Great video and thanks. I was looking for this kind of video for this bike. I was thinking what is the best offer on the market (including all these features)... And realized with some upgrades this could be perfect bike for on&off road trips. My only concern is... Would it be better to wait for Yamaha T7(I think it would be much more expensive than vstrom)? What is conclusion, can we do an off road with this bike (off coarse not serious as with AT)? I’m tall 1.88 cm, what do you think? Do I have to replace standard with higher seat? Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you mean by 'its just not an adventure bike at all'... lets see.... Can it go off pavement and into gravel/dirt/grass? Yup. Can it climb rocky hills? Yup. Can it go through mud and water? Yup. Can it haul a pretty hefty amount of gear for a trip? Yup. Can you explore with it? Yup.... I'd say that's an adventure bike alright. And lack of personality? I never understand what people mean by this.... how can it have a 'personality' or lack there of? Like.... if you mean how it handles when offroad, then just say it doesn't handle well off road, although it handles amazingly. if you mean that when it is offroad you can't tell that you are, then wtf are you complaining about? you don't want to feel like you're gonna die going around a dirt/wet corner... The bike has loads of power, sounds pretty damn good even with a stock exhaust, has a really good hauling capacity, is highly maneuverable, has a pretty large availability of aftermarket parts for people who want to make the bike "their own", its freaking reliable as HELL.... it doesn't break easily when you slam it down either... I'd say its damn near one of the better bikes out there... Its cheap, meaning if you do manage to break something on it, you can fix it cheaply and easily. You don't have that horrible 'fear' of 'omg i'm gonna lose all my money cause i scratched the paint!' with it either. its lighter than most of the super expensive adventure bikes, and handles better than them as well. A bike that does nearly everything, quite wondrously well, is definitely a bike worth having verses a bike that does only offroading super well, or climbing super well, or cornering super well.... an all rounded bike is what you want... not a bike that can only do 'one thing'.... that's the point of an adventure bike....

yes but it's not flashy, it's not the latest thing, it doesn't have the latest tech, fancy lcds and a gazillion riding modes that you have to hack through to get the feel that you want, it doesn't make you feel important for spending more that what a decent small car costs.... but yeah, I'll enjoy my '19 650 XT to it's full extent and be happy that such a bike still exists today.

While everyone has their own personal preferences, the V-Strom happens to be my favourite bike. I think its grand that you selected it as your project bike! All of the upgrades seem to be spot on, too. Although, I'm not as keen in the choice of tyre. Especially when doing long treks on asphalt, pavement, or concrete. It wears you down. (I understand that your goal is all-round versatility, though)

Looking good so far for a budget upgrade, at least its a good improvement on stock and without spending loads on suspension that leaves luggage, seats and possibly lighting.That said for a tight budget you could change the springs out and/or fit a valve kit, it would be interesting to see where you go with this.Maybe you could do a used bike budget build too? Oh and maybe a video on correct suspension set up.

Just bought mine 8 weeks ago. Do about 1000km per week. Ride to work and have options of 100% sealed roads or 90% gravel. 60 yo without little off road experience. Ride a bit on shallow sand. That is the only thing that really bothers me. Plastic engine gaurds ok because i never ride on anything too rough- at the moment. Live in Aus so LOTS of gravel. Will upgrade tyres when these are worn. Bought it for the traction control and it handles two up well. Lovin your foot pegs. It does say Adventure but it also says Sports Tourer. Balance is pretty good for me. But no Simpson Desert! Cheers.

I think what he meant to say was; This bike is the best priced ADVENTURE bike out there and it is superbly appointed for that price, so much so that we can afford put all this extra bling on it and still be under what other not so nicely appointed bikes cost... You'd still have to do all the same things to any of the other adventure bikes out there which would almost get you two of the V-strom by the time you're done outfitting them as well.

Great mods. Only thing I'd do different is the tire selection. I run Shinko 804/805's on my '06 Vstrom 1000, and they ROCK. On road. Off road. Dry. Wet. And they're MUCH less expensive! Tire wear? I get almost 9k miles on the rear (I ride aggressively on the street), and at the rear tire change the front still has more than 50% tread left. Wish Suzuki made those foot pegs for my Strom!

Would love to see the progress on this. Some have mentioned better suspensions and hopefully the ones you choose to fit won't cost a bomb. I personally would like to see if the v strom can be made lighter so it'll handle easier and fly faster too, notably to keep up with the bigger bikes on long straights. Cheers.

