I actually listened to Brand New to cope with being sexually abused throughout my childhood. Somehow, when the news broke, I felt nothing. No devastation, no tears. Like I had sympathy for the victims, but the music felt no different to me. I don't know how or why, but that's just how it went down for me.

@issaacxxx6202

The Taking Back Sunday drama was extremely exaggerated. Yeah, John Nolan and Jessie got into a fight over a girl, but here's how it happened; Jessie liked a girl. John made out with her at a party they were both at. (He didn't sleep with her.) and Jessie got mad and both artists wrote songs about it. John and Jessie made up shortly after and John even helped out on some of Your Favorite Weapon.

I will never understand the whole “feeling betrayed” feeling. Name me one time Jesse has claimed a moral high ground. Everyone who feels like they’ve been betrayed, remember, YOU put Jesse in a position where you thought he should’ve been better. He has never done that. In fact, what makes this case so different and what makes the fans outrage so unjustified is precisely that Jesse has never pretended like he was someone better or someone good even. I remember not even knowing the name of any band member for the first years I’ve listened to them. They don’t put themselves on their artwork, their names aren’t even really highlighted in the booklets. Only after I went out of my way to look them up, did I find out what Jesse looks like. I listened to this man sing about his regrets, his self-hatred, and his inability to move on for years and that’s what I love so much about the music. And then the news break and suddenly everyone’s like “Jesse I thought you were better than this” and feeling betrayed. That’s your own fault. You put him on a pedestal that her never put himself on. He did quite the opposite honestly.

Brand New got me through almost ALL of my tough times. It's almost as if every time I faced a hardship I fell back to them. Blasting their albums at all hours. They were like spiritual guides for me, allowing me to feel how I should. It obviously is terrible what happened, however I'm more than sure hes changed. It was well over 10 years after the events happened that it all came out. He was in his early 20s, when it broke he was in his mid 30s. Anecdotally, I'm 26 and I'm not even close to who I was when I was 20. Every aspect of my life is entirely different- for the better. Tack on 10 more years to that. Theres alot of room for change, then imagine being THAT drastically different. Gaining a wife. Kid. Family. Stability and becoming established. Finally settling down knowing all your efforts have paid off.......then losing it ALL because of something that happened literally 40% of your life ago. It amazes me. I still love them. Always will.

As a victim of abuse myself, Brand New, specifically Jesse's writing, has gotten me through some of the toughest times of my life. Even now as a grown man I'll still go back to Deja, and The Devil, and God when I'm feeling down. Not many bands can harness the emotion and somehow put it into lyrics. Science Fiction is one of the best albums ever written. Nothing will change that. Just like Louis CK, Jessie's allegations were known by fans well before 2017; I went into this album knowing that. I believe Science Fiction is a reflection of Jessie's guilty conscience. Like a not-so-subtle Freudian slip, planted within nearly every lyric (e.g. "Lit Me Up" & "It Could Never Be Heaven"). It is--by far--the band's darkest, most honest record, which makes it a macabre masterpiece.

I remember when the news was out and Brand New crumbled. Everyone was shocked and appalled at what Jesse was accused of. I remember reading his statement and analyzing every bit of it. Not many saw it as a fit apology, and I understand why, yet at the same time I could see what he was trying to convey. Nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes big or small. His words, while not detailing what it was he did, did have a level of sincerity still, but at the time everyone was so shocked and angry that it didnt matter. I was more in defense at the time, and I still am. One cant change their past actions, nobody can. But he sought help after realizing his actions hurt not only those he directly affected, but those around him. He didnt ask for forgiveness, but rather stated that he needed to earn it. Now do I still listen to them? Hell yeah I do. Do I separate the artist from the art? Its impossible for me, especially after going back through the catalog for a deep listen. I knew going in that some clues were ringing with lyrics, and surely enough if you listen you can find them. The alleged incident occured roughly around the time of Deja Entendu, and notably on that record and further were a lot of cues with his writing that spoke on the issue without directly addressing it, as well the hurt and regret of his actions following. You can hear and feel it coming through, it comes from a dark place. Thats what has kept me from holding a resentment against him or the music. Brand New has had a strong impact on my life, especially at times when I've been too close to the ledge. Whatever truly happened in his past is in the past and cannot be changed, and I will never deny that it happened. I just know that as much of a crushing note it was that ended them, I will always love the art created and will continue to listen to it and inspire me in my own art. Fight off your demons.

