i think i have like 2a hair so it's not that curly but still it is almost never tangled anymore whereas it used to be sooo tangled all the time when i was younger, because my mom didn't know any better and had me brush it and shampoo it a ton, and i also didn't get it cut it enough to remove split ends. once i stopped brushing it and changed my washing routine the tangles gradually just stopped happening unless it's been too long since i cut it and at that point the ends have gotten damaged and start to snag on each other. i guess what i'm saying is there's of course unavoidable tangles especially if your hair is curly and long and it gets mussed up, but the kind of tangles that just appear out of nowhere and are due to split ends are something else. but ultimately yeah i agree what he said applies less the further up the scale you go.

So for the damaged or not damaged criteria, most of what he is describing only applies to straight or less curly hair. If you have 4C hair you are obviously going spend longer under the dryer or have issues with running your fingers through your hair and that does NOT mean that it is damaged. Even the density aspect as well. Most Afro hair textures will be considered as high density in his own books because it's rare to be able to see the scalp of someone with an afro because of shrinkage and the curl pattern covering most of the scalp where hair may actually not be growing out of. Moral of the story: If you want to understand your hair take advice from someone who specializes in your own specific hair type or category.
Thank you for saying this! He even said a lot of things that just aren’t correct for the more wavy/curly white people, at least imo and based off the comments. I’m a 2C and it’s completely normal for my dead “shed” hairs to just “hang out” in my hair until I comb (I never use a brush, only a very wide tooth comb) my hair or shower. So it seems like I’m losing all this hair at once but it’s just normally she’d hair from the day that doesn’t fall because I don’t that thin/nondense straight hair lol. It’s also normal for my air dried hair to take 10-12hrs, especially if at some point I put it up then it won’t ever dry. There’s a reason when I do shower I shower early evening and give my hair a whole night start to dry.

You're 100% right, most of the things he said weren't true for people with coarser hair types, and a lot of biracial people and most brown and Black people have hair that's unhealthy by his definition but in reality is perfectly fine.

PSA: the American academy of dermatology says that dandruff is more often because of overly oily hair. Many people think a dry scalp is the cause, but dry scalp dandruff is different in color and usually much smaller.
@shellyyy39454 жыл бұрын
So like big ish flat pieces of dry scalp=overly oily? Makes sense. I go 2 days without a shampoo and bam it looks like i stuck my head in a bucket of oil. Could also be that the scalp is actually so dry it overcompensates, sorta likr the skin on the face can?

quixotic sonnet ok. I do know Thank AAD says that the everyday dandruff people complain about is caused by oily scalp.
@sarahmortimer28604 жыл бұрын
Michelle Phillips yeah. Dandruff from a dry scalp will generally be smaller. Dandruff in oily hair is because of over production of oil. And dandruff from a dry scalp will be smaller and scale like, not caused by oil production.

I was wondering if that was the case. I used to only wash my hair once a week (it was fried). Then when it started becoming healthy again I kept using that wash pattern and I would get an itchy scalp and dandruff. I recently switched to washing twice a week and that problem has gone away.

@calahara4 жыл бұрын
I'd go watch manes by mell, she's a textured hair expert and hair stylist. Also, ignore this video, it's full of things that simply aren't true. Example, fine hair is about hair diameter and not density. Yes, that thing he said he found annoying when people get it wrong. We don't call fine sugar thin sugar for a reason. You can google fine hair definition if you want to check, I know I did (I still can't quite fathom why he's so incorrect). - Curly hair tends to tangle more easily (fine hair too). Imagine a string in a circle, it's got this shelf-like protection thing going on (hair cuticles), the outer side shelves are sticking out a bit and the inner side has a tight structure. - If your hair grows slowly, it just means most of your hair has been longer on your head then other heads with faster growth rates. Doesn't mean your new hair is any different but it does mean you have to take more care of your hair for it to be looking the same towards the ends. - The ends are always more damaged then the rest of your hair because it's gotten through more wear and tear, especially when it grows slowly. - Hair normally stretches a bit, if your hair breaks at the slightest pull, it's very damaged. When your hair is wet, it stretches better so do test on wet hair. If you hair keeps on stretching (and doesn't bounce back?), your hair may have a moisture overload and needs some protein. If your hair stretches and bounces back, you're doing good. There's probably a guide somewhere for how much stretch you should be looking for. Maybe Brad's thinking about hygral fatigue, who knows, then your hair doesn't stretch much when wet and then doesn't bounce back. - My hair takes long to dry too, it depends on a lot of factors as to why. Hair texture, the weather, leave in products, you name it. Damaged hair often actually dries really fast because when the hair shafts are damaged, the water gets in the hair easily but can leave the hair without much difficulty as well. Your hair is more high porosity when the shafts are more open but that doesn't mean you can't make it look healthy, it just needs some more attention/protein. I have never heard of damaged hair that just stays wet. Low porosity is regarded usually as very healthy. You can have low porosity with curly hair. Your hairs porosity doesn't have to be the same everywhere, it's usually higher at the ends and lower at the roots. - If you don't brush your hair often, you're getting the hair loss of multiple days in one go. Also, when you have a lot of hair, you're going to lose more. Wouldn't worry too much about it. - Curly hair doesn't shine as easily as straight, especially blonde, hair. Hope that helps.