Do seat, lights , horn and bash plate. As if I would ever want to ride a Vstrom between trees. Gravel roads are the extent of sensible touring on a Vstrom. A WR250r makes the most sense for touring and off roading. The Vstrom is great at what it was built for.

nice bike, nice piece. My 2007 DL 650 has had some of those mods. I prefer the PIVOT PEGS to anything I have ever used. The DL 1000 uses rubber mounted bars, so I am using the upper triple clamp. Production values, please mind your wandering eyes. It appears you were distracted by reading cue cards that were too far from the camera. You looked stage right and over the camera a bit too much. Some of your edits of seated talking were easily noticed. I'd encourage you to retake that section as a whole, not splice in a 2nd take, not without a change in angle or view. Keep it up, bring us more. I want to see the bike after the trip to the Alps, ridden hard and put up wet.

Hey guys found this project and my only regret is that it's such a small episode with almost no images from the mods you made.You refer all the modes but it's hard to perceive the final looks (at least for me).Also, my biggest question is, what can we do about suspensions without changing to much the sweet riding on road?The stock suspensions are clearly week for off-roading and they reach the end of its course real easy...Final question, when will next episode be out?Thank you guys...Subscribed your magazine by the way...thumbs up.

OMG !!! That's tuff luck ...but facing the mods you made I can understand the robbers, I'd steel the bike too ;-). I own a V-strom 650XT (2017), yellow too. I'm eagerly waiting for those suspension suggestions too, but when you do please explain what the advantages are and disadvantages (if any) by doing those changes, because 90% of my riding is on tarmac...although it could be less if I felt I had a bike for that. Thx once again, Cheers.
@seanfinlayson3943
@seanfinlayson3943 Жыл бұрын
It's all well and good and I can see you're trying to 'Rally Raid' the 650XT... However, in the real world, most of us who choose this bike are not going to riding hard off road on it. A few grassy and gravel trails at best. If we were going to be going seriously off road, we'd use a used Tenere 700 or a CRF 300 Rally.

The sump guard has to come off for an oil change but it's not super complicated to do 😊 Luggage, you'll have to wait and see 😏

Take a look at the T-Rex Racing Skid Plate. The skid plate does NOT have to be removed to change oil and oil filter.

All well and good, but why toss the parts we pay for to replace them with better parts? Imagine buying cars like that? My most recent ‘Strom (I’ve owned three) has more than $3000 worth of farkles. I’ve also ridden over 170 000 kilometers through tundra, deserts and jungles on my ‘Stroms. At the end of the day I still love the engine, but the law of diminishing returns kicks in as the cost of better parts rises. I can’t see buying another ‘Strom unless there’s more factory installed options at the point of purchase. Suzuki should offer (like Honda & BMW & Triumph) upgraded models: better suspension, brakes, exhaust, throttle by wire (cruise control) touring packages and the tweaks mentioned in this video. Did I mention I love the engine? Leave that alone - it’s fine just like it is!

I am with you. I have a '13 650 and had to do a bunch of stuff to make it ready. I don't even want to add up all the money I spent. I started with the "Adventure" model, which for '13 means it has crash bars, racks, and a taller wind screen. Even so, I had to add a bash plate/sump protector, hand guards, aux power outlet, bar risers, new wind screen, soft luggage, knobby tires, and a radiator guard all before even my first expedition with it. Then I found the other stuff that needed to be done... If you hit some types of mud you'll want a bigger gap between the front fender and the tire; more grip on the foot pegs, especially around mud. But I think the biggest issue is the suspension and ground clearance. Generally weak suspension isn't surprising for a bike at the price point, but the fix can be expensive, and I don't even know if it is practical to fix the ground clearance, which is perhaps the lowest in the class.

Don't want to sound like a dick, but SW-Motech parts are just as good and cheaper than the ones mounted now. For those still in search ;-) Cool project - when can we expect part 2? I'm in the process of buying a Suzuki V-strom 1000 ABS and plan to build it up like this, too.

Wait a minute... you could've saved yourself a lot of trouble making it more off-roadable just by buying a Triumph Tiger or Honda Africa Twin to begin with.
@BrakeMagazine
@BrakeMagazine 6 жыл бұрын
😂😂 Maybe, but they're hugely different bikes. I don't disagree they're better off-road from the start. However theyre taller less easy to ride and more expensive. An Africa Twin is £3700 more expensive and way less friendly. The Triumph is also a fair bit more expensive and ultimately they're different bikes. 😊 The V-Strom has a lot of merits that people like 😊

Nice video and looking forward to the rest of the series. but it sounds like you’ve spent too much time with your german friend calling this is a budget build. Ive never had a go at a strom. Everyone who has swears by them. Whenever i see the new model it looks heavy and wide. But maybe it’s not?
