This video is a lifesaver. I’ve always been poor at adjusting V or U brakes. Now I have a much better idea of what to do. The BT-2 tool is essential for this job. Thanks Park Tool.

Great video, I was able to easily diagnose and fix my u brakes after watching. I still have the original 5 piece park tool pocket tool I bought with my first BMX in the 90's, and used it to perform the adjustments needed. Thanks a lot!

What is a u brake? My friend said that means there is no brake so u have to use ur feet
@karlovuja3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonaskari well your friend is stupid. Thats means its the ubrake type, the brake system you are watching in the video. No brakes is called brakeless. Simple as that.

Can you tell me what brake this is? I can't find this model with the barrel adjuster.
@parktool4 жыл бұрын
That is a Black Ops U-brake. The barrel adjuster is at the lever on these styles, not at the caliper.

I’ve tried everything in this video on a new brake setup but they still won’t grab enough to stop me. I can pedal through when I’m pulling the brakes my hardest. Do you think it could be the brake cable just being a cheap one?
@parktool4 жыл бұрын
This style of brake on a BMX bike is notorious for bad braking. The design offers poor mechanical advantage. Good quality housing (stiff) can help a little. Just a new cable alone might help a bit, but don't expect a great stopping brake afterward.

How does a person quickly loosen the front U-brake to allow the front wheel to be removed, say for example, putting a bike in the back seat of a car prior to a trip?

can i swap out my linear pull v brakes for u brakes on my se big flyer?
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
No. The pivot for the V brake is below the riim. The U brake pivot is above the rim.

@@parktool so is there any other type of brake i can use other then the linear pull v brakes on my se big flyer? i dont want to switch it to disk.
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
@@silentsilence5785 You could go to Cantilever brakes but that would not be a worthwhile change. I would stick with linear pull brakes if you want decent stopping power.

My cable doesn't go back after a squize the lever on the rear brake The pads stay against my rim. Do you have any idea why that is?
@parktool7 жыл бұрын
Disconnect the cable at the caliper pinch bolt. Now move the arms by hand and see if the brake caliper spring seems weak or strong. If the arms feel normal, the issue is in the cable and housing.

I've got a vintage mountain bike from 1988 that has a Shimano Deore U-brake under the chain stays. It has a short straddle cable that the main brake cable pulls on with a yoke to apply the brakes. Will a BMX U-brake work on this bike? It looks like the straddle cable doesn't have a quick release method.
@parktool4 жыл бұрын
The mounting system is the same. The common BMX brake does not use the straddle wire, and that gives them horrible leverage. It might fit but avoid it if you can.
@trigonzobob4 жыл бұрын
@@parktool Thanks for the advice. I got the Shimano working again. The notch in the adjusting washer was worn and the tension adjustment screw was probably slipping under it and lifting it up instead of rotating it to increase tension. I ground the washer notch flat and the brakes now work again. I just got done with an hour long ride and now it's time to use my favorite Park tool - the BO-1. :)
