Because the Xbox One, PS4, PS3, X360. Are still in homes. A ton of great games still available. And Great Prices on Hardware and Games. The Current Generation is not a Huge jump except for a Handful of Games and very expensive...

Xbox just needs to make a steam deck with dock style console offer both steam and the Microsoft store and make sure games are backwards compatibility atleast digitally or maybe offer a disc drive on the dock to be able to play them that way

Peak was OG XB, GC, PS2, 3DS imho. I love the 7th gen too to be clear, with the exception of the Wii which imho straight up sucked, but X360 and PS3 were less interesting to me as well to be honest: PS3 was fairly bad for multiplats, it's also the gen that started the whole game as a movie trend which I hate with a passion. X360 was great mostly for LIVE and the friends we made, but games were less interesting, more corporate overall, with terribly cheap hw on top. It's an awesome gen still, but 7th wasn't perfect. The sixth one is highly underrated however!

I think a not insignificant part of it is a ton of people on both PlayStation and Xbox pretty much just play you know their call of duty or FIFA or Madden games and those have been continuing to come out on the last gen consoles maybe up to this year? A huge amount of people just treat their console as their FIFA machine in the old consoles are still fine for that In addition to the pandemic and inflation and all that other stuff I'm sure too

In all honesty, since most of the games on Gamepass on both on Xbox Series and PC, and since my PC is way more powerful than the console, what's the point of having a console anymore...Only thing I miss is Quickresume on xbox and full Dolby Vision support.

Things are trending in that direction, but I don't think we're in a post-console era, yet. I think it's just that, like with other industries where there are one or two dominant entities, there is a self-reinforcing effect where those dominant entities continue to draw business, regardless of anything else. Or despite anything else. PlayStation and Nintendo are beloved companies that, whether consciously or subconsciously, are treated by gamers and gaming media-at-large as if they can do no wrong. I think this is the reason why so many gamers seem blissfully unaware of the complexities the industry is facing, while fixating on a few _bad actors,_ for lack of a better term, like Xbox, Activision and Ubisoft.

Do you think the PlayStation Pro could gain a measurable number of conquest customers? People who currently only have an Xbox or possibly people who have a Xbox Series X and an older PlayStation? If some current Xbox players are thinking about switching and the next generation is years away, why not jump ship now rather than spending more money on games and controllers for a system you plan to leave?

Something I've noticed recently with the gaming zeitgeist, is the tribalism and fanboyism leads to justifications that wouldn't hold up in most other industries. Growing up based on how everyone talked about xbox compared to the others I assumed the sales difference was like 500 million to a billion+. Then I learned that the differennce is more like 50 million to 120m (PS) to 150m (Nintendo) and WTF?! Those sales would be disasters in any other industry especially after over two decades. Xbox peaked in the 360 era at 80m and Sony way back in the PS2 era at 155m. Consoles aren't just a failure but they keep getting worse. And those are LIFETIME sales. These are all global devices. For comparison Apple the minority (iOS is only like 20% globally) sells 200ish million new iPhones in a year (as in the most recent model that just debuted). And that's at 2 or 3x the price of these consoles. Mobile gamers are in the billions (3 billion+) and is where all the money is coming from that keeps saying the gaming industry is massive. Pc gamers are smaller than console in total but far less fragmenting. Each individual console's MUA is pathetic and smaller than any other gaming space. Thinking about it why should anyone by a console? For so many years they did marketing based on console wars which just led to gatekeeping and all three looking like a comedy routine where 22 year old boys fight over which box of plastic is best. There's no good gaurtenee you can even play old games on new hardware within the same ecosystem (even first party) and the entire premise is fragmenting libraries due to first and third party exclusives. I hate all three console makers right now with how they've poisoned the industry. Of course things are bad. We've been ignoring a shrinking audience for over a decade while costs for AAA console games keep going up to meet unreasonable demands. Third party publishers are forced to contend with the market Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft set up which isn't great. Their other option is PC but again it's not too big itself and is held back by cost and accessibility. I don't expect the gaming industry to improve until either PC costs go down and ease of access increases which we see in devices like the steam deck. Alternatively if Cloud gaming takes off the a form of the stadia model with more trust comes around (purchasing games directly otherwise we get into another subscription streaming issue) or mobile hardware improves enough that any smartphone is as capable as a switch for gaming. Consoles as is are just a stain on the industry though. We need something that actually works to reach general audiences and can grow the industry.

