I think it's great that you guys stopped and turned around. I am just starting my offroading journey and it is something I am keeping in mind. If either myself, the Jeep or the tires are not able to do it, then I will be stopping and turning around. As Roman said it, it's supposed to be fun. 'need' is relative, I think. Probably good to have all that stuff on kelly flats. That said, you could do nearly as well with BLD, cooper discoverers at 20psi, and a couple of 18MM wrenches to 'manually' disconnect the sway bar.

True, but you also made my point. The Coopers and manually disconnected sway bars are off road traction tire and disconnecting sway bar. 😃 Yes the Wrangler BLD is pretty good but lockers would make the vehicle’s movement smooth and much safer. They will do really well just with a good AT tire. I think Tommy’s mistake was the tire. His idea of stock “cheap” Jeep being very capable is still valid.

I’m running an almost bone stock ‘98 XJ on 29’s with a 2” budget puck lift. Shit just goes where some built jeeps struggle. It’s more about being smart than spending $20K+. I’m terrible at off roading so I could only imagine what someone who knows what they’re doing could do.

@@scotto9712yeah, I have a Sport (rear Dana 44 and LSD) that I’ve been building up over the last 3 years. Started stock with some mild AT tires. Put a spacer lift on and then 35s. Then regeared and did a true suspension llift after that. Then a steel bumper and winch. All the while doing 2, 3, 4 rated trails. Haven’t done a 5 yet. Working my way up, developing skills along the way. Gonna replace my cheapo shocks soon and want some better underbody armor before I do some crazier trails.

I enjoyed this video quite a bit. I'm not an offroader and recently bought a big bend bronco as my second car. Watching Tommy fail to an extent with that base Wrangler teaches me a lot more about what I could expect from my Bronco than watching him engage lockers and go over an obstacle. Failure always teaches more than success.

I was actually impressed with what you did on the stock jeep. A "9" rated trail is not a fair match for almost any stock vehicle, especially with smaller, stock street tires, and no factory lift. If you gave that thing some good all terrain, larger diameter tires, a 2" lift, and manually disconnected the sway bars - it would go a lot of places.

Don't use MORR as a benchmark of driving and recovery skill. They are ok, but make mistakes as often as they get it right. Of the youtube recovery channels the only one I truly respect is Rory at Trailmater. That man has legitimate skills and shows it regularly. As an example, when was the last time you saw him use a kinetic strap in a static recovery? Can't remember him doing that. MORR? Yeah, every time.

What this shows is exactly where not to take a stock Jeep. So as an example of this, this is great. Because some individuals will buy a Jeep like this with unrealistic expectations of where they can go and thus get in trouble on the trails as a consequence. Having a Gladiator Sport, I was able to get up just about anything CO through at me without issues... However, while I had open diffs, I made sure to get a 3.5" Lift, Sway bar disconnects, and BFG KO2 - 37's, to make sure I consistently had good contact with the ground and the clearance to not worry about obstacles. The few times I picked up a wheel I had the traction to keep me planted where I wanted to be. Tires, Articulation, Clearance. In that order with a sport.

good build, i did the same but 2.5 and 35s, and really, it just ended up being too big of a truck for my tastes off-road and I'm back to a 2 door sport again. One thing I would recommend to people that has been amazing are Eaton Truetrak LSDs front and rear. Its like having an automatic locker that only works when you want it, and I only get a tiny amount of binding on pavement when turning full left or right.

I had a JL sport with 35x10.50x17 and rubi shocks along with sway bar disconnects, also picked up some rock sliders off a rubi… I put over 50,000 miles on it with in a year and made memories I’ll never forget!!

I have this exact build out but in a 4dr. I’ve done some things to make my life easier but fellas… the difference a disconnected sway bar makes is incredible. Yes you have to get down in the dirt to do it on a sport but this would have been a much different video. Just my two cents, don’t hate me please. Also love the content you and your dad do. When he told Tommy to back up and go driver on that first obstacle, how many people were yelling at the screen that he was going to slide off that passenger side rock?

@@RobRoyRoadie Hi, James here from the video (guy in the red shirt). The camera angle isn't doing any favors here to show you how to line up the truck. The issue on this obstacle was that there was a deep notch directly under the center line of the truck between that high rock on the passenger side and that later rock on the driver side. Too far toward that passenger side and you won't come up the middle of the rock on the driver side. Back up to 5:27 and you can see the FJ come right up the same line I'm trying to put Tommy on. The Jeep's main issue here was tire traction, the passenger side line would be perfect and it would slip off toward the driver side. The FJ has a front locker -- not sure if it was on -- which probably helped to keep it from slipping, but the Jeep's tires just weren't holding it on a steady line coming up the obstacle. Perhaps a front locker with these same tires would have kept it more stable than the BLD (brake lock differential) applying ABS, but I suspect that it wouldn't have made enough of a difference. I fully expect we'll head back up there once they put a better set of tires on this thing. My 4Runner did everything that day unlocked / ATRAC on, which is the same as Jeep's BLD. I've seen a lot of Jeeps in Colorado do amazing things without a lift / giant tires -- Charles Wells who makes the FunTreks guidebooks wheels a TJ on BFG AT 32's -- but you gotta have more tire than this one does.

I totally understand how Roman feels. I could enjoy watching anyone tackle a wildly difficult trail in a vehicle outfitted nowhere near the capability required and it'd be exciting. Way, way different when it's your only son. Great video guys!

Great video! Backing down is more dangerous than going up in many situations. It was a very good idea to attach the winch line for safety. If you were alone, it might have been better to go up and find a spot to turn around. So much of this depends on the specific situation.

I prefer to buy this jeep, just as it is (30K base price, no thrills) and let ME build it up so it can tackle this and other trails......I don't need the 60K 70K 80K add on......Awesome Roman, keep it safe!
