@@user-kq2we1ex3h I don't think he took advantage of anything. That was her personal story to tell, he is here to talk about the hair itself. He didn't say anything wrong about why her hair was falling out or anything. It really doesn't matter WHY her hair is so compromised, what matters is that you shouldn't put in a relaxer while your hair is compromised (for any reason).

Hey its me the first girl! I was natural 10 plus years..loved it..my youtube was actually a hair channel! I also did natural hair for a living...I only decided to relax my hair because since having my son I have no time to do my hair..literally not a moment to myself. I walked around with matted hair a year while suffering from post partum depression and I just wanted to relax my hair so it would be easier to manage and I could stop looking a mess..I have older girls, and I didn't want them to start to think it's ok to not take care of yourself. So this was my failed attempt at taking care of myself 😔 ..currently still wearing a scarf because I have no sitter while I go to a salon, hence the reason I attempted the relaxer myself..but thank you everyone for your kind words and thank you Brad..next step is chopping it all off like u guys recommended .❤❤

I felt the first girl so much when she said she just wanted to have her hair "done" and just wanted to feel her best self. Often as black women, we attach so much of our value to the way our hair looks. If we dont have loose curls or inches of hair that falls down our back or if our hair isnt styled and tucked in neatly, sometimes it makes you feel...less beautiful. It took me so long to love the way my hair looks and I know so many others who have felt the same way. It's a hard feeling to combat and I still fight with it everyday. But no matter what you're beautiful. Your hair does not define you, both girls were beautiful before and after ❤️

@@ejuwera Oh ok I understand. As a type 3 who is good at doing so many things with my hair EXCEPT putting in a relaxer, I'm just one to give up and say relaxers suck. My hair is very time-consuming as well in its natural state because it's low in porosity and dries up easily. But relaxers of any kind never make my hair look better. The best thing for my hair is just to enjoy 3/4 of the colder part of the year living in one of the driest states and to keep it under a scarf or headband in the dry hot summers. I hate summer. But ugh, right now, one month later after using a relaxer, and my hair's godsend is aloe straight from the plant or I might not have any hair at all.

It's fine to want to feel confident in yourself but what she's saying is me and my natural hair doesn't make me feel pretty and If you look at the underlying reasons for that it's because natural hair isn't considered beautiful in mainstream society.

I or my mom never let my hair burn. It gets warm but never burn. My beautician doesnt want me to burn either.. I think one of the techniques of getting it bone straight was making sure you comb it straight and keeping the hair straight. I know your not supposed to comb through but there is a balancing act to it. A medium comb through sections and definitely not a fine tooth comb. The key was keeping the hair straight.

Hair is such a personal journey and no one should feel pressured to do one thing or the other. Relaxer was so normal when I was a kid and I honestly got burned a few times from people who didn't know what they were doing. I went natural back in 2016 and it was also a journey (iykyk) . Decided to start my loc journey last year and I've never been happier with my hair.

I was relaxed for as long as I could remember but my mum decided I would stop. After having heard how much people complained about natural hair I was scared and upset, but my hair wasn't healthy. Now, however, I really couldn't be happier with my hair and myself as a person. It may sound silly but my natural hair did a lot for me personally and I feel more comfortable and more beautiful than I did with my relaxed hair. Yes it's high maintenance but because I fell I love with it after all the struggling and jokingly talking about chopping it off, it's all worth it. I big chopped 2016 after transitioning for 8 months and am going strong. Never regretted it. I'm not one of those naturals who believe we are better, hair is like a canvas, do with it as you will, it's yours. Do what makes you happy, so whether it's natural, relaxed, locked, short etc, be proud of it

I used to do hair and had a client that wanted me to do a relaxer on her. I told her we'd have to let her perm grow out first I because a perm and relaxer will make your hair fall out. She wanted to just do it on her own and I again tried to explain to her that Perm (Ammonium thioglycolate) + Relaxer (Sodium Hydroxide) are the 2 main ingredients that are used in hair removers like Nair. She didn't believe me and came in the next day bald. She did look cute in hats.

