Listen folks, this episode starts off the rails with a claim that "bowling is the dumbest sport ever and Ricky Glaser mastered it in just 30 minutes", but we quickly get things on track, so like, don't even worry about it...
The heart of the episode revolves around Ricky's personal journey in skateboarding. From his initial aspirations to his eventual professional status, he reflects on how turning pro affected-or didn't particularly transform-his life. Ricky and Aaron Kyro discuss the evolving skate culture and how gatekeeping has changed as social media provides more accessible entry points for newcomers to the skateboarding community.
Taking a broader view, we explore the topic of skateboarding's inclusion in the Olympics. Ricky offers his perspective on whether this move aligns with the essence of the sport (wait, is it a sport or an art? A child's plaything?) and discusses potential impacts on its future. Shifting focus to the digital realm, we touch on Ricky's experience with handling negativity in KZbin comments, offering a glimpse into the challenges of dealing (or not) with online criticism.
Okay I guess this episode ends off the rails too because there's talk of AI world domination but like, just don't worry about that either. It's all good.

Ricky's comment about VR being the next 'drug' is very true. If corporations can figure out a way to hook people cheaply, they will do it. VR is the next wave of that.

Aaron is very good at this. This podcast will eventually blow up. 100% it’s coming. Aaron is just flat out good at interviewing. As long as he can get a variety of guests similar to nine club, this podcast will do well and grow. Good luck Kyro!

In kinseiology at the University I went to we studied Motor Learning. Part of what Ricky has really good motor planning and coordiation by being a multi-sport athlete growing up. When people bring up specialization for their child in 1 sport (or activity like skateboarding) I enourage them of the benefits of multisport strenght and balance.

I think getting more skaters to street skate would help with the surge. I'm 30 and got into it during the pandemic because I saw a guy ollie up a curb (I used so ride in college, but never learned tricks) and then the sudden urge hit to want to learn how to just ollie. Seeing skaters in the wild isn't common where I'm from in PA, but they're always at the parks, so kids and other people don't see them that often. Street skate more!

So I’ve typed out this comment so many times and never committed to it, but once again I’m new to stepping on a skate board and I’m 33 and it’s going okay a couple of my friends have started with me and its something I look forward to doing in my week. That said I’ve been a fan of skateboarding since playing the tony hawks games came out. I’ve known guys from school that skated and bmx but I particularly liked the street and free style elements of skating. The creativity is so wild and a part of me was always disappointed in myself for not giving it a proper go. At the time though I was a nerdy kid and I didn’t think I’d fit in so I chcikend out. skateboarding fashion came in and I saw my friends even those who weren’t skaters dressing like it. The look of a skate boarder had coverage through music scenes, street wear and various extreme sports and I always admired how in some sections of the industry skateboarding had seemed to out grow itself. But now that I’ve started skating and I’m starting street wear clothing brand (which is becoming more and more inspired by skating) I see the respect the skating community deserves you take a lot of bails before you land a trick and that dedication to craft deserves some respect. So I think skating should be and is getting more inclusive but those that are new should be respectful to all the hard work that has gone in to clearing huge gaps, and bailing out and celebrating every new combo and new trick created and landed along the way. Any way that’s just my thought for what it’s worth. Braille is sick it’s helping me all the time with my skateboarding and helps me to teach my son aswell 👊✌️🤘😀

You could do a video where you guys score everything the same way as they would be scored on tony hawk with a two minute run. Three spots braille house, freedmont and you guys pick a third. Add mini chalenges like collect skate, chug the jamba juice, rip stick something, smash a walmart board, ollie the magic kyro for extra points. If you want to make a video where your scoring tricks with a point system.

The more you do something the better you get. An artist is someone who doesn't know what they are gonna do or necessarily how to do it and experiments anyway. A craftsman is someone who knows what they are gonna do, how to do it and do it.

I do sometimes wonder if skateboarding brands could not invest a bit more in upcoming talent to keep the sport going strong. They were not really interested (or able) to invest into Ricky until he had enough of a following build up on his own. So now they were interested because they would benefit. There must be so many good skaters that have to move on in life and just skate as a hobby. I understand someone has to be able to bring something to the brand but if nobody is investing, growth might also be hard. And maybe don't want to wait for outside brands that bring in temporary money when there are big stars they can capitalize on. This is why local shops are so sick, they truly invest in so many people by the support they give all over the world. Investing doesn't just have to be money related but could also be help in creating a youtube, social media platform. Help with scheduling comps or help with street parts ect. There is a lot of knowledge that the industry knows but people trying to get into it do not.

I didn't watch it to the end yet but it sounds like @rickyglaser defines sports must be able to compete with others. For me a sport is if you work out in some way. So skating is definitely a sport. I'm in that's hard to judge because it's much about style. But sports don't need to be a competition. But maybe I did get it wrong.

@@rickyglaserthat makes sense too....but I wonder if anything is a sport with this definition. I mean with your skating you are entering and working out. With football or soccer it's the same. Ok you win medals or points.... but what's the purpose. I just didn't expect this. By the way I like your content very much. It's very funny and creative. Of course you are a great skater. I hope you reach your goals and always find new ones. Peace 😊
