My first love was the clarinet. When I was a little girl I watched this video infinite times crying my heart out for such glorious music. Although I didn’t pursue a musical career, this instrument stuck with me through life. A coupe of years ago, I was holding a theater Master’s degree entrance exam at a prestigious university in Berlin. That very same day they told me I didn’t get in. So before leaving the city, I wandered through the halls of that historic building. Suddenly, I started hearing the melody to the second movement of this sonata. I followed the sound. When I found the door it came from, I read the following: “Prof. François Benda - Music Studio”. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I stayed for an hour hearing across the door how he tutored one of his pupils. Never saw him but it was more than I could ever wish for. My heart was full with nostalgia and joy. That was one of the most unfortunate but still fortunate days of my life.

Bach, Beethoven e Brahms. Grazie. Giuseppe Perego Monza

Stupenda interpretazione sonata op 120 nr 1 clarinetto e piano di Brahms

Brahms often stayed at the Schloss Elisabethenburg, in Meiningen. In fact it was there he was inspired, by the von Weber clarinet concerto and the Mozart clarinet quintet, to write his late masterpieces for the instrument, among them this sonata.

I’ve never heard the piano accompaniment played better than what I saw in this video. I include myself as one I’ve heard. I will endeavor to play it this well. Probably not gonna happen. But I’ll try.

I agree with your assessment of the pianist! Many yeara ago, I was desperate to play a chamber piece with an instrument other than violin, so I found this and began. I nievely underestimated the difficulty of the piece, but enjoyed every minute of fighting with it! I am also constantly amazed at how much better Brahms sounds in person vs a recording. Even more so than other composers!

Great playing!!! Interesting - a kind of French sound on an Albert clarinet? Anyway, who cares about stylistic traditions - great playing is great playing!

why the pianist looks so small?

Could it be that Mr. Benda is at least 6 ' 6" tall??

@@chokibert That's also why the clarinet looks so small, like an E-flat.

the empty hall sounds terrible. If this is in Meiningen, why are they playing on inauthentic equipment? Mühlfeld's clarinet is kept quasi next door. There are also excellent replicas at the correct pitch of 435 hz. I doubt that Brahms would have come out of retirement for clarinet playing like that. All that embarrassing body movement can't cover a quite disappointing listlessness. Listening to Leopold Wlach by comparison makes that quite clear.
