2 lads in my team both around 30 also had no idea who Depeche Mode were (I'd just seen them the previous night for what the 6th or 7th time). Played Enjoy the Silence for them they recognised the tune but had no idea who the band were. Similarly they had no clue about Pet Shop Boys. Lot of young people have no clue, they've never been to a concert - they can't afford it.

@@Manclad-wv1zy i lived in england in most of the 90s and nobody i met cared about them. They were on tv 2 times in the 6 years i lived there. And 90% of people I met said... didnt they die out in the 80s ? So that makes totally sense to me... Brits didnt care about most of the British bands i know...

Dave Gahan (singer) is one of music's great survivors. He very nearly died, the heroin had a really, really big bad hold on him. He not only recovered, this video is of him post recovery. A remarkable strength to come back from those depths, back to the top again. I have endless respect for recovering addicts.

@CBGB_1977 I'm GenX and Freddie Mercury is my Freddie Mercury! I don't really see the comparison, other than the basic thing that they're both great front men. And I guess they both partied hard. But not in the same way! Dave would take the comparison as a huge compliment though I'm sure 🙂.

My favorite thing about 80s new wave is that it has gotten better with time. During the 80s, at least in pop and rock, there was a bit of division. You had fans of what would become classic rock, people inspired by the 70s. Then there was glam rock and the proto new metal. Of course there was overlap between those two groups, lots of it. Then, finally, there was new wave, and not a ton of overlap. There were radio stations that would play Deep Purple and Def Leppard but if you wanted to hear Echo and the Bunnymen you needed to spin the dial. At the time, the criticism of new wave was that it was 'soft' as compared to rock, with absolutely no commentary on the quality. Now, of course, with people our age, the overlap in fans for all of those genres is near complete. Nearly all of us would be happy with a radio station that went from Boston to Metallica to Tear for Fears. More, though, in terms of artistic merit, new wave has finally gotten its due. For my money anyways, new wave is much more timeless than that late 80s glam rock.

I had to practically turn the world upside down to get to see them in San Antonio last year- that was hard enough. Aside from it being a nine hr drive from Central Arkansas with three nights hotel stay to cover, I also had to shell out $900 for a caregiver to stay with my elderly parents who both had dementia and have since passed. It became a rather expensive trip. Lol But worth every freaking penny!

Always makes me SO happy to see yet another “kid” discovering a band like Depeche Mode. April 2023 I had to move mountains to get to San Antonio, TX, nine hrs from my home in central Arkansas, and overcome a list of other complications and hurdles, but I managed to see them at the beginning of their last tour, and was really impressed with how much energy they still have onstage. Dave is still the ultimate frontman, still all over the stage throughout-he always manages to hold the audience in his palm the whole time. I knew there would be a sizable number of younger fans-I’d say about 30% (at least) were under 30. They’re still popular with younger people, like my 17 year old, who has grown up being introduced to this from both parents, and really loving it. She was actually the one who was supposed to go w/me-but of course something had to screw that up and keep her from being able to go. (Obviously I still went and loved the show, but just wish she’d been there w/me.)

@@angelamatous1917 it was synth everywhere around Europe. Hes not sussed on music... New Wave was just bands that qas seen as part of the new wave movement. Depeche was never part of that whole scene... Spme said New Romantic but that was just lazy journalism as always. Too hard to be part of those scenes... In Denmark in 1983 we all said Techno... But that was stolen for all that German and Belgian stuff so we kust took Synth as thats what Sweden used and England too would say Synth pop. So when bands like Camouflage and De/Vision and Mesh and Wolfsheim blew up in rhe 90s ot was easier to just use Synth as there were so much of it...

I was born in 1972...in High School, this was my favorite band, I listened to all kinds of music, from Slayer to Tchaikovsky (band geek, played trombone and tuba) , I got to see them live at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, in 1990. I am so glad you have finally gotten here, so nostalgic! Check out 'Master and Servant', 'People are People', 'Personal Jesus'....really? any of their early catalogue.

Depeche Mode is a mix of 80s industrial rock, nu-wave, synth-pop, and goth. Goths love them, metalheads love them, and pop listeners love them too. Enjoy the Silence is technically synth-pop or synth rock. And they are British. And from the 80s into the 90s. But came out with a new album last year. My favorite song is Everything Counts. I heard that song first as a cover by a Swedish Death Metal band. Personal Jesus is a favorite of mine too. Depeche Mode is the most covered band in the world. Enjoy the Silence is the most covered song ever in history. Every modern band from emo to gothic to swedish death metal has either covered this song or covered another Depeche Mode song.

Usually this kind of music is not my style. I love Depeche Mode though. With Dave Gahan a real character as lead singer. For a while it didn't look good for him back then. But he got himself together and they are still here. Lots of great tracks. An underrated and not too popular one is the later "It's No Good" with a fantastic music video in my opinion.

Omg…. Concerts cannot be replicated. To be in that crowd, with thousands of fellow fans, chanting lyrics with your favorite bands and artists. It’s incredible. Then it happens! The lead singer dances up the aisle to your section and before reality sets in… you can literally touch Steven Tyler or Jon Bon Jovi or Prince. Getting front row seats for Def Leopard or Chicago or INXS or Styx or Whitesnake or Journey or Frampton or YES or Boston or ELO or Poison or Van Halen or Springsteen. I can just keep going. We were lucky to have these concerts when music was great and you could get front row for $100-200, USD. Unfortunately, it’s in the thousands now. But save up and pick one. Doesn’t have to be front row, just being in a crowd singing their song to the bands. You never sit down, you pay for the seats and end up standing, singing and clapping for hours. I hope you get to experience a live concert. ❤