I think the issue with consoles is the modularity of a PC has genuinely cannibalized the market… when Nvidia releases a new powerful GPU every two years with killer features it is hard to think two exactly the same consoles (PS5 and Series X) can coexist in the same space. If Xbox goes with Nvidia for their next gen box along with a different architecture they MIGHT get folks interested again. I like my gaming PC but I much prefer the simplicity of consoles… that’s getting harder to justify when two years later you can play games at 4x the quality on PC :/
@codyv8737

What honestly turns me off to the console game, is the fact they’ve lied to us for years now with “4K 120”. They’re pushing this narrative, and it’s fell COMPLETELY FLAT… Triple A games are having a hard time pushing a locked 30fps. “Performance mode or Quality mode” is complete TRASH! We were ASSURED there would never be a compromise between performance and graphics AAAANNNNNNDDDDDD… let down again. Honestly about done with the console game and ready to invest in a PC build.

Both platforms, mostly due to Covid have extended support to last gen systems. Which are still pretty powerful systems, with only a handful of games from each only now being this gen only. Add to this global recession, kinda puts off many from a 5-600$ device ontop of $70 games. It should pick up again once full production of this gen games starts to hit, 2025. Looking forward to these new arm devices. Did you read about the new MS PC Manager? Recommends to have your PC repaired if Bing is not installed lol Happy gaming buddy.
@vullord666
@vullord666 4 ай бұрын
I don't even think its just due to covid. Gaming has just kinda peaked in terms of hardware and really devs are chasing artificial gains (which often results in real losses) for the most part. There are exceptions, but the vast majority and all the most popular games (like actually popular as in fortnite not just gamer popular like Alan wake 2) are still on Nintendo Switch not just XOne/PS4 and the Switch is weaker than both of those systems. There's a lot of elitism and gatekeeping, I think there's going to be a rude awakening in the gaming community in the near future. As Mobile hardware improves and we see apple put AAA games natively on iPhone and iPad (even if they're old and don't run great), it puts into perspective how pointless high end hardware for games is for the vast majority.
@nanopolymath
@nanopolymath 4 ай бұрын
@@vullord666 I get your point but I disagree that gaming has peaked. Considering most of the games we see today, began development before covid. Which has had an impact on the industry ability in roadmap & quality, leaving many titles delayed or patched later than expected. Top this off with all of the new capabilities within gaming, that’s constantly & vastly changing rapidly. Must be a nightmare for devs to not only get to grips with the tech but also choose which to implement & how it changes their game. Plus now AI has entered the building. Very long way off from gaming “peak” imho, we’re still only seeing the start. Pricing is also a huge factor, hard to justify $70 or if you’re Ubi $119 for games. Especially in comparison to F2P IP’s like Fortnite. Many just waiting on sales, hence the surge in last gen gaming popularity. Agree gameplay is more important than hardware pushing games. Though, each market PC/Mobile/Console has its own set of gamer’s expectations. Which first party wise, for both has been a little underwhelming & dry in the four years of this gen. Neither has hit its full momentum in desired output yet.

Second of it, there are more options now, we have stream consoles, android, portable devices, steam deck. We're into the thinking of a next gen. The new generation of console owners don't remember the Xbox One. They should see Series consoles as a turn back in the right direction. They got the studios, they got the games, so when a new generation buys their first console, Call Of Duty's new home is Xbox. Same with Fallout, and Elder Scrolls. There is incentive to buy into Xbox, especially as a first time console buyer.

Consoles are just not being supported by Sony and MS. The power of the Series X has never been shown and MS don’t care to correct this. MS is not in the console business anymore it’s pc gamepass. Sony never comes up with a single idea, they just copy and paste and that is killing their console trying to make money on pc. Plus the fact they got no exclusives till 2025, so folk see no need for a ps5. This is the Covid generation of consoles, they should just write it off and get ready for the next gen when whatever these companies are trying to put in place happens. Till then play your back catalogs and enjoy

The console market in general hasn't really grown since the PS2 days. There's a reason the PS2 is still the best selling console to date. That shows that the overall console market is just selling to the same fixed group of players each gen without much new growth. Many gamers also own at least 2 out of the 3 systems out there so there's also a good chunk of overlap in the user bases. The younger gamer gen is going mobile more and more, and even PC is a bigger market as gamers grow and have more money to play with. Consoles are quickly becoming a smaller 3rd piece of the gaming pie.