I'm 33 now, and went to high school in the early 2000s. My friends and I were into the "pop punk" scene... Blink 182, Good Charlotte, Taking Back Sunday, New Found Glory; the typical emo stuff. I really loved these bands... but I just can't listen to them now. The songs about breakups and fights with friends seem so childish now that I'm a grown husband and father. But Brand New is a different story. Deja Entendu felt like it opened my eyes to the weight of the world, and helped me mature. The songs had a weight and meaning that I just couldn't find on Dookie. They literally changed me. Fast forward a few years to 2007 and I'm now living alone and uncertain about my future. I listened to The Devil and God... and again, I felt like it changed me as a person. I had never heard music about the personal relationship with God, and faith, that affected me so much. The pain and grief that comes with living separated from God, being a man of this fallen world, and dealing with travesties and tragedies. I can genuinely say it sparked a rejuvenation in my faith in Christ that I maintain to this day (and always will). I know very little about the artists and their personal lives. All I know is, Brand New created two albums that helped me mature and grow into the man I am today. For that, I will always be thankful.

I love them despite the controversy. This isn't a new story when it comes to the "tortured artist." In my experience, artists are at least as flawed as any other human. Listening to his lyrics makes that point extremely clear I think. When I look back at all my own actions throughout my life and those of the people I've known and loved, I have to understand nobody is only as good as their worst moments. Right? like lyrically, i wasn't really surprised to hear the allegations. And honestly, his behavior was how most guys acted in the dating scene during that time. I think a huge part of it was the growth from technological advancements. Men slowly discovering horniness and the ease with technology and now the repercussions. And all young guys rarely realize the damage they're doing to young girls. And young girls never realize how young they were until they're older and wonder why they let some guy get away with treating them like trash for so long. *shrugs* People on all fronts just have to improve, hopefully the next few generations will be admirable. Brand New is still painfully beautiful, and should still be respected.

When I was getting into Brand New was within the months before the allegations. I remember the day the article came out and everything was a mess and I never knew who to talk about it with. In my experience, I was able to separate the art from the artist but it was mostly due to the fact that my connection with Brand New was still fresh and this band wasn’t just Jesse Lacey. These days I still listen to them, but there’s still that feeling deep down of disappointment for lack of a better word. Honestly, thank you for making this, there weren’t many videos that discussed it in an open way and I respect that you took it upon yourself to do just that. It took me a while, but I still listen to Brand New. There will never be another band like them in my life, and no one's music speaks to me in the same way theirs does. They've had an impact on my life I can't really explain and Deja Entendu changed the game in so many ways for me. As a super selfish fan in that case, what's always hurt me the most (apart from the betrayal type of feeling) was the fact that I never got closure. I was supposed to see them a few days after the allegations came out, and I entirely knew it was going to be my last time seeing them. Very obviously they cancelled the tour, and my last time seeing them ended up being them as a support band and me missing part of the first song because the guy selling me my ticket turned up late. (I have probably completely idealised what "the last time seeing Brand New live" would be like). And I know we're not entitled to closure from any band, ever, but it still hurts to know I will never have it. I rarely ever admit to any of that because it's so frowned upon by cancel culture to still need something out of the work of an artist who's done something terrible, and it's made me question whether I was a horrible person or not for it. The whole comment section is really reassuring. This is a great video, by the way. :)

Sorry to say but being a die hard fan for over 14-15 year's won't change how I feel about EVERYONE else in the BAND. Everyone thinks a singer is the BAND. Being a bass player in many band's I can say while they might get the most attention their wouldnt be a band without everyone else. I think that after the allegations a lot of his work came into focus with the new perspective. No one is completely good or completely bad. People are complex, and this was a young man who was clearly broken, thrust into a position of fame and power. What he did was wrong, I don't defend his actions, but sadly it's par for the course when rock stars do this. Throughout the lifespan of rock music, you saw young women (saw a documentary about two 14 year old girls doing this) with members of guns and roses, ac/DC, Clapton, Hendrix, Jimmy page, and society as a whole still holds these people up for the work they've done. In his apology Jesse stated that he'd been receiving help for years for his problems. That he had already been working on fixing himself for a while before the allegations come out. He didn't deny doing it either, unlike so many people accused of similar things at the time. I hope he is doing well and that he continues to learn and grow as a person. I hope the people he hurt are able to get what they need to heal and live happy fulfilling lives. We as fans aren't entitled to closure, you're right. But I will still be thankful for the entire band and how their work enriched my life. Deja Entendu helped me get through bouts of depression, the devil and God helped me with my own crisis of faith and crisis of identity, and science fiction gave me a place of comfort when dealing with my divorce. My cousin handed me the Deja Entendu album in November 2003, I have been a fan since then, and will continue to be

