The idea that Jackson made one film (this one) and then got offered Lord of the Rings is pretty funny! In fact, he had already made Bad Taste and Meet The Feebles, and would go on to make Heavenly Creatures and The Frighteners before LOTR came his way.

The best thing about the movie is the seamless cuts where you can clearly see the real actor and it switches to practical effects as their body is torn apart. Peter Jackson is a very skilled filmmaker, everything about the directing, the acting, the camera shots is deliberate and made with a vision.
@BattleGhul3 жыл бұрын
If you know what to look for you can see it, but it's hard to spot ^^ like a flailing arm passing in front of the camera to hide a wipe to the puppet getting its face torn off (which is actually amazingly close in resemblance to the actor). The jump cut of the girl getting punched through the head is pretty much flawless.

"Braindead" is a true genre / splatter classic. It's years ago now that Peter Jackson talked about his early movies being scanned in 4K from the original camera negatives, and nothing seems to have happened. His early works (including "Bad Taste" and "Meet The Feebles") definitely deserve a proper remaster and re-release on (4K) Blu-ray. These movies may not be perfect, but you can tell they were made by someone who loves what he does.

It was the film following this, Heavenly Creatures, that got Jackson noticed by Hollywood. That led to The Frighteners, following which he began chasing down doing a remake of King Kong. From what I gather Universal wasn't entirely happy with the box office for Frighteners and so they took a pass on Kong but cannibalized the script to use for The Mummy with Brendan Fraser.

There's a wonderfully zany, inventive and homemade quality to Peter Jackson's early stuff, that he lost to a certain degree once Hollywood beckoned. This movie is OTT fun, and I hope Jackson can return to this type of moviemaking some day. No bloated epics, no CGI or trying to win Oscars -- just low budget (and therefore unrestricted) fun. I think Heavenly Creatures (an amazing film) is the bridge between these movies and his later stuff.

Recently, Peter Jackson was making a documentary about World War I called "They Shall Not Grow Old" It is jaw dropping amazing. He not only colorizes the old footage of the war, he slows the speed of the footage down to its proper pace, so the action moves at a normal speed. He adds sound to the degree that he got expert lip readers to figure out what the soldiers are saying, finds out what company they were with, so that he can get an actor from that region to do the voice, so that the accent will sound proper. At one point a major is reading a prepared speech to the troops, and they found the damn speech so we could actually hear what the soldiers were being told at that moment. And the most amazing part (however I don't know how well the effect comes off on tv as I've only seen this in the theaters) he damn near perfectly converts 100 year old footage into 3D! In the theaters I couldn't believe how amazing it looked. The first scene where it switches over to 3D is in a destroyed forest where all of the trees are blown up stumps, and you could see the depth of the forest, almost to the point where it looked like you could've just stepped through the screen. It is a masterful achievement in documentaries, and well worth the watch

I really love the movie Bad Taste, too. His budget was so small that he used his mom's oven to make prosthetics for practical effects. And one time, he had his mom drop him off to the location he was going to shoot. But none of the other cast showed up that day, I forget the whole story. Anyway, without cell phones, he had to just sit around all day doing nothing, waiting for his mom to come back at the per-arranged time when shooting was supposed to wrap up, lol. He also acts in it. For what it is, it's actually a gem. Has some legitimately risky shots, too. Precarious situations.

Oh, you beautiful bros, you actually went and saw this movie. That makes me so very happy! And no, this does not get you the money to make LOTR. I think this was Peter Jacksons first movie with some proper external investment money and he worked up the food chain to two Hollywood movies. The Frighteners with Michael J. Fox and Heavenly Creatures with Kate Winslet. The latter was a solid drama based on real events with some fantasy elements. That gave Miramax (if I remember right) the confidence to give him the money for not 2, as Jackson proposed, but 3 movies to film LOTR. I always say this movie is about as funny as the amount of blood on screen. An absolute gem.