Long time of drying for hair not necessarily means that hair are damaged.. If you have thick or high density hair and they're good looking and shiny, the can take more time to dry. Just a reminder, you usually need to touch the hair, their ends to check if they're damaged - you will see and feel if they have splitting ends, broken structure, or if they're silky, nice in touch and shiny

I feel like people are not understanding what he is saying, especially people with curly hair. When he said that when your hair is stretchy it means that it’s damage , he doesn’t mean when you grab a curl and a pull it. Its more like when you pull your curl straight then pull again, if it’s still stretchy then it’s damaged. Again with the brushing hair and having more than 15 strands come out, I know a lot of people that have curly hair don’t usually brush it everyday because it causes frizz so if you don’t brush your hair then obviously more hair is gonna come out when you do brush it because you didn’t brush it previously. And with running your hands through your hair and it being easily tangled again if you have curly hair is different for you, if you run your hands your hair after you have brushed it and it tangled then it’s damaged. I have two strands of hair that are pleased and I know that when I brush it it is a little bit more tangled in the bleached part and it is an address in my head because one hair is treated the other one it’s not you guys have to use common sense with things

I’m not a huge fan when Brad talks about curly hair. Sometimes he says things opposite of what curly hair stylists say. My hair is 3a/3b, fine, medium density. If you don’t already, check out Manes By Mell. She’s a certified hairstylist and textured hair specialist. She’s awesome.

Just a quick comment on the nature of wavy hair that I've learned the hard way (and been told a curly hair salon I visited): if your hair is short, it will be less wavy or will need more work to form those waves/curls. As a 2b/2c, I formed my waves/curls fairly easily but when I got my hair cut to a long pixie and now in a bob, it's been more difficult getting those same waves/curls. As it's grown, I've watched my hair reform those waves and curls (or do so more easily). By contrast, my son has 3a hair and his similar-length hair forms curls with no problem; just scrunch and go. So if your hair is wavy, keep that in mind- I still enjoyed my shorter hair but it did not look or behave like its longer version.

Same! My hair is all over the place like I can’t tell if I’m 2b, 2c, or 3a because my hair is just ALL OF IT. But it’s really beautiful when people have mixed wave patterns imo and I get lots of compliments, so I’m not complaining 😂

@Plushiecandie4 жыл бұрын
It's still wavy n curly technically, its just the weight of the hair pulls it down, or it could be damaged, there are tips to get more definition.
@idontknowtheirname61224 жыл бұрын
mine used too, then I cut it short and when my hair is cut short it is a 2a with a mix of 2b and 2c when it's damaged
@yarines98434 жыл бұрын
Brad does say that almost everybody has a curl pattern but he mentioned some criteria that don't apply to curlier hair types. That's why there's a lot of confused curly haired people in the comments especially with the stretchy hair criteria because curly hair shrinks so it also stretches naturally. Here's the thing: each curl type has a shrinkage percentage that goes up to 90% for those who have 4c hair. I have (mainly) 3b hair and my shrinkage goes up to 30-40%. Shrinkage goes by the hand of a hair quality: elasticity. If your hair reaches the maximum shrinkage for your curl type it means your elasticity is in a good condition. If your hair gets damage you will lose elasticity and your hair can appear less curly. In a sense you can say that your hair has stretched. So, if you grab a curl and it stretches a lot it doesn't mean that you hair is damaged, it's probably really healthy. But if your hair used to shrink quite a lot, but your curls start to look looser when it dries ( after straightening it a lot, over processing it or doing chemical straightening treatments for a while) that's actually a sign of damage. So focusing on the appearance of curly hair, it would be more accurate to say that the loss of your curl pattern or the loss of shrinkage are signs of damage and no just "if it's stretches then it's damage" cause it's not that simple. Nobody is going to read this but at least I feel better now 😂😂
@AudsOrbits4 жыл бұрын
Well, at least one person read it, & that's me haha. Your explanation makes a ton of sense, and I realize that - likely due to straightening my hair a lot as a kid - my hair is a bit damaged. The elasticity of my curly hair has shrunk from 3c to 3a. I wonder if anyone has some product solutions to revive my hair :")
@yarines98434 жыл бұрын
@@AudsOrbits I'm sorry for replying so late but I do have some recommendations for you. These are not actual products, though. The best advice someone gave me when I started my curly transition was: cut it. Either it is doing a big chop or getting rid of straight ends if you have them, cutting your hair is the best solution to get rid of damage. The second thing I would tell you is that hydration is super needed. Doing a pre-pooh once a week or a hair mask or even both really helped my hair. For actual products, Cantu products and Shea Moisture's Curl & Shine line worked for me. Also, while going natural or reviving your curls, styling techniques really help to "educate" your curl to form properly, it takes more time but your curls will look good. I hope I helped a bit.
@TXBHenleyFan4 жыл бұрын
I read it!
@blossomgutierrez69634 жыл бұрын
He's not talking about shrinkage, he's talking about elasticity. If you have curly hair, first stretch out the curl of a single strand of hair, THEN try to stretch it even more using both hands; if it's healthy it shouldn't stretch like a rubber band it should just break off it shouldn't be stretchy or gummy