Me personally, after watching your video, I began understand some of his lyrics on deeper level, I sew some gilt and expression of trying to understand his dark side of his. I still listen to Brand New all the time, recently started listening to them everyday again, like I used to when I was a young person. Jesse’s writing and the band’s music is incredible, full of complex emotions and masterful musicality. I’ve never understood people who can’t separate the art from the artist. Lots of masterpieces in our history have been made by complex, damaged and disturbed, and most importantly, flawed human beings. The Internet, deciding that somebody is a bad person doesn’t mean shit to me . Their music wouldn’t have been what it was without Jesse being the exact person he is. I’d wager everything I have that lots of the people who dismissed them after this “news” broke out, have done, extremely shitty and despicable things in their lives too. I’m not condoning Jesse’s behavior, but complicated people do fucked things, it’s human nature. I mean, if you listen to the music and read his lyrics, you know that there are some dark things going on inside this man you can’t see that and you’re not really comprehending the words
@consumerextraordinaire8209
@consumerextraordinaire8209 7 ай бұрын
Maybe analyze why you can't understand those people. Separating art from artist isn't just some binary dichotomy. There's an unquantifiable spectrum here that you're just trying to ignore in favor of the convenience of polarity. "The internet", as you put it, isn't some monolith that makes decisions. And to wager everything you have that anybody who thinks this guy is a predator and deserves to be judged accordingly is just as bad is proof of how much of a foolish take you're clinging to. Extreme bets that can never be cashed in on drawn on conclusions built off of assumptions from elementary rational fallacies. Complicated people do fucked up things but so do simple people. Being "complicated" doesn't necessitate being a shitbag. I'm glad you can still enjoy the music but to decry those who can't, or whose enjoyment is diminished as being unable to form comprehensive perspectives on the matter is just narrow minded and arrogant.

I discovered Brand New in early 2015, and fell in love with them in early 2017. Brand New became my favorite band of all-time, surpassing Avenged Sevenfold which had been my favorite since I was a young kid. They’ve been there for me through some really horrible times. They were there when I had no friends, when I met some nice people that I wanted to be my friends, through unrequited love. I’d already been having a really horrible day when I saw the news about Jesse break, and it solidified it as one of the worst days of my life. But, I also found myself not feeling very shocked. Even years before it, with The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot and Me vs Maradona vs Elvis (my two favorite songs) his behavior seemed evident. Jesse struck me as a beautiful lyricist who is also a broken man, knowing he’s done really fucked up things. A deeply narcissistic man who cares too much about his own gratification to change himself and yet, I find myself more and more drawn to him with every listen. Maybe in some ways I feel similar to him, though I’ve never done anything like what he did. His apology struck me as a sincere attempt at redemption and if Andrea Lacey’s occasional posts about him are any indication, he seems to have found it. I still listen to their music almost everyday and certainly every week, and probably always will. It’s a shame I was screwed out of seeing them live a few years ago, and now I never can. I only hope someday I can thank him for the incredible music and wish him well.

I think you could have gone more in depth about what made them stand out, such as the dark nature of TDAGARIM, the fact that Jesse is a notorious recluse and how even the lyrics have never been confirmed, and their hiatus in the early 2000s. Also you didn't even mention the fact that they released their final album 3 months before Jesse was outed for the allegations, or really anything about Science Fiction.

Once I'm given an impression of the personality or behavior of an artist, I don't think I ever fully separate the art from the artist, regardless of whether or not they've done anything that is morally reprehensible. Any time I listen to it, how I think about it and process it is affected by that impression. The way I feel when I listen to Brand New now is markedly different than it was in 2010. While that change occurred gradually for the most part, the most drastic shift in my view of their music was after I learned about the allegations against Jesse Lacey (around the time Science Fiction came out). That said, I still listen to Brand New a lot. Every few days. Even though I always have that awareness at the back of my mind, the music still gives me some catharsis and comfort when I listen to it.

