eighth note at 144 is not slow; they shape the sections and phrases within sections with a flexible pulse. Brahms himself, in his early career, at first printed metronome markings his scores (Requiem, for example) but soon deleted them from later printings.

yes, but how do you know how fast is an adagietto ore a vivace ma non troppo??, I mean he plays it like this cause of a reason, I like the tempo, also I can tell you some things you know that teh last movement of brahms violin concerto is markedallegro giocosso ma non troppo vivace??, but everybody plays it like an allegro apassionato?? almost and listen you can say that when is slow case anymusical reasons like it lost continuity but all tha phrases are great builded so I dont get your point
