Braids has a habitually underrated drummer. Some of the stuff this dude does is genius.

Even back in the Native Speaker/Lemonade days, the stuff he was playing was pretty complex yet tasteful as fuck. The drumming on “In Kind” IS INSANELY GOOD and is one of my favorite things to drum along with, same with this tune. It’s like Animal Collectives primitive non-drummer drumming + some tight jazz drumming with a heavy peppering of creativity and texturing. The more I listen and learn to play his parts, the more impressed I am and I am kinda hard to impress as far as drumming goes. I feel like a lot of his drumming ideas, other drummers would have left those sections empty or done something very simple, but he finds a way to take the most open ended sections and write a tasteful, technically difficult yet musically appropriate rhythm to it. Which is the entire name of the game. Any old chode can over drum through a part, or not drum at all, but the real masters find a way to service the music while never making it about their drumming, yet making it interesting enough to catch your ear. Whatever Braids drummers name is, he is insanely good at coming up with very musical, technical, great drum parts that are often quite busy, and other drummers can recognize as subtly badass, but somehow don’t outshine the total band until the moment calls for it. Which is rare indeed in pretty much any genre of music, but especially the folktronica-indie, synth wave whatever the fuck Braids is.

This is easily one of the best songs ever written by Braids. All in odd time, perfectly tangled melodies, her soaring crystal clear voice, and the final climax just breaks into your heart. Pure bliss.

I am getting Joni Mitchell vibes from this. Which is quite unexpected. I think it is the vocal phrasing and the sunny feeling of the intro. Very happy to have new music from Braids. It's been too long.

So the other chick from braids quit a while ago, and wrote an open letter to the other band mates saying they need to first take an “anti-oppression workshop” to begin mending their crimes against this chick. Good Gaia, faux-social justice is a cancer. It’s so deep it can infect bands as far down from the mainstream as Braids. Though they are Canadian left winger feminist types, so I’d wager they largely agree with these concepts, just when their applied to other people. Thought that was a bit absurd.

What a beautiful video. This song certainly is very cerebral, literal and poetic. Not your typical pop-song writing nor structure - it reminds me more of an orchestral piece, just building upon emotions. The vocal delivery reminds me of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and even a hint of Lou Reed. It’s story telling at its best, but not for the weak-at-heart.