Honestly I will say I listen to them a little less now, but to say I never throw on Deja/YFW/Devil and God these days would be false. Those were like defining albums for me in middle and high school. Also I'm curious why you didn't wanna get into the Taking Back Sunday drama. People were talking about that a ton during the Daisy - Science Fiction days. Anyway another great video my dude.

Allen Yee they had already planned the end. Jesse has been going through therapy and dealing with his guilt for the kind of person he was years ago. The allegation came out after they announced the end and after they dropped the new album. People have corroborated that she lied about being a minor and the allegation was unfit under (at least as far as sleeping with a minor). I feel like that was a grasp for attention or some sort of retribution for the way he acted with her. He has admitted to being a creep and a sex addict with lots of issues when it came to the like.

That being said... brand new is still on my rotation, 9/10 times I skip but sometimes man... I gotta cry

For me, it's less of separating the artist from the music, but separating the music from the memories. Music is so nostalgic and it has the power to take me back to a different time. I remember growing with Brand New, and listening to songs with my friends and getting excited when we found their vinyl. It felt like our own little club of people and it was great. I remember hearing the news and being so confused by the outcome. Now, when I see a Brand New vinyl at the shop, I feel the immediate excitement followed by the realization that things aren't how they use to be. I'm always unsure how to feel about it all. Do I punish the other band members for one's actions? Am I supporting them, or the local record store if I choose to buy their vinyl? Dare I sing along in the car when Mixtape comes on? Maybe y'all have some answers because I literally don't know.

Brand New is my favorite band of all time. No music has ever touched me the way theirs has, and I don’t think any ever will. That being said, I did a lot of research when the allegations came out, and I can’t find anything conclusive that proves whether or not he was talking to the victim when she was a minor. I know it’s incredibly likely that Jesse did _something_ shitty to her, and that makes me sick to my stomach, but I just want to know the whole truth. His “apology” was subpar at best to me, and he didn’t even mention the fact that she was allegedly a minor at the time. I think he should have addressed it, and I’m ultimately going to stand with the victim because we should always give survivors the benefit of the doubt. It’s difficult, because Brand New quite literally kept me from killing myself, to stop listening to them entirely. I try to remember as much as possible when I do listen that the band was also Garrett, Brian, and Vinny. It’s hard not to feel betrayed by Jesse, though. It’s at least somewhat...comforting? to know that he _knew_ he was doing something wrong. He was always wrestling with it. “It’s hard to be the better man...when you’re still lying.” Ultimately, I’ll always love Brand New and I’ll always come back to their music. But will I support them financially if they do by some chance do a reunion tour? No. Will I support Brian, Vinny, and Garrett if they choose to start new projects? Yes. Will I ever support Jesse again? I don’t think I could. The reason I still come back to Brand New’s music is because I can’t separate it from what it did for me emotionally. But I don’t think I could have those same feelings about anything Jesse makes going forward because he’s not the same anymore. It’s tainted now, ruined. It’s hard not to be really really down about everything. I still think about it all most days. I know that we don’t deserve anything as fans, but it’s hard not to want closure that will never come. I hope that everyone affected by it is doing better now, and that they will find peace.

I was 16 when Brand New came out with their first CD, and I bought it right away. Since I was young, I identified with the angst-y Pop Punk sound and lyrics. I had the privilege of maturing with the band. I was always a die hard fan, and introduced Brand New to lots of people. I can completely separate their work from any actions they may have done. There are famous rappers that have done MUCH worse things and no one cares, so it's unfortunate that there's a double-standard.

