I've been making this for quite a while now. Instead of water or stock, I braise the red cabbage/apple/onion mixture in apple juice with some cinnamon. It comes out absolutely delicious!!!

I make this dish on a regular basis! A couple thoughts. First, I recommend using a mandolin with the thinnest blade setting. The end texture is by far the best. Even when I do my best to make uniform angel hair ribbons with a chef’s knife, they just can’t quite match the texture I get from the mandolin. Second, I do recommend the addition of a pinch of clove, a pinch of caraway, and a pinch of celery seed. Go easy on all three, but you’ll be happy you added them. Finally, I add a knob of butter at the very end.

I'll be trying those spices, soon. Do you think I can sub green cabbage? (Out of red. ) I don't think it will be as sweet, but it would still be good?

@@melissajarvis4829 I did it today with green cabbage, juniper berries, cloves and caraway and it works. In my supermarket, they didn't have any red cabbage today, so I had to take green or something entirely else.

Thank you for this great recipe. I never thought of adding apples to sweet-sour cabbage. However, when my children were small, they used to insist on trying the foods mentioned in "Farmer Boy," the story of Almanzo Wilder. They would eat anything if it was something that Almanzo ate. We all loved fried apples 'n' onions, and still do.

This is a delicious recipe. Make sure you cook it low and slow once you've added all the ingredients and have cooked the apples and onions to translucency. If it's too liquidy for you use some a tsp of corn starch with a couple tablespoons of water. There's many German cooks making this on YT with different area's of the country for sweeter or sour recipe versions. Enjoy

Apple cider vinegar is very good with other cabbage recipes as well, there's one recipe that uses ACV, mayo, sugar, celery seed and can't recall if there was anything else but so good. I think it's called ( Seriously good coleslaw) on KZbin JoAnne and her husband makes it. It's so good.

Nice, I've always seen this recipe floating around and never tried to make it before and wow, I had no idea it was this easy. I personally love red cabbage and wish there were more recipes for it. Also, something I've recently discovered that is so easy to do is to steam sliced cabbage (or any vegetable) in my ricecooker tray while the rice cooks - maybe that'll help someone else start to eat more vegetables too haha

Red cabbage and apples is a better version when pickled in vinegar like sauerk. It's sweet and less sour and super refreshing. No onions in it either. It's bangin', better than warm red cabbage and apples by a mile. It's so much more refreshing. See till can use it as a side with pork chops

Pro tip: if you feel like your cast iron takes too long to heat up on the stove, put it in a cold oven and preheat to 375°F. By the time you finish your mise en place, the oven will have reached temperature, and your cast iron will be prime for cooking. =)