I remember doing relaxers in the hairdressers I worked in as an apprentice. Literally, we were allowed to prep, that was it. We must've watched about 100 clients before even being allowed to mix the relaxer. The owner was THAT strict. He unapologetically refused to relax hair if the hair was not thick and healthy enough to 'live through it'. He banned curly perms all together on European hair, which judging by the state of my mother's hair, I could see why. Lol. Some ppl thought him a bit extra, were as I agreed with him that your hair and face are your beauty and he didn't want the responsibility put on him when it all went horribly wrong, which has been the case many a time with ppl who simply can't take advice then want to blame you when they turn into baldilocks. The neutralizer doesn't lock in the "straight", the neutralizer simply neutralizes the action of the chemicals that straightened the hair in other words, if you rinse the hair and don't neutralize it the LYE keeps going and melting and destroying the hair. I also know folks who thought they could just use regular shampoo becuz the little 2 oz bottle of neutralizing shampoo was not enough instead of spending the extra 5.00 for a separate bottle of neutralizing shampoo to be sure to have enough... My mom would perm my hair as a child just enough to style it and work with it (my hair was thick as shit lmaoo I was always breaking combs and it just wouldn’t corporate) but she knew what she was doing it was maybe like every 5 or 6 months and she’d leave it in for like 5 minutes if that. I had the most beautiful luscious thick hair. Well one summer I was going to my dads house and she permed it so she can do a cute style and she told my step mom (who braids hair) don’t perm her hair I already did etc. I even told her too that my mom already did. Well she thought that my mom didn’t know shit about hair cause she was the “professional” and forced me anyways to put a perm in my head. I remember her leaving it in for what felt like so long and I remember my scalp burning and she ended up damaging all if not most of my hair. It fell out. I was 8 years old. I have Alopecia, had it since I was 9 (now 25) and do feel for them because it’s such an emotional change when your hair falls out, I remember my mom having to shave the remains of my hair and it’s so profound that people really don’t understand the emotional side of hair loss. I totally understand, I too suffer from alopecia. It's so hurtful when people say, "just wear a wig", "try this oil", or "take these natural supplements". Alopecia is so complex and there are so many different types. A lot of times we suffer all alone because the emotional side is so tough, it's like losing apart of yourself. And unless you experience it, you can't understand the depth of despair.

I had 3 years of intense chemo for leukaemia as a teen. The chunks of hair coming out was so traumatic that when normal shedding happens in the shower now my stomach still drops a bit. My curly hair was such a big part of my identity as a black woman. It was the first thing people noticed about me. It's so much more than hair. My stepdad (shaves his head bald all the time) sat me down to shave it when it got patchy. Just that moment of solidarity between us sticks in My head so much.

My quick relaxer saga: I’m half Dominican half white. My father is very dark skin and I got all his genes so my hair is a 3C/4A depending on the section. I was always taught my hair was not beautiful. And it was rough especially seeing all my white family with their blonde straight hair. So for years I was forced to relax my hair once a month and go to the salon 2 a month. I then would still have to straighten it almost everyday. My hair was fried. I eventually stopped and then there was a break. But a couple years ago I decided to do a chop. And start my natural hair journey. It was definitely an experience I never had anyone to teach me how to take care of my hair properly. So I’m still learning. Even to this day my Dominican family tells me that I’m lazy bc I keep my hair natural instead of straight. And it’s bc I simply don’t want to take the time to do it. There’s comments like my hair is bad hair and not good hair bc I keep it curly. I’m not mad at my family. My grandmother is an immigrant. Coming here she felt so forced to be American. And she felt if she straightened her hair it would help her blend in. I’ve never seen my grandmother leave the house without straightening her hair. It’s sad but it’s the truth. And I had to reteach myself how to look at my hair. All the inward racism I had hating my skin color and my hair, my eyes my everything. I had to learn that I was beautiful my brown skin, my coily hair is beautiful. But yeah, it’s difficult ppl pressure us to feel like this is our only option. I love my hair now, and it’s healthy and beautiful. And maybe it’ll never be as long as i want. Or will forever me frizzy and huge but it’s perfect.

Did you let her know you had permed it prior to her bleaching it? All hair stylists know that if you previously permed or relaxed your hair there is an extremely high chance it will break/fall off if you bleach it on top of it, if you didn’t let her know before she did it and it did break off I would be extremely upset with you as well for not letting me know. That’s why we ask you your history and everything before doing your hair. I’ve had it happen to me once where the girl lied to me about bleaching her hair before I permed it and it all broke off where she had bleached it previously and then died it back to her natural color and I was really upset with her(though I didn’t show it) I had to just give her a bob basically above where it had broken off, it ended up looking beautiful in the end but it wasn’t what she wanted, and it was all because she wasn’t honest with me.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s when getting a relaxer was the standard and people who wore their hair naturally were shamed. But here's the thing, relaxer will ALWAYS cause your hair to fall out. People (like me) who ONLY did a perm at professional salons STILL had their hair fall out. The only thing going to professionals did was delay the process. It happened to me. It happened to a random person who ran to the hairdresser crying while I was getting box braids on natural hair. It happened to my friends. Perm = your hair will fall out. Period. Also, and I will put this in all caps, THE HAIR DOESN'T GROW BACK. (It MIGHT if you stop immediately after your hair falls out the first time, but SO MANY PEOPLE see their hair grow back and perm it again. So the damage becomes permanent.) So, I don't know if I do relaxer shaming, but if anyone around me mentions wanting to get a perm, I do everything I can to talk them out of it. Nothing is worth killing your hair like that. The last thing I want to say is that the models on those relaxer boxes recently came out and ALL said that their hair weren't permed. Those were blow outs.

