4 National Championships with 3 HCs ... 2 Saban LSU and USC were both ranked #1 by two polls. This happened when the coaches poll was to determine who was #1. 3 coaches violated their contract and kept USC at the top of their polls. USC was ranked #1, LSU was ranked #2 Oklahoma ranked #3 but based on their strength of schedule OU was moved #1 SOS #11... LSU stayed at #2 SOS 29th and USC#3 SOS 37. A chance to test yourself against top teams/coaches week after week. It may be a grind but the team has everything needed for a championship run and when you put it all together against that brutal schedule it’s almost magical. Some people are built to want to compete like that. Kelly dove head first into the SEC grinder while Riley ran away from it.

There's a reason Notre Dame is disliked, to put it mildly, by many. Probably more than like Notre Dame. It's called arrogance. The faithful think Notre Dame is the end all be all of college football. That most certainly was true for decades. May be USC or ND. Hardly anyone has the history of Notre Dame football. History is the past. The last championship won at Notre Dame was 1988. In an era where the championship game was partly based on record and the rest was a beauty pagent. Who deserved to be in the game. Since the BCS Era Notre Dame was thoroughly out classed any time they got to the championship game or the playoffs. LSU has won three championship since the last time Notre Dame has won one. With three different coaches. It could be argued that LSU was a better job since 2003 and Nick Sabin's first championship. You could see how out classed Notre Dame was in the playoffs lately. And can see it in Brian Kelly's face every time a big play for the opponent happened. Kelly knew he wasn't going to compete in the playoffs with the teams from the south. The admission requirements, weather, location all have a factor. I'm positive Notre Dame gets stellar student athletes year in and year out. The overall better athletes come to LSU and other teams in the south. They're grades in High School may not be as good. But ohh can they play football. This is a bold move for Brian Kelly. Especially after LSU fired Coach O two years after that magnificent 15-0 championship season. No games will be given to him. The other coaches aren't going to walk away from recruits just because Brian Kelly is in town. He's going to have to perform, recuit, coach and work his tail off to be successful. He understands that, and is willing to do the work. He took over a Notre Dame program in shambles. Rebuilt the ship, won the most games in school history and left it in stelar shape. Now he wants his chance to compete with the likes of Nick Sabin and Dabo Swinney. He's given his all to Notre Dame, it's time to head south and get his revenge against those who beat him in the playoffs.

Money is the main reason. Notre Dame had a chance to match the offer and didn’t. Kelly’s getting 10 years, nearly $100 million. The rest of his entire life is now set. As far as National Championships go, I wouldn’t say LSU is in any better of a position than ND. Kelly now is in a cut throat recruiting battle with powerhouses like Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, etc. It isn’t going to be a walk in the park for Kelly to assemble an elite group of recruits. LSU also isn’t going to cut Kelly a ton of slack either. His introductory press conference said it right off the bat… he’s brought in to win a championship. If LSU isn’t winning big games FAST, Kelly’s goose will be cooked. Kelly at Notre Dame had a ton of time to implement his program and got to handpick recruits as an independent team.

People need to stop talking and use their brain, Kelly knows with his coaching chops at LSU with players who are in college just to play football, winning the National Championship will be easier. Alabama's days as the undisputed king of the SEC are over and it had to end at some point. Nick Saban who is now 70 years old now has an excuse to retire, Alabama's days of dominance is now on notice, everything comes to and end eventually.*

Everybody has always said the problem at ND winning a national title was their academic requirements. But maybe the real hidden problem is - they are cheap. They had a great coach and blew it, seemingly paying him like he was a management trainee. ND paid Kelly just a reported 2.7 million a year. Meanwhile coaches like Schiano at Rutgers gets 4 million a year. Franklin at Penn State gets 7 million a year with a 10 year deal. They do not come close to Kelly's fantastic record at ND. Kelly should have left ND a long time ago. Quinn and ND seem to want a management trainee as head coach that can still get 10 wins every year. They think it is a gift to coach at ND. If ND wants a real head coach this time, be prepared to pay a minimum of 8 million a year for 7 years. Good coaches know they can get that at a minimum. Should have paid Kelly. Good luck, Brian.

Add in that Irish Breakdown mentioned in a live stream that Kelly had pushed recently for better facilities among other things. ND complaining that he didn't give them a chance to counter the offer; sounds like he had already tried and was told no. ND clearly believes that the expanded playoff will benefit them staying out of a conference, I'm not so sure. Plus, ask Oklahoma how it feels to get into the playoffs only to get beat down by better competition every time. I understand the bitterness from ND fans and alum. I'd probably feel the same way. They're just not seeing that with the restricted requirements for entry, having to work twice as hard in recruiting all over the country, transfer portal, things shifting to super conferences...all of these things benefit other schools more and will make it even tougher at ND.

Brady Quinn has every right to question this decision by Coach Kelly.

Nah, bro. They're yesterday's glory hog. Notre Dame can't recruit anyone from anywhere anymore. They have a very real ceiling limiting them nowadays, and their administration refuses to invest fully into the football program to be able to keep pace with the Alabamas, Ohio States, USCs, Georgias, and Oklahomas of the world. Notre Dame hasn't won a national championship or produced a Heisman winner in over 30 years. They've only won 1 major bowl game since 1993. There's a reason for that.

With the internet and social media, all schools get massive amounts of exposure nowadays. The days of Notre Dame being the only game on TV Saturday afternoon are just a memory. The last 3 HC at LSU won a NC. ND barely makes the playoffs these days, despite being the media dying to have in the NC game every year. Last week, a friend of mine who is a ND fan, said that he was relieved...relieved because of Kelly's statement about not leaving ND, unless he's offered big money somewhere else. I told him, half-jokingly, maybe that was Kelly's way of letting some big time program with a coaching vacancy, that he would consider the job if the offer was substantial. My friend countered with "he wasn't serious," pointing out the fact that he mentioned some absurd number (250 million dollars, I believe). So I matched his counter with this: Just because he said that it would take 250 million, doesn't really mean anything. It could just be a hyperbolic number...meaning it was his way of saying that it would take a big bucks offer. Again, I was half-joking. I still don't know for sure if his statement last week was code speak, or if it meant that he was just making some kind of statement, and then changed his mind. It's interesting. When Kelly was coaching at Cincinnati, he did something very similar to what he said last week...made everyone think that he wasn't leaving, and then bolted for Notre Dame. There are a lot of Bearcat fans that are still quite pissed off about that. And it's been 12 years since he left Cincinnati.

Dude, that ND “academic standard” line is bullshit. Not attacking you, but I’ve heard ND fans back home peddle that crap for years. 1. ND’s admissions standards are not much higher than other college football juggernauts (ex. UGA and UMich have ACT scores only two points lower than ND) 2. ND offers scholarships to the same recruits that schools like Bama and Ole Miss do. There is no evidence that ND decides not to offer a 5* recruit a scholarship due to low (but still academically eligible) grades. 3. No football player is averaging ND’s median scores (same case at UGA). Does it matter that a recruit has a 20 or 24 ACT, if they’re still well below the 34 average? 4. ND players routinely score poorly on the Wonderlick and have the same admissions stats as players at other schools. 5. How are schools like Duke, UVA, Stanford, etc. competitive in sports? They don’t recruit grades. These 320 lb. cornbread bubbas for ND major in the same bullshit studies (“exercise science;” “communications;” etc.) that all players do