Peter Jackson made an excellent movie with Kate Winslet between this and LOTR, called Heavenly Creatures. It’s VERY eerie because it’s based on a true story about 2 best friends in New Zealand who kill one of their mothers when they’re going to be separated after having a creepy obsession with eachother. The real person Kate plays changed her name and is a crime/detective author now by the name of Anne Perry! Part of me wanted to bring the movie for her to sign when she was in my town for a book signing to see her reaction (she hates the depiction of what occurred btw) but I didn’t 🙃

I'm so glad you watched this movie! It's probably my favourite horror movie, I just love how it ridicules the genre while still being very entertaining. Everything is just so ridiculous, but it's all executed so well, that you can't help but get dragged in. It also uses cuts in a smart way, and there's just a ton of creativity everywhere. The only downside might be the jarringly bad acting, but I believe most, if not all of it is on purpose - but for the average viewer it might come off as just crappy. This movie is just full of Peter Jackson's youthful energy and ambition, and it shows. You seemed to enjoy it a lot, which I'm very happy about! I really hoped to watch this this Halloween season, but I couldn’t find it anywhere either, so thanks, your reactions were the perfect substitute.. not a market substitute(mind you) I just need to see the highlights since Iv seen it before...

By the way - this movie is why the "Looks like meat is back on the menue!" - scene in Lord of the Rings didn't surprise me that much. Where the orks tear the body of one of theirs to shreds. :D Also Nigel's mum is in the movie, she plays Bilbo's greedy cousin who wants to get her fingers on Bagend House.

The first movies of Peter Jackson were just bonkers. This film still holds the Guiness record for the amount of fake blood used. Can we just take a moment to RIP the Kung Fu priest who had very short, but oh, so memorable screen time. Another of his early movies worth watching is Meet the Feebles. A sort of Dark parody of the muppets where each muppet is a different animal and it touches such kid friendly subjects as: war, drug abuse, porn industry, forced prostitution, torture, murder, venerial diseases and mass shooting. You guys will love it.

This movie is definitely insane. The tone and progression are totally one of a kind.

Peter Jackson would be proud of your reaction watching this movie! I saw this masterpiece for the first time on VHS in the mid 90's and my friend started laughing hysterically and running around the garden, before returning to watch TV. Anyway, although I know this movie by decades, when the nurse turns back and says "your mother is dead" this made me laugh in insane way, just as much and in unison with you guys :))

Also see HEAVENLY CREATURES, arguably Jackson's finest film of all.

Your laughter had me laughing like crazy too, especially at that baby on the park lol

Actually, I think it was the artistry and sensitivity that Jackson showed in his film "Heavenly Creatures" that convinced people he was a director with the chops to take it to the next level. In fact, if you haven't watched Heavenly Creatures, YOU SHOULD. It's really an amazing link between Brain Dead and The Lord of the Rings. You can literally see the bridges forming between the two films. Remarkable movie.

One of the best zombie movies ever constructed... that I have absolutely NO desire to ever watch again, because it made me lose my appetite the first time (and it takes A LOT to do that, because I can say with no ego that I've seen some gory media). Also, "Party's over" is what I consider Lionel Cosgrove's Evil Dead 2 moment. Imagine Ash Williams kicking the door down to that crowd of zombies, chainsaw revving, shotgun in hand, and he says "Groovy". That's Lionel right here.

I was SO happy to see this video, it was lots of fun to watch. I've seen this classic many times, but not for awhile. Ah, the memories ... anyway, I loved watching your reactions! I think "Braindead/Dead Alive" can be pretty polarizing, so I'm glad to see you both vibed with it and really enjoyed this amazing gem.

To this day I still randomly shout out "I kick ass for the Lord!" In my worst kiwi accent I can manage.

Love this movie! When I invite friends over to watch movies, I show them this film because they have no idea what to expect and it’s always fun to see their reactions lol.

No. He made heavenly creatures and the frighteners, which are good, before he made LOTR. He was a bit more established than just from this movie. Another movie you could react to is a New Zealand horror comedy about zombie sheep called Black Sheep. Being from Wales I found it hilarious

First time I saw this was when I was in school, there are some parts I remember and some that I forgot. The final act is probably the craziest gore scene in a horror movie ever made. It's quite clever how they made specific bones and organs for the zombies tearing everyone apart and not just random stuff that no one can identify

I bought this movie at a horror expo in New Jersey in the late 90s. Wow!!!!! It was the best horror movie purchase I ever made. How impressed I was and still am!!! Thank you guys!!! Love your channel.

This has to be one of *the* best reaction vids I've watched. It's a crazy film and seeing both of your reactions to it is an absolute pleasure to watch. Keep up the excellent work, chaps! (by the way - PJ's latest project is coming out soon. He's produced/edited/restored a massive amount of never-before-seen footage of The Beatles, whilst they recorded their last album, "Let It Be". It looks phenomenal)

I used to watch this a lot when I was a little kid and then forgot it to time. My grandparents really did just let me watch whatever and they had lots of horror hence my love for the genre. I recall some years ago stumbling upon this film again and a whole flood of old memories came back
