Who came up with ATVI? I never heard of this term. In space sims, we usually call it a retrograde marker ('retrograde velocity vector marker').

Well, CIG calls it the ATVI. It stands for Anti-Total Velocity Indicator.

This is where the LookAhead option "Look Towards Velocity Vector" is really really useful for those of us without TrackIR. Because it makes the view shift towards your TVI indicator. Sadly it does not look towards your ATVI when attempting to brake. Perhaps in the future, CIG can implement some smart logic so it tries looking at your ATVI if you're facing it and reducing velocity.

Should you be doing this manually? Are there computers you can program to automatically set flight paths etc.?

I’m quite new to this and it’s quite confusing to tell what your doing exactly since there aren’t any obvious reference points besides the far away asteroids..

Well the problem is...it is not logical. Angling the main thrusters off center in favor of smaller, less powerful ones, is not how you would do it. If I am thinking correctly, it would IRL result in less braking thrust

Thats what I think too because by angling you will exchange main thrust for sub thrust

@@benjaminrennicke you're entirely correct, and that is how it works in game too. aiming directly at your retro indicator and burning perfectly backwards with your main thrusters pointing forwards is the most optimal way to do it unless your ships most powerful engines aren't on the rear for some reason.

@@patton333 No, I'm sorry, that's incorrect and part of the main message of the video. Like it or not, you actually benefit from angling slightly. The reason why is because when you are angled you can use thrust from **all** your thrusters, including your mains, not just your mains.

@@benjaminrennicke You don't exchange, though. That's why it doesn't work the way you think. Adding more thrusters simply adds more thrust. It doesn't have a tradeoff.

@@LegacyFleet If you angle the main 90° there is zero (!) deceleration, if you angle it 45° there is 50% deceleration. If you angle the main thrust out of the main axis you loose deceleration of this thruster, the more you angle it, the more you loose.

Hey, this was amazing. The music was awful though. It was a.little too fast and I feel it would have been better if a bit quieter

I don't know why I'm still confused, sorry. I get the flipping to look for your tvi indicator part, but to "counter-thrust" if I was using m&kb is counter thrusting (in that scenario ofcourse) going to me holding down space, w, and a with shift?

Yup, strafe toward your ATVI. This is instead of not strafing at all and just letting coupled mode stop you, which was just as good previous to 3.10.

Is it a big difference to just hold x(space brake) and rotate as thrusters get hot to maximize all thrusters and spread the heat around

Sure, but in coupled mode pressing spacebrake is the same as simply stopping your strafe. . . which means you won't be able to counter-strafe and the ramp-down jerk will affect you. And in decoupled, like I said in the video, you can't use spacebrake without using afterburner, which means in many ships you might overheat.