Right? I wish people would compare companies to their own success more than this tribal fanboyism where suddenly it's okay that Sony only sold less than 120 million PS4 units after 8 years when the PS2 sold 150 million in a six year lifetime because they still outsold Xbox. Nah, they're all doing very poorly. Xbox as well peaked in the 360 days at 80 million. The switch is the first on track to beat the ps2 and that's up in the air as it's lifetime comes to an end. Even then consoles don't cost that much and Apple manages to sell 200ish million iPhone 15s in the phones FIRST year at like 2 to 3x the price of consoles. And yeah there are payment plans but xbox and Sony have done the same. The more I learn about it, the more I feel the gaming industry doing poorly now could have at least been mitigated somewhat if people actually looked at consoles with an unbiased eye and not just for figures that supported their XYZ is better arguments. Really consoles have failed the industry and caused this. They were meant to bring in general audiences but only fragmented gamers and libraries (even within their own ecosystem between generations). Now publishers are faced with ballooning costs to reach unattainable expectations while in reality these games are getting pitched to dwindling populations. It's why they moved to squeezing money out through live service micro transactions, ect. And why mobile is so so much bigger. At this point I don't think the industry will be revitalized until the consoles die out or at least lose at lot of power. When PC becomes less expensive and more easy to access (like the steam deck pushes) or mobile hardware improves to the point AC MIRAGE on IPhone and iPad becomes the norm or cloud gaming and internet infrastructure catch up and we end up with a blend of the game pass and stadia models or an easier to use version of the Nvidia model.

@@marksapolloYes, but... the Switch is selling well because it's not only the cheapest of the three main companies' offerings, but it's also a portable and home system in one, whereas previously Nintendo's sales would get split between their home and portable lines. However: it's worth remembering that more people now game on phones, and the total number of Switch consoles sold to date is about how many smartphones sell around the world EVERY TWO MONTHS.

@@marksapollo I don't know... the Xbox One and PS4 base consoles first arrived in 2013. Smartphones were nowhere near as powerful then as now, so people certainly weren't playing console-quality games back then, but more casual ones. I doubt something like Genshin Impact would even have fit on the internal storage phones had then, let alone run! But my main point was: Switch is cheap and is like two consoles in one. Of course it has sold well. And of course it may overtake PS2 sales, as since then there are more gamers in the world so the market is bigger.

@vullord666
@vullord666 4 ай бұрын
Not really. The 360 was peak for Xbox, but the PS2 was peak for Sony, and I think the switch will be peak for Nintendo. But I do think you hit the nail on the head. The problem in general is that the console market is a fragmented mess. The only way they could push units is exclusives except even those exclusives weren't guaranteed to work on the next iteration of hardware. We're in a situation where consoles sell at cost or at a loss no more than 160 million units in their lifetime. And it's been going down since for everyone except Nintendo (and everyone except Nintendo are spending more in dev costs to reach unattainable graphics and massive open worlds). Consoles have never been anything more than niche because why should anyone buy one? When the one thing they do is game and there's no promise you'll get to play the games you buy on new systems in even the same ecosystem? From an outside perspective it's a mess. People complain about a future where they console ecosystem is open and hardware just features different launchers, but that'd be amazing and it'd be more than easy enough for console makers to streamline your library despite different accounts and storefronts (like my games I sideload on android still come up in the same app drawer as play store downloads). Frankly it's frustrating. Consoles have failed the industry. They're meant to be the front facing end that made gaming accessible to general audiences. Instead they fragmented it which lead to the rise of mobile gaming and live service and milking as much from one game as possible.

@@vullord666If you're going just by sales then sure, the PS2 was peak Sony. But the PS3 was where they finally had an online service similar to Xbox Live, and it also offered many their first Blu-Ray player. The problem with those numbers is people don't want to admit consoles as a whole have failed. You know what 5x Xbox consoles sold are? Less than a whopping 5 million. Last gen Sony peaked at less than 120 million sales. As a company they've yet to surpass the ps2 at 150ish million sales. To repeat the market leader has yet to surpass a peak THREE GENERATIONS OLD and it's not even that much. If only half of their user base is still on PS4 then that's a total monthly active user base still less than 120 and in their same earnings call monthly active users have gone down since last quarter (up YOY but, I mean that's not good; more of a sign of a bigger problem in the wider industry). For how much it costs nowadays those numbers are awful. Sony themselves know this which is why they're expanding to PC. Helldivers 2 is their best success yet and only because it's a day one PC launch, and Sony floundering trying to control that expansion. I've seen reports that no new people are buying consoles, but that's not even true. Less and less people have been buying consoles for over a decade now. And why should anyone buy a console? The market presents itself as making gaming accessible, but at its core it forces users to fragment their libraries in a standard where games don't even follow you (or aren't guaranteed to) when staying in the same ecosystem. Prices for hardware and software keep going up and the tribal fanboyism all three console makers pushed at one point (Xbox and Nintendo included though neither do anymore) led to constant gatekeeping in communities. Consoles on the whole are a failure and its their own fault. Xbox is pivoting first because they have the least clout and built up market share to survive the downfall. Sony is following close behind though. Nintendo is probably the only one that's fine and not because it's a breakout success, but because they control their costs and their users are used to paying more so their margins are better.
