyway, the end half that gets a little musically "heavy" was actually one half of my FAVORITE remix of this song. So glad when Violator came out, they used at least half of it 😂

Funny: I know this song for AGES and love it... I also LOVE Elvis Presley, and today, after watching Elvis again for uncountable times, I saw your reaction which, with the "drug" hypothesis makes me look for the meaning of this song, and it was inspired by Elvis... He was the "personal Jesus"... How could I discover that after 30 years of intensely listening to music, DM and Elvis being one of those ? Anyway, thank you for the reaction, and the indirect knowledge that one of my favorite songs was just about one of my favorite performers...

Fell in love with them in the early 80s while I was in high school in Arkansas. ... I was definitely a fish out of water. The first concert of theirs I attended was for their violator album (I saw them in concert a total of 3 times), and they blew me away--I left the concert totally enamored and Depeche Mode has been my favorite band ever since. The concert experience is just different. I still have strong reaction to their music. The mainstream hits are great, but when you deep-dive this band you will discover so much amazing music. My best friend was also a huge fan and we went to two concerts together before he passed. Our mutual favorite song is "never let me down again" and every time I hear it, I feel his presence near me. Heck, I can even see his weird dance in my head, and I can see his face vividly despite him being gone for 25 years. Thanks for reacting.

They started out as a synth pop band. 3 men on Keys/synthesizers and a vocalist. Listen to songs like Photographic, New Life and Just Can't Get Enough. Later Martin Gore started playing guitar. David Gahan are a very great singer. In the original Line Up were also Vince Clarke. He later made Yazoo with Alison Moyet. Check out Don't Go, Only You and Winter Kills. Later he created Erasure with Andy Bell. You should also check out Depeche Mode - Barrel of a Gun and Master & Servant. Talking about drugs you should listen to Never Let Me Down Again

In this episode of Brad & Lex, the hard hitting percussion immediately causes Brad to grin as he abandons his oh so familiar signature "side to side sway" for more of a "side to side sway bop". His commentary suggests that church would've been better with this sound as Lex goes into a "peck bop" while getting her shoulders in on the action. Both enjoy the uptempo hoppy rhythm.

I believe that Violator is a concept album about drug addiction. From the first song, World in my Eyes, about the pleasure in the initial drug addiction, to the final track, Clean, about, well, becoming clean. I agree with Lex that Personal Jesus is about a drug dealer. Every song is a different aspect of drug addiction, from getting that token in Sweetest Perfection, to the loss conveyed in Blue Dress. But, that's just my opinion. I might be wrong.