Hair stylist here! Very familiar with relaxers (I also do my own)! And my hair is almost down to my butt..... The first girl's issue, besides her hair already being damaged.... I suspect she left it in WAY TOO LONG! The timing of a relaxer starts as soon as you start applying it! Depending on relaxer strength and hair diameter (not tightness of curl!), it should only be in for 10-20 minutes start to finish MAX. And that includes having to go back through and smooth the product. There is no way she has enough time to just have it sitting in her hair while she talked to the camera. Also! I've noticed people will select a strength that is way too strong for their hair type! They think the tighter their curl, they'll need a stronger relaxer. No, this is not correct! You need to look at the individual hair strand and assess is it fine (thin), medium (average), or coarse (thick). I've done a lot of relaxers and I have only once or twice needed to use a super strength relaxer. Most can get away with a mild strength, some need normal strength, but VERY RARELY will you need a super. Another thing! Do not relaxer your hair more than every 7-8 weeks, unless you have a very short style that requires it. I won't do my own relaxer before 4 months have passed honestly. I know new growth sucks, but to prevent overlap, wait 2 months at least. The second girl. Sigh. Just no. I refuse to bleach relaxed hair to be real honest. From what I've seen, it seriously compromises the integrity of your hair and causes breakage. Coloring is fine, just not on the same day (unless it's a semi or temporary) and even then I won't go above 20 volume. Alright, I'm off my soap box!

I’ve always used relaxers since I was 8! And now I’m 21, I’ve stopped 3 years ago and my hair is really strong now and longer than ever (medium length), but now that’s curly it’s just so much work. I keep on thinking of going back to relaxing my hair but I don’t wanna lose my hair, any advice on what to do?

I went to high school with a lot of black girls and we got on the topic of white vs black perms. I had gotten one before and I explained our process. Then they explained theirs and all the prep they did to protect their hair and then the process of the perm/relaxer. Relaxers are no joke! It was a job to prep and then do! This was in the 90s before natural hair so all the black girls permed their hair. They always came back after that weekend looking good. But knowing the process was something else. I am so glad we live in a time were black or white natural curls are embraced. 🥰🤗

This exactly why my momma didn’t play that relaxer stuff. After my oldest sister learned the hard way even after going to the salon, she never allowed me and my middle sister to get and now my oldest is natural. What many don’t realize is you have to be dedicated to your healthy hair whether relaxed or permed and a perm isn’t gonna make it any easier just changes what you need to do to protect your hair and it won’t make damaged hair better like you said brad.

I definitely feel for the first girl. I have kids as well and even if you know how to care for your texture hair, it's still hard finding the time between your kids and professional life (school/work) to really give it the time and dedication it needs. It can be done but it's not easy. I considered the perm route but I had bad experiences as a child so I went to KZbin university and learned how to do faux locs, Senegalese twist, sew-ins, and wig-making😂

@@Sara-dp5dg You'd be surprised at what you can do with locs, especially once they get longer. I expected to just wear them down (and I do sometimes) but I can do more styles than I ever could with my hair relaxed, loose natural, or in an afro (and in less time too). Maybe try googling some loc styles and see if anything appeals to you.

Funny thing is I did the exact same thing the second girl did. And I went to a professional! I was 17 and I wanted my hair Beyoncé blonde. She charged me 300+ dollars, she relaxed and dyed my hair in the same day. Get this, I have the DARKEST black hair and she had to lighten my hair like three times. She did the relaxer first then the dye. So relaxer, three lightening processes and a Permanent color put on in ONE FUCKING day! I lost so much hair I had burns and scabs all over my scalp and 13 years later I am suffering from the effects of that day on my scalp. I was young, uneducated and dumb. I trusted a “professional “ I’m was so traumatized that 13 years later I dare not dye my real hair lol