We celebrate the tortured musings of a broken artist until the man behind those words turns out he's just as broken as his music is. Nothing a human being can do will ever be more powerful than the art they create. Fuck the thumbnail of this video. Brand New's music will forever be cancel proof. I've listened to them for over a decade, own all their vinyl, and I didn't even know Jesse's name until watching this video. The point is that it doesn't matter. Rumors online say the band still talk and still are writing stuff I'm a huge fan and I dig deep for answers. I grew up with brand new literally. It hurt me to see what happened but time heals there worse people out there one thing you missed since I have seen the band many times Jessie has the worst anxiety every and would drink and smoke pot before every show. they were so horrible live but in later years they sounded really good probably. 1. Can I separate the art from the artist? Yes, I actually don't find this too difficult, because for me art is a very personal experience. I definitely understand that there are certain boundaries that constrain us when it comes to interpreting art (i.e. there are instances where an interpretation is definitively right or wrong), but within those constraints I try to maximally exercise my freedom in applying the meaning to my own life. For example, in Can't Get It Out Jesse is singing about depression from the perspective of an almost-40 year-old person whose spent the last 15 years preaching to a bunch of angsty teenagers, and how that has influenced his mental health and outlook on life. As a 20-something myself, I can't necessarily relate to that, and furthermore I don't see the song as needing to abide by a strict mapping where each lyric is about JESSE. Because the song is also about depression generally, something I very much relate to, and so I can read into the lyrics from this lens. My favorite line is at the end when he says "I've got a positive message / Sometimes I can't get it out," which to him refers to how he intends to sing about depression, death, spirituality, etc. in a way that helps people, but sometimes it comes off as him feeling sorry for himself or being a downer. To me though, this line represents how I have a lot of love for the people around me and I love to make people happy / laugh, but my depression (among other things) often holds me back from doing this and causes me to hurt people I'm close to. It's within the constraints of the song's meaning without being exactly what Jesse had in mind when he wrote the lyric, and so to me the lyric isn't about Jesse - it's about me. This sounds selfish / egotistical, but I think it's very fair for everyone to interpret art through their own schema. All this to say: I find myself uniquely equipped to remove unnecessary connection to an artist, and to understand their meaning without considering it the endpoint - rather, it's the starting point for applying the song to my own life, thus reclaiming meaningful art from people like Jesse who are horrible, abusive people that I don't necessarily look up to or respect. 2. Do I still listen to Brand New? Yes, obviously, and while the above implicitly addresses it I do find that, in general, I don't restrict myself from intaking art based on who made it. In addition to what I've said, I feel like it would be exhausting to the point of futility to try to limit consuming any bad person's art. Why is there outrage around Jesse, while David Bowie, Elvis, and Jimmy Page (among many other classic rock musicians) remain beloved? Rob Lowe has a sex tape with a 16 year-old, and it didn't stop him from winning the starring role in one of television's most influential shows ever. Kobe Bryant died a legend despite an extremely publicized rape allegation. Even outside the realm of sexual misconduct, countless artists engage in interpersonal violence, drunk driving, and horrific philosophical / social ideologies that would make me immediately cut them off if they were personal friends. But that's not what they are - they're conduits for me to understand myself, and to give me enjoyment. I do understand the importance of making bad acts publicly unacceptable, I fully support the #MeToo movement and the cancellation of abusers, and I don't think there can be a universally applied "never reject art because of the artist" principle that I'd abide by. I think I'd also take a lot more issue with consuming Brand New's music if they hadn't disbanded, and were continuing to live normally. It's clear, though, that Jesse's life is functionally over and that his reputation is tarnished forever - as it should be. I'm comfortable giving him 0.00037 cents or whatever astronomically low wage he earns per Spotify stream ever time I want to bump TDAG. I think there's probably a set of axes, where the level of personal closeness and the relative badness of the atrocity committed influence whether I can still enjoy an artist. Jesse hasn't crossed it, and due to the personal distance I keep myself from celebrities I find that very few artists have.

To answer your questions: 1. Yes, you have to. Most of the best art comes from the fringes, the highest highs and the lowest lows. If that art helps you understand something about yourself or the world around you, then it is beautiful, no matter how tortured or broken the source was. 2. Absolutely, their music has become a part of me. It still takes me back to high school, even decades later. I will always #AppreciateBrandNew. Always. Good video, thanks mate!

The age of consent for New York is 17 years old. That was the age of the girl when Jesse met her at a show, they did online video chats and this is where all the allegations come from. He was probably 24 at the time. Jesse told the girl they could never have a physical relationship till she was older and she never dove much into those details. Those are the facts of what happened. I’m not saying this isn’t incredibly shameful behavior but it’s not as black and white as people would like to paint it as either. These are the details I’d actually like to see discussed this is the real conversation.

I’m 29 and I started hearing about this kind of shit he was doing when I was 17-18 years old and really fell off of them. I got back into them when I was 27ish and dove back in, but at least in the NY scene people were aware that he was pulling shit like this for a very long time. Probably from the start.
