Today, I discuss the American rock band, Brand New. I cover their early career, all of their studio albums and finally, the 2017 allegations against Jesse Lacey that would lead to their demise. This is the story of Brand New, an incredibly successful band formed in 2000, whose legacy is now overshadowed by controversy.

The most interesting thing about Brand New is how each album progressively gets darker and more experimental and abstract.

And louder. I feel like a lot of bands start off heavy, then gradually lighten their music up to explore what they can do with a more subtle sound. Brand New's sound just got more and more in-your-face.

Science fiction is literally phenomenal

No idea how you could say that Sci-Fi is "utterly void of any semblance of brightness"? Science Fiction is absolutely full of hope and is the most positive of any Brand New record. I mean - Could Never Be Heaven is literally just a love song of devotion to his wife and family. They talk about "people they love" and the little love-song outro song after Out of Mana. He snuck in a little "I miss you" presumably to his wife. Lit Me Up, sure is dark, but with this gem: "I want to put my hands to work till the work's done/I want to open up my heart like the ocean" there is hope in the bleakness. There is drive, motivation. Follow that up with the self-deprecating can't get it out with the actual line "I got a positive message, sometimes I can't get it out" He's literally telling us to look for the hopeful moments in his songs. Waste can seem like a bummer but its a "get off your ass, pull yourself out of the crap, addiction and depression aren't the glory days, there is more, and you can emerge from this" Finishing it off with "you are not alone, you are not alone". This is a bright song. This song is hopeful. Okay Same Logic is more Devil and God/Daisy in terms of content. But 137/Desert. They aren't dark like older brand new. But more politically charged. No Control has the bright moment "Be for someone else/Love is in your actions" And the line "I hear your voice coming through the gray" I have no clue about 451 but it sure is a banger. And Batter Up is dark but it has hope. Thats the whole point of the song. "And even though the roar died in your throat/The lines get blurred/Lose whoever you once were/Died and returned to the earth/Found ourselves back/In love" I think Science Fiction is what a hopeful brand new album sounds like. Its their farewell, but not all hope is lost. Its fantastic.

You're so right about this. I feel like Brand New went out by giving us all some hope. Letting us know that it isn't all darkness and misery all the time. I have to be careful when listening to Deja, Devil and God, and Daisy because those albums can take me to some pretty dark places, but Science Fiction makes me feel better. Like an old friend who was going through a shit time with you, but they pulled themselves out of it and now you're both doing better and you can look back at everything and feel stronger for it.

I know a lot of people who were put off of Brand New after the allegations and his apology, but they've all come back to the music despite their dislike of Jesse. It's very hard to stay away from. Especially if it was a big part of your teenage years. And honestly, a ton of iconic bands from the 60s and 70s (Led Zeppelin and the Stones are the biggest example) are surrounded in similar controversies and they still get radio play. No one ever brings up that David Bowie slept with underage girls. I've had people shame me for continuing to listen to Brand New, while they keep showing their support to David Bowie or other artists who have done very similar things. Which is fine, Bowie is one of the greatest artists ever. It's just the hypocrisy of it that bothers me.

I became their fan after I heard their album TDAGRIM which seemed o be about guilt and depression and the albums that came later also seemed to about a downward spiral and coping with bad choices and "a no way out' feeling from circumstances.....It was always interesting to me, listening to TDAGRIM that this guy must have done something bad and now his conscience is giving him pain....later I learned that he did some shit to underage girls....I became a fan after TDAGRIM and see it as something so interesting as a mind that's guilt ridden and heavy as hell, when I got to know about the allegations, and heard the song 'Bed' later I knew he did something bad, and even though he did something bad it makes their music even more interesting because this is a guy who did something bad and later his brain melts because of guilt.....people are interested in Hitler by the way

Just think about how crazy this all is- he issued an apology and has clearly worked on improvement, so what more could anyone do? What happened to rehabilitation? To me, if the allegations were accurate, then I feel that if Jesse sticks by his family and doesn't mess around in the way he did or repeat that type of negative action, then he has the right to enjoy his life and be proud of the positives, like the music he made and his Children. His Wife seems nice etc. I believe in redemption and second chances. Someday you who would quickly condemn Jesse might wish for the same second chance, we're all flawed beings. Good luck people

I agree, Jesse doesn't deserve a life of unhappiness *if* he has changed, but I also understand that his actions have a widespread effect, and at least for me they do tarnish the band. I can't really listen to emotional lyrics written by a man who was, for of those songs, actively engaging in these actions at the same time. They're tied together. And it must be much worse for his victim(s). Redemption is something one can earn through hard work though, and I understand how important this band is to many (myself included, Brand New was my favorite band for well over a decade). I think no matter how you look at it and how hard you try to have the "right" opinion on the band and what happened, it's always going to be too nuanced for everyone to come to the same conclusion. The one thing I think we can all agree on is damn, this ending was a sad one that we wish didn't happen.

Brand New is still one of my favorite bands. Jesse's behavior was known for a while amongst fans and although that kind of misconduct is never excusable, I am glad he faced his condemnation. He needed to. I agree that good music shouldn't be written off for the actions of one when the entire band was behind the genius. If they came back with another album I would buy it, as I did the others, and I would see them, like so many times before. My best show recollection was my 21st bday in my hometown of Houston and meeting them. For a superfan, it felt as though the stars had aligned.

