I just bought an identical one of these testers and I was worried about how accurate they may be and I just want to say thanks for taking the time to do a accurate test of these devices, it's nice to see how accurate the readings are and quite reassuring to see they are surprisingly accurate. I appreciate your taking the time to make this video.

Thank you for this great video. I went on line looking to see if I could test my brake fluid and “voila”,there you were. No crazy music, just a perfect demonstration of what I was looking for. I as well as most people have never been educated in the importance of knowing how brake fluid gets contaminated and how it can lock up brake pistons and also causing poor braking. Just one thing to mention, these are very basic testers as I have just got one myself. By more expensive ones can also measure the boiling point they do cost a lot more but handy to know if your brake fluid can't handle the heat so to speak. With large vehicles boiling point is also a big factor in braking profomace. Very good video quality and great to see.
@vladsoare8577
@vladsoare8577 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, but the boiling point is directly related to the water concentration. If you know the latter you can infer the former (assuming you use high quality DOT-compliant brake fluid, of course).

Fine job! I'm not much on all these flush services that are pushed on people till they can be tested as bad. I bought one of these testers about 3 years ago and tested all four cars in the driveway. They range between 2008 and 2016. After Toyota tried to push their flushing services on me again, I thought I'd get my handy tester out again. Turns out all the three older Toyotas were fine at 1% and my 2016 Challenger has 2%. Think I will get that flushed next fall service. This is a simple little tool will give peace of mind and potentially save a hundred bucks.

Nice bench testing, it was very clear and concise. As far as the on car testing is concerned, you'd do well to pull a bit of fluid from each caliper/wheel cylinder as well to get accurate hygroscopicity data where it's most likely to affect braking.

Great test, important that you used a "control sample". I am a garage mechanic and work on my own and friends vehicles. I have a couple of these pen moisture meters. What I have found is that some are very accurate and some are junk, kind of hit and miss. So now I have a more expensive kind ($50) moisture meter which I use ALONG with Phoenix Systems brake fluid dip strips which measure the amount of copper in the fluid. By using both of these tests in combination, I can be quite confident in determining the condition of the brake fluid. Thanks for posting your video!

Wonderful testing procedure with one exception. You say you put in 9.7, 9.6, etc ml accurate down to .1ml but you're using a syringe which is marked in .2ml . Because of that your test result could be off by a percent. If you had used the tiny syringe 10 times then you'd be more accurate. But since you're getting the right results presumably you were very accurate in the use of the .2ml markings. But when you went to the car and looked into that reservoir I don't care what the tester says, that fluid looked too dark. You also have to worry about copper contamination and you didn't test if the pen will detect that.

@@screwsnutsandboltsI was going to say yes, but then I realized what you might mean. So I rechecked with only the very tips dipped into the new brake fluid and it showed less than 1%. So you are right. This is probably why other people also reported inconsistent results. Kinda a design issue - if the dips are made shorter, variations should be reduced. And this trick is not written anywhere on the website package or pen. Actually I also tried the multimeter method last night after knowing it, which to me is a better method for average persons. I am still proceeding with my return, unfortunately. Paying close attention to such details in a awkward position on the hoods is not an attractive option for me.

I have a question. If with the glass of brake fluid and water you had to stir the mixture to make sure the percentage of water was equally distributed, inside the brake circuit in the vehicle you might have the water in the lower point (as water is havier than oil), close to the brake calliper so I doubt the pen will be able to detect the issue even if in the reservoir there is non trace of water.
@ClutchKickerNation

brake fluid is hydroscopic it absorbs the moisture and does not separate. the reason he needed to stir the test samples were to disperse the water throughout the sample of brake fluid to allow it to absorb

I also had in my garage opened brake fluid and it stays there for years (5-6 years for sure) and it was opened from time to time. Because of my curiosity I bring the fluid to a car tehnical inspection station and the guy there told me "this is a brand new oil, right?", I answer "yeah, for sure". Boiling point of an opened 5-6 year old brake fluid was 236 Celsius, like brand new. It takes moisture, that's true, but pople like to overreact and you will hear a lot of times "once it is opened, unused oil is for garbage". Of course it's not true!
