I like the brisk pace of the first movement. I wonder if conductors just got too lugubrious or self-indulgent over time. The repeat makes more sense in this context and once your into the second ending and walk through a portal into F Major (in first inversion using A common to both home key and this)...you take in a whole new world.

I always enjoy hearing this orchestra play--they have an ensemble feel that is rather special. Ms. Alsop is a very experienced conductor and it shows; she always knew exactly where she was going in the piece. I've heard many renditions of this symphony, and this is one of the good ones.

A wonderfully organic performance from Frankfurt. Maestro Alsop really brings this music to life and the orchestra respond with their very special feeling of ensemble. I first heard this symphony on LP over 50 years ago but this lovely performance reminded me of just how this was "new" music once and made me listen to it again with fresh ears. Very enjoyable.

Of course the Frankfurt Radio Symphony performed magnificently and Maestra Marin Alsop conducted this amazing symphony brilliantly. All that goes without saying it. However, I wish to single out also for profuse praise the sound engineers, the videographers, and the video editors. The latter did an outstandingly intelligent job of cutting the tape to show players, section, and groups according the when & how they played. In my opinion, this was exceptionally unsurpassed, enormously moving and singularly enjoyable. Thanks so much, All!

This symphony is like a sunrise in the morning, in the green and bright forest, it's a German romantic poetry in times, where no acceleration of life takes place. Brahms for me is near Bruckner one of the most genius romantic composers. His ideas depends on polyphonic structures and harmonisations, which were sensational during his lifetime. The 2nd Synphony formed the basic to become the most important composer in romantic music.

I've seldom heard this director in action, only occasionally, but it seems to me that she's "hit the nail on the head." It helps that she chose one of the world's greatest composers and symphonies. Regarding the repeat of the first exposition: excellent! The composer wanted it that way, and Roger Norrington was the first director to my knowledge to "resurrect" it; now it's more often getting its due. JAT

Heart-warming to see and listen to such an ethnically varied orchestra playing so beautifully. I'm a retired professional classical musician with ~60 years experience playing in orchestras, and I can't agree with you. I really don't see much wasted motion on her part. Even though this is standard repertoire, the music is complex, and from a musical standpoint, rather difficult if you care about clarity and balance. She seems consistent and reliable in the ways that make players much more secure with the risks that we constantly have to take. I would even praise her for not doing what her teacher (Bernstein) did so often: She doesn't "steal the show" by acting out the surface "mood" of the music; she keeps a straight face and doesn't "mime" (something which the players only have to ignore, and generally despise conductors for doing). All in all I find this a dignified and well-thought-out performance on her part.

Alsop is 65. She is in the vulnerable age group for COVID. Looking at the sequences after the concert, it is so clear that whenever she walked through the orchestra where people were densely positioned, she was masking up. AND, she clearly took it OFF when she got on the podium where she had good-enough distance from people. She was simply looking out for herself. Even if it was a political statement, which I do not believe it is, it is HER FREEDOM to express it. One of the foremost American values Republicans flaunt. And she did it without impinging on other people's without any hypocrisy. To top it all, the mostly-unmasked European audience's applause deafeningly disagrees with your position. These days words like "Disrespectful" and "Hypocritical" are thrown without much forethought from both sides of the political spectrum.