Still my favorite band . With out defending Lacey's actions I will say in the early 2000s he was 21 and in a band thats fan base was mostly 16-20. While still wrong I think there is a huge silent majority of fans that can be forgiving of him especially 20 some years after the act. If they ever realeased music or toured I don't think they would have any issues selling tickets.

Move the f along people and let him and his wife live their lives. I don't want to sit here and condone anything he did, but Jesse gets a much worse wrap than he should. It wasn't sexual assault, it was sexual misconduct, over the internet with 2 girls that were underage and neither had admitted they were underage prior. There was no physical contact with these underage girls and it sure doesn't seem like Jesse at the time had any idea they were not of age. Does it makes it ok, no, but it's at one of the lowest rungs possible as far as sexual misconduct goes. It's sad Jesse seemingly will forever be painted in this light but when you back up and acknowledge the situation based on the facts we do have, it really seems like childish mistakes on both parts, and not a situation where Jesse had malicious intent or a a Chris D'Elia type of kink for not legal girls. Hopefully some public forgiveness with arise so at the very least a comeback tour would be possible

Good points. Usually if something smells fishy it should be researched more to see where that smell is coming from. "Rock stars" will always have groupies, and changing your mind after the fact does not = abuse or misconduct.

I would be inclined to agree with you regarding separating the art from the Artist - but there are some problematic people. I am not sure if I can enjoy Klaus Kinski films anymore. Also, what are your thoughts on the extremely troubling case of Ian Watkins, former frontman of the Irish band Lost Prophets?
@TheMusicNarrative
@TheMusicNarrative 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the very late reply, just now saw this comment and feel it deserves a response. Ian Watkins is truly the definition of a monster. There’s really no dancing around that. What he did was absolutely disgusting and 100% unforgivable. Also, considering his general smugness and lack of remorse, that only makes his situation so much worse. Ian is in his own category of smut. Not to downplay the Jesse Lacey situation, but the two are simply not comparable. Ian’s offenses against humanity are so far beyond Lacey and almost every musician to ever be accused of anything, ever. The Watkins case is enough to shake somebody to their core and make them physically ill. The dude deserves to rot in prison for the rest of his life. Absolutely deplorable and despicable excuse for a human being. As for Lost Prophets, meh. Definitely was never anything special. Rather derivative at best. Thank you for the question!

@@TheMusicNarrative I wholeheartedly agree on all points! Thank you for taking time to respond so thoughtfully and thoroughly to my comment! The notion of separating the art from the artist is something I've struggled with for a while with a few topics. Going back to Klaus kinski, at one point in time in my life I would say he was one of my favorite actors- at least when it came to the 5 films he did with Warner Herzog. As of now, I'm not sure if I'll be able to revisit any of those after the claims of abuse his daughter suffered at his hands. It's quite the conundrum. Thanks again for your thoughts and your insight! Cheers!

I'm riding the same boat you're in as well.. after years and years of hard work and total commitment to my band and the other guys in the band when we broke up (which had nothing in the world to do with me) I still haven't to this day picked up a Bass guitar. (about 6 yrs now) it actually took me about 2 yrs after our break up that I wanted anything to do with music again.. it affected me that much. But in the end my love for music is back and now I just play a Acoustic Guitar about every day and still write as often as I'm inspired too. Anyway lol sorry for the long comment.. haha.. I read your comment and I could totally relate. It's awesome you're still playing and writing!! Best of luck man!! ✌️🤘

Deja was defining as so far as it was their first commercial success, but TDAG encompassed the most themes and sounds thruout their entire career. But honestly, I think it’s better to view each album as a reflection of the time that they were written considering how auto-biographical each release was. YFW-Teens Deja-Early 20’s TDAG-Late 20’s Daisy-Early/Mid 30’s Science Fiction-Late 30’s Haha. I remember them finally coming out and saying that the reason they didn’t send the lyrics sheet is because the postage alone would have bankrupted them and cost more than the album sales themselves. I think they did end up sending some stuff out if you ordered merch though.

I argue that they are as good as they are because how they did it! They made art, not sold music nobody wanted!! The difference for Jason is that we have all BEEN hearing the music! One of the people said "listen to his music, HE MEANS IT" WE KNOW!! lol I am a survivor! What he went through is literally what men face everyday! This behavior is not new! I respect him because he manned up! I cannot explain how beneficial that is to victims!! Does that make it better? No! Because the girls will carry that for life! But a predator did his part to help them heal! And I respect THAT! they made art! Something that is not common in music now! I can use a song from them to express literally EVERYTHING ABOUT MY FEELINGS AND MY MENTAL HEALTH

I’ve been a diehard fan since day 1. ‘Your favourite weapon’ came out in my 2nd year of high-school, and I was immediately hooked. I love every piece of music they’ve released. I still listen to songs from every album almost daily when they come on my shuffled playlist of music. But I gotta disagree with the point made about ‘science fiction’ being their best work. While it was a very good album yes; it seemed mildly lacking. like a derivative of the 2 prior albums. The songs just didn’t have the ‘oomf’ that the previous albums had. For me, ‘devil and god’ will always be their pinnacle. That album is beyond solid from front to back. Every song on it still gives me goosebumps to this day.
